Testing two different fuels to see if there is any power difference between the two in my 2014 Dodge Charger R/T!
The results are pretty surprising to me, is this what you expected?
Help a brother out and please like and share this video as it took me forever to do!

I've been driving the same truck for the last 14 years and I always use 87 Oct . yesterday I used 93 octain. And yes there is a difference I can tell a huge. Increase in power I know this truck like the back of my hand.

That in my humble opinion was a very well done test, especially for not being in a controlled environment etc etc. And thank you for not throwing a whole lot of personal bias into the mix, that was refreshing as well. I for one would really like to see a test with the 5.7 between 87 octane, and the 93 octane. Overall gas mileage for a tank, and your tests from 40 to 80 and maybe a few more 0 to 60 and I would love to see the 40 to 80 in third gear, I think it would put the engine more in it's comfort zone, where it's designed to operate with a little performance. I mean let's face it Mopar turned a truck hemi into a really nice small block with a lot of horses for its size in 2011. Not to mention how much performance you can actually get out of one of these if you want. Anyway thank you, great video and now a subscriber.

This has been a great video since I go back and forth between 89 and 93. Now the factory tune requires 89, so I'm sure they have some sort of rhyme /reason for that. Anyways - For what it's worth, it's a breath of fresh air to finally read comments without interjections from Internet trolls. That in itself was worth reading all the responses. Nice!

+Frank & Stephanie Burrell Octane tunes are directly proportional to engine compression ratio. Octane is literally a measure of how much compression a fuel can take before self-combusting (i.e., before top dead center and spark).

Octane # is not about power or energy in fuel, its more about when it will detonate. Thats why engines with higher compression ratio need higher octane fuel. afair - alcohol based fuels have octane numbers more than 100, lol, but you will get worse mpg ( less energy per gallon, basically ) with it.

Thank you for writing all of this so i dont have too lol. I hate when people think octane is associated with power.
@joer5057
@joer5057 4 жыл бұрын
Octane is associated with power, when you consider that the ecu will pull timing (take power away) if it detects any knock. It's been noted before, and even insinuated by Chrysler/Dodge, that you will lose performance using 87 vs 89. Octane, in and of itself will not make power. But, when the ecm can add timing due to the higher octanes knock resistance, THAT will result in more power (however slight or significant that circumstantially may be)
@Sak-zo1ui
@Sak-zo1ui 4 жыл бұрын
Joe R power doesnt have everything to do with it. It is timing and compression. Hellcats are running 87 while the 6.4 is running 93. The 6.4 has a much higher compression because it is n/a. Now yes at one point the compression will be so high that you need an even higher octane. And power will follow but octane is not directly connected to power.
@andrewhigdon8346
@andrewhigdon8346 4 жыл бұрын
Sak 20012019 but it is associated with horsepower. In fact horsepower is dependent on octane. On an older car without a knock sensor, higher octane will not give you more power right off the bat and with no other changes. But with modern spark control, higher octane will net you more power if the car was designed for it. So in essence, higher octave doesn’t give horsepower, it allows it.

That was a good video. The high octane rating used to be mandatory for a high compression engine to keep from detonating. It is no longer the case. The Ford 5.0 has an engine management system that is off the charts. It has an 11 to 1 compression ratio, but can still run on 87 octane. It does drop in HP, but the .60 cents a gallon you save is worth it.

Great video, great car! I have been driving around the 2015 charger v6 since last May and I absolutely love it. I can't wait until I graduate university and et the 2015 R/T. I have couple comments on the video regarding the testing, some stuff that you could have done in a better way. For instance when you filled it with 93, you filled it all the way to the max you mentioned, but you only put 16 gallons the first run. That could account for some extra weight. Second, I think it would be a better test if you were on a straight way rather going up or downhill. These are not major stuff, but these could make a small difference when testing! Overall great video, can't say I'm surprised with the results though! Keep em comin (Y)

+Wael Salem Both sets of test were done with full tanks of their appropriate gas. 89 octane filled up with 16.92 gallons while the 93 octane filled up with 16.67 gallons. The test locations aren't perfectly flat but I did 4 runs in the same spots for each fuel to keep it consistent. Thanks for the comment though and enjoy your charger!

I will just stick with 89 the recommended fuel. The 5.7 engine factory tuning does not have much flexibility for other grades of fuel. The knock sensors are heavily used running 87 when the engine is under load, with less power being the result, but most drivers will not notice that. For 93 octane with an aftermarket tune you can make more power, but with a factory tune the difference is not noticeable.

I had a mazda before my challenger, noticed even though mazda claimed 87 was best that 89 gave me 10mpg better gas mileage, and that's not even a joke. It shocked even the mazda dealership. I tested the same thing in my v6 challenger, and get at least 5mpg better on 89 plus my engine sounds like its running smoother, i was getting a lot of what sounded like knocking on 87 like the owners manual said so again they should change it to ask for 89 due to just offering better gas mileage and a smoother running car. I would also like to add that in the future i do hope to add a RIPP Supercharger to my challenger before it gets too high in miles. Should make it a lot more fun to drive.

This is great, thanks! I have the same vehicle, wondered the same thing. My car is in for a partial rebuild under warranty, all he said was something about the cam, I thought the cylinder head was being rebuilt, either way it started to misfire on the second cylinder and when they went in, it's an $1800 job but it is covered under the powertrain warranty. I never get gas from anywhere but Chevron, Costco or Tom Thumb, interestingly, I started having problems with my old Charger after I moved here and started using Tom Thumb gas. The Costco gas 87 is OK, but I wish they had 91, my car never runs that great after a Costco fill up. My sensitive flower of a Hemi is happiest with Shell, even 87. Oh, I'm in Dallas and I was told to fill up at the station near the Winstar casino in OK, everyone goes on empty so they can fill up there something about the gas not having additives. It's expensive but wow does my car love this gas! Great mileage, smooth as silk, lots of power. Weird, huh! Thoughts?

Very clear presentation. The video and sound were very good. Keep up the good work. Your 40 - 80 test in a tall gear did not make any sense. Is that the way you normally drive? Your engine would take advantage of the 93 octane if you let it wind up in in the optimal power range. If you were afraid of damaging your vehicle with some full throttle, high rpm accelerations, sell that dodge and get a Ford Mustang like the one you referenced in the beginning of your video. That Mustang owner was not afraid to wind up his ecoboost a few times. Good luck and hope to see you again.

hey bud, you should run a full tank of the 93 first then do the testing on the 2nd tank of 93. it takes a little bit for the computer to change all of the fuel trims that were stored from adaptive learning with the 87 or 89 you were previously running.

As of now I run 89 on my 5.7L Charger, my MPG is at 15.5. However I do have a Costco card but they don't sell 89 octane, I am considering running 91 octane for the better prices at Costco. Should I use 91?

For me going to 91/93 made no difference on the seat dyno, what I liked was the fuel economy increase and how much smoother it ran. The plugs are cleaner and the MDS is much smoother.

I feel like with in time after constant use of 93, you would get better gas mileage, better spark and a bit quicker, same as synthetic oil use, healthier for the car, longer lasting, overall better quality.

When you are changing the pump gas for the one with higher octane rating you also need to adjust ignition timing accordingly and this us where you would gain extra power. On 5.7 L engine it would be about 30-40 flywheel HP all else being equal except ignition timing. Just changing the type of fuel ain't gonna make much difference...

I think honestly it depends on your mods (if any) and how/where you drive. If I'm driving somewhere over 200 miles I'm putting 87 in my 2016 Charger R/T. even if gas mileage is better with 89/93 I'm paying way less per mile using 87 so I still win. Then again dodge recommends 89, 89 being best for performance and gas mileage as well as making the 5.7 last longer while giving out the best for longer. If I'm cruising around where I live just doing what I do I keep 89 in it, maybe if I was going to the track I'd put in 93 (I'm bone stock) but I still don't see it being much of a difference. My biggest concern overall engine life and dodge says 89 is the best.

If you have a custom tune, the octane does make a difference. On my 2004 Mustang GT, with 89 octane & tune, I produce 305 wheel horsepower. If I run the 93 octane & tune, I produce 315 wheel horsepower. So a tune can make all the difference

You started out with 89 so the pcm has learned the fuel trims for that octane. When you put 93 in it, you won't see any performance difference unless you reset the pcm fuel trims. This will also reset the changes made to the base timing due to the 89 octane. Basically the test in the video was a show of his 89 octane tune learned in the pcm.

As I'm sure it has been said in the comments somewhere, you are going to need a 93 octane tune to take advantage of the extra power that fuel would provide. If you had a 93 octane tune and did the same tests with a lower octane you would certainly see a power drop. If your car doesn't have an after market 93 octane tune and runs off of 87-89 octane you get the results that you came to during this test; although gas mileage may slightly increase. Good video by the way.

The difference between 87/93 is very minimal on a factory tune. The knock sensors are calibrated in such a way from OEM that it's almost not worth it:depending on the type of car, of course. I am on my 2nd Charger (1st was an 08 Daytona, 2nd is '13 Daytona) and I have run both. The 93 is necessary after a tune. Does it run just fine without a tune? Of course. But as the numbers show, not always worth that extra few bucks per fill. I have noticed a bigger difference on where I get my gas. If I am in a pinch and I go to a mom & pop corner store, my mileage suffers. If I run Shell, the car just seems to run a lot better. I know it does in my wife's EcoBoost Flex.

I don't know a ton about tuning these modern engines, but requir it in order for it to recognize the higher octane and would need to get into the computer to do that. Does anyone know if that is correct, or not ? Its not a high-performance mill and only requires 89, so it wouldn't do anyting to begin with and should just save your money for mods that will do it some good

I personally don't get why you started in 4th gear, you aren't going to notice anything like that. You were better off letting the car stay in drive and auto select the gear it needed when you floored it. I've tried C12 in the tank and only noticed it was a bit more responsive and pulled a little harder but as for feeling a horsepower difference a dyno is the only way to see. Plus for the money, that's not even worth the test.

Good video man. I think 89 will net you the best results just due to owners manual per say. But of course if you got a tune for the 93 it will net more power (added timing and blah blah). A good test too, i know you said you did the on off thing, but taking the battery off and reconnecting it might do a more of a reset. But I don't know much about chargers so can't say. Also one crazy thing is my friend as a 2008 police charger (r/t) and he happened to race a tundra the other night and lost. It was crazy. The truck looked completely stock. Don't know if this guy 4x4 launch it or what but he was about 3 car lengths in front of him.

Your friend might want to get his 08 pursuit model checked, there's no way that Tundra should have bested him. I operate a 2013 r/t, caught myself in race with a Porsche Cayenne the other day. I normally run 89 octane, Porsche could barely keep up. I hit 120 when he bailed out.
