Does God Ever Lead Us into Temptation?

When we pray “lead us not into temptation”, it may seem like God has the capacity to tempt us. But that’s not the case. God does not tempt us, but he can and sometimes must put us through tests. Here are a four helpful ways to look at this part of the Our Father:
1. Tests reveal things to us. When God tests us, it reveals how much faith, hope, and love we have in God and for God.
2. Tests also strengthen us. As St. Paul says, “We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope” (Romans 5:3-4).
3. When we say, “lead us not into temptation”, what we’re really asking is “God, please don’t test me beyond my ability.” Trials will and must come, but when they do, we should ask God for no more than what we can endure.
4. While God may not tempt us, the evil one does. God tests us by allowing the evil one to do what he does-so we can benefit from the strength and self-revelation that comes from the test.
Hopefully this helps you say this part of the Our Father with more understanding and stronger intent.

Fr Mike Schmitz, I had registered for a Marian retreat at our parish but when that couldn't go as planned I saw this and was present in your online retreat this weekend. It was my birthday and my family, primarily my 7 yr old daughter, had lots of plans. I had no idea how I would get peace, stillness, quiet prayer during their waking hours, but possibly because of the busyness and our all knowing God, I did. THANK YOU so very much! You helped me and taught me a lot in this short time. Thank you for these new tools. Fern E.

Thank you, Fr Mike!! I am looking forward to the virtual weekend retreat - this is wonderful news! I was trying to imagine what this Palm Sunday was going to be like without Holy Mass - and no palms to attach to my sun visor :-) - but this sounds wonderful - again, thank you for putting this together. My Bible translates that line as 'let us not be led to hard testing' - which does not have the implication that God is doing the 'leading' - but rather 'life' can lead us to a hard test - that we may fail at - and we are asking God not to let that happen. I know the Mass version always says the 'lead us not into temptation' - which is kind of confusing; so I say that one at mass and the other during my regular prayer time. :-)

The Lord’s Prayer is that of a total surrendered heart. It recognizes God for who he is, us for who we are, and our total dependence on God. The answer I believe to the question is very simply, don’t give me what I deserve, but deliver me from evil. It is a plea for mercy, when it is not merited.

Hi Ascension team, Thank you for the Lenten Retreat I would like to thank you all for this great blessing of invitation to prayer. Please do convey my big thanks also to father Mike. Though he may be far away and helped in a small way, it played a very very big part in my spiritual direction and growth. To be still in the presence of God is truly beautiful I came up with this prayer. I call in the prayer of my crucible. And may it help you through your hard times and give hope to you like the hope this retreat has given me. Dear Lord... I will drink from the cup you have given me... I will carry this cross... For this is your will that you have cast upon me... For this pain and agony is the instrument of your grace that you have given to me as my inner and spiritual growth... This is my crucible... I take enlightenmet from the suffering that you have given to me... For it is a test of my strength to steel my mind, my heart and my soul. It has indeed made me closer to you than I have ever been. I am glad dear Lord that through this pain I have come back to you as they were the work of your grace. Every struggle and everything that happened to me was to get me here at this moment which is to be with you. I thank you dear God my father. Through Jesus' Name. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy spirit. AMEN!!! With love, Jacob Sigar Sammy

So Jesus was lead by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil at the start of his earthly ministry. And Jesus taught us to pray to the Father that we never endure such an ordeal (lead us not into temptation) towards the end of his earthly ministry. Dunno if it’s right or wrong but it’s simple and lines up nicely for me

Rejoice in temptation! Rejoice in suffering! They are only opportunities to glorify His name! When you are faced with temptation and suffering, through your faith, the Lord will deliver you from them and in turn testify to the truth of His character! That is our purpose everybody! Our only purpose in life is to glorify the Lords name by testifying to the truth of His character in every word we speak and every action we take! When your source of joy comes from glorifying His name(fulfilling your purpose) than you will be joyful all the time! Every moment of every day is an opportunity to glorify His name! Hallelujah! When you said "Please God do not test me beyond my ability" it reminded me of a very popular verse of the holy book Quran (which is also sent from God unlike many Christians and Jews believe). The verse goes like this : "God does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people."

It's a form of English that isn't understood as easily anymore. As an Anglican in England, our traditional liturgy comes from Elizabethan English, itself a reorganised translation from the Sarum Rite. These old phrases can take time to get used to. It just means 'lead us away from' much like other comments have said. Another word we change these days is 'indifferent'. It used to mean 'impartial' but now has connotations of not caring.

I have addressed this interpretation in how it has not been interpreted correctly into the English language. God never leads us unto temptation. It is properly interpreted in Spanish. What other language of the followers of God can anyone share of their own language also is said, "lead us not into tempation". Can anyone share so that we can also find out? Pope Francis had mentioned this same interpretation that he is having discussions about correcting this flaw interpretation into English. God bless him and the Bishops that will study this topic and make the correct decisions that God guides them through the Holy Spirit to make. Edit: Earlier today I was discussing this matter with someone who is a believer and speaks Spanish/English and she said that she never really thought about this or gave it thought but now she says that she is seeing the difference and is aware that the Pope has addressed the topic.

@4-CQL 4 жыл бұрын
I always thought that since it’s God incarnate telling us to ask God the Father not to lead us into temptation, the phrase “lead us not into temptation” couldn’t have meant literally “don’t lead us to be tempted”, because that is God’s will to lead us to be tempted at times. One obvious example would be when God the Holy Spirit leads God the Son to be tempted in the wilderness by Satan. I would think it means “do not lead us to succumb to temptation”, which is something God would not will to happen as He wills the salvation of all souls and for us to resist the temptation to sin. As for why we would be told to ask God not to do something that already isn’t His unchanging will, it must be the same reason that in the Old Testament there are verses like Psalm 10:12 which tell God to “forget not the afflicted/poor/humble” (one of those three words depending on translation) even though we know God is omniscient and omnibenevolent and therefore couldn’t forget their suffering. I’d suppose this reason also extends to why we pray in the first place knowing that God’s will is unchanging and us asking Him to do something isn’t going to make Him do it unless He wills it; God gave us free will and the ability to participate in His will. By asking him to do something that is in his nature (have mercy, punish evil, protect the righteous, forgive, love etc.) or to not do something that isn’t in his nature (willing us to succumb to temptation), we aren’t trying to change His will, only to participate in it and show we accept it.

Thk you fr. Explained wonderfully as usual! But i have a question to you pls clarify. Does this translation " LEAD US NOT INTO TEMORATION " is the best possible one for the original Greek words? As you know there are many things in the Scripture when compared to the original Greek word the meaning completely changes like pulling the rug! pls clarify! thk you

Fr. Mike, can you comment on the revision of "lead us not into temptation" to "do not let us fall into temptation." Does it have different meanings and what are its implications? Thanks and greetings from Philippines!

for sure god never demands perfection from any one of us duing a trial in which we are continuing to do our best to follow his ways. Only Satan does that.

Hi! My hubby and I would really like to join the retreat but it's at capacity :( Is there any chance to secure a spot? Maybe double it as a KZfaq live event as well for an increased participant limit?
