Do you know that flutes come in different tube thicknesses? Most flutes will come with the standard thickness of 0.16”. But when choosing a flute, it’s helpful to understand how tubing thickness can change the way you sound.
How does it enhance your tone? Does a thickness make the flute easier or more difficult to play?
These answers can be found in my video sponsored by the Flute Center of New York.
I compare the 3 different tube thicknesses and discuss the benefits of each so that you can decide which is best for you.
Have fun!

I remember flipping through flute catalogues and always thinking I’d love heavy wall tubings for any future flute I’d get. Turns out I actually don’t like heavy wall at all. Recently got a old Haynes at .011” thickness and I feel in love with the resonance that the .012” and .014” couldn’t achieve. Reading and hear about Rampal’s .009” tubing makes me wonder if it’ll be possible to find a flute that thin. His sound was just remarkably bright.

Everything sounds beautiful when played by a professional!!! This video has been very helpful, think my next for would be a .016 thickness.. think that's the best, I normally have trouble with my high notes.. Does a gold plated lip plate make a difference as well? Or does it just make it look nice? Keep up the videos please, I have found you are most informative online flute teacher..

Thankyou so much for you compliment. I will definitely keep up. Feel free to suggest things you are interested in as well. The gold lip plate makes a big difference in sound. Any time you change the metal on the flute or just head joint will affect the tone. I use a gold riser on my head joint which gives me a little more brilliance then when I play my straight silver head. I wonder if you have an issue with air direction and speed with your high notes?

Hi Angela, very interesting video! I have an older Muramatsu Silver Headjoint, no idea about thickness. After an almost 30y break, it was restored, an my actual teacher is about changing my embouchure (and so my sound) drastically. My flute has a very good sound. Despite that i'm about looking fot a wooden headjoint, since i'm much into baroque/early classic. In order to copy the wooden sound of traversos, I prefer a darker sound on Boehm flutes. I hopefully will have the chance to try a Mura DS heavy. If I can try it, I'm very curious about the differences. But maybe I'd rather have to face touching a traverso...
@DoctorFlute
@DoctorFlute 2 жыл бұрын
I wonder if your old Muramatsu is heavy walled. I think it was much more common years ago to make heavy walled. I know a few people who play on a wooden head joint and they sound great so I bet that will be a great choice for you. The Muramatsu DS heavy will be a fantastic instrument. Good luck with your journey.

I love this topic! To be honest, I find that I sometimes feel like I overblow the 0.016" but because I have struggled with a performance injury, I think that any flute that I get after my Powell Signature would need to be a denser alloy rather than a heavier flute. If I stayed with Powell, I would probably get a heavy wall. I really loved the Burkart 998 with the gold soldered tone holes because it was denser than sterling silver, but not heavy. My playing is more leaning toward the "American" sound: more edgy and rough.
@DoctorFlute
@DoctorFlute 2 жыл бұрын
I agree that the alloys can give you that edgier sound that is popular today. My favorite flute right now is a Burkhart with a platinum riser. For me it is the best of both worlds. It has the edge and also can be sweet but also powerful. It is fun to dream!

The subject is of ongoing relevance.Ideally, one can derive the maximum out of each flute by "sizing" its characteristics up by playing and approach each instrument in the best possible way.There do exist light instruments with all the capabilities of heavier instruments and heavy instruments that respond as easily as lighter instruments. Good luck finding one-not that easy, and they were likely made in France or in Boston.

How would it work to pair a heavy wall head joint with a thin wall flute?
@DoctorFlute
@DoctorFlute 2 жыл бұрын
I think the biggest problem you would have is that they thin walled head joint would not fit the heavy walled body. If you went the other way around the thin wall head joint could stretch to fit the heavy walled body but a heavy walled head joint has a tiny bit bigger bore size. It would be interesting to find one that would fit and hear the sound. Good question.
@acidforblood
@acidforblood 2 жыл бұрын
Does the darker sounding heavy wall mean that you get less tone color range though due to the resistance? Or does it actually open up more possibilities if you are comfortable with using more air? I'm wondering if James Galway preferred heavier walled flutes. I realise he has been a fan of Muramatsu flutes in the past which I think have more resistance. I could be wrong if so please correct me. I believe he uses A LOT of air when he plays as his tone sounds so rich in a lot of his music even in the higher registers as well as the lower notes which to make a really loud purple tone in the lowest notes without cracking/overblowing can be difficult, probably cus I'm still a beginner. I wish I won the lottery so that I could rent or buy many different flutes and experience these nuances for myself. I guess all in good time.
@DoctorFlute
@DoctorFlute 2 жыл бұрын
I think that the heavy wall does give you more color choices. It also just gives you a darker richer tone. Perhaps not with all heavy walled instruments but certainly with a Muramatsu. I really don't know what type Galway played I only know that he now plays a Nagahara. I am slightly afraid of a heavy wall myself because I don't use a lot of air and I am afraid that it would need more then I have but I do like the sound the heavy wall makes. It is so luscious. About the lottery, you and me both!
