There is a quote from Neil Degrasse Tyson that I couldn't stop thinking about: "One of the great challenges in life is knowing enough to think you're right but not enough to know you're wrong"

@Sword of the Spirit um, sure I guess. If you define it that way.

That's the Dunning-Kruger effect; the dumber and the more ignorant someone is, the more someone tends to think oneself smarter and more knowledgeable than anyone else. Religious apologists either suffer from this affliction or play as if you are... or both. And those are the rare honest ones.
@odojang

@Sword of the Spirit Do you mean that alleged entity who created a being he knew would disobey him and so punished him and all his descendants for eternity... almost all of which he later exterminated along almost all living things, out of disapointement in his own creation's failure which he made possible... then sacrificed himself to himself to forgive himself for the skewed game he made himself and yet still blames his own creation for... If so, you have a very strange definition of smart. Especially for something we still have absolutely no evidence of after millenias; only old, badly translated and heavily edited conflicting stories in one book of one tribe that are no different from any other story made up the world over about supernatural beings we once imagined out of lightning, volcanoes or the sun.

@Sword of the Spirit So you're saying you are dumber than this imaginary character who did all those stupid things in a many times translated and edited book of the Bronze age?

@Sword of the Spirit Please, keep your pity for all of those your own god with a highercase G, if he would exist, brings into the world; innocent human beings with a child's disease, a congenital deformity, in utter poverty and misery, in needless violence and suffering, letting 9 million of them die each year before the age of 5... and that you think are born tainted, soiled and fouled by a laughable crime against pride and egotism comitted by an equally imaginary ancestor thousands of years ago. How do I wish I was my own god; then I could at least save one, even just one of those lives your imaginary sorceror condemns and tortures even before birth.

@Sage of Synergism Kalam is incorrect in its premises. Within quantum mechanics causality breaks down, as we observe things happening with no discernable cause. Quantum mechanics operates on a probablistic rather than causal model. Which means that things do in fact begin without necessarily having a cause the whole time, it just happens on such a small scale that it is only relatively recently that we could observe it happening. The logic to Kalam's assertion was always a bit dodgy, when you consider that when we look at the universe on a human scale, we'd never actually seen anything begin, so any claims on what conditions were required for first causes were founded on empty assertions.

Man has clearly never heard of using thermite mixes to purify metals. Thermite can be made with a number of different oxides and metal powders, and it basically shifts all the oxygen atoms from the oxide to the metal, turning the oxide into a pure metal. They used a thermite reaction to purify uranium for the Manhattan Project, in fact.

Have you ever read the prisoner's dilemma? Have you ever wondered why cops separate potential criminals when interrogating them or even before? BTW - we dropped the religious guess because it didn't even achieve the traits necessary to become a scientific hypothesis. In addition, we have detected deep gravitational waves that appear to favor the big bang expanding universe. (Oh, and we have red shifts so we can tell that our galaxies are moving. It's not hard to see.. if you look. This is how we can predict the comets that are coming and tell the average person that "x" came within 150 KM of Earth or something.)

I love that these are ALWAYS geared to the believer. “See, now if someone ever challenges you, you can tell them they are wrong cause of these proofs” or something... My dad was a Methodist minister. His faith has changed scope and strength, over the years (he was never a biblical literalist as he actually reads Hebron, Greek and Latin and can see where translations are...flukie) and his definition of god has changed. Carl Sagan was his hero. But it’s cause he questioned the world himself, read lots of things, wondered, explored, was curious. And that made his faith richer and more expansive. He would never have thought to tell his church people “here’s the absolute proof, now you don’t have to have wonder”.

The first half made me bring up the question that I continually ask creationists for decades and have still yet to ever have any of them answer: Is there anything that happens on its own or is god required for everything? For example, if I take a handful of change and toss it on the ground, do the coins land in their final positions all on their own or does god come down and consciously, deliberately, and purposefully position them? Is there anything that happens all on its own? And as for the mousetrap, it turns out that it is reducibly complex. In fact, the mousetrap is an *evolved* structure. @@lower_case_t scientific theories on the evolution of life are not concerned with how life started, only how life evolved. Just because you can describe a process as "evolving" does not mean a theory such as the theory of natural selection is concerned with it. The word "evolve" just means change over time. Anything that changes can be described as undergoing some sort of "evolution," from molecules, to the flags of a country, to money, the universe, ect. You cannot conflate these things with evolutionary theories like natural selection, as natural selection is only concerned with the evolution of life, all other things that evolve are un-related. No one has ever claimed that the method by which automobiles evolved to their current state is described by natural selection
@lower_case_t

@@8698gil Yes. I agree to that. Still, evolution requires some sort of abiogenesis, so I can at least see why they constantly bring it up. Their big argument is that life cannot come from non-life, while a naturalistic view cannot even draw a clear line between inanimate and living objects and sees evolution as a continuation of abiogenesis once self-replicating entities have been established. So they think by claiming that the first part of this abiogenesis-evolution bundle is impossible they can debunk evolution altogether.

In the AronRa series there's an victim who escaped Pack's cult who says that Pack has never read a book he didn't write himself, so it's more probably that he doesn't know how stupid he is. Others, like D'Souza or Craig, know full well how full of shit they are. The real problem is that their _victims_ don't know how dumb their arguments are. _That_ is universally true. Even people who think Pack is an embarrassment will eat up the exact same bullshit if it's regurgitated by a different apologist. @PLANT POWERED PUNK How did you come up with multiple Antichrists? If Luke isn't true and you disregard Paul, then what religion are you? If the Antichrist(s) already were around back in ancient times, then why didn't the world end? Or, do you have a different meaning of Antichrist? It sounds like you are one of those 'holy spirit' interpreters that believes whatever they want without any real coherence, and then claim to be the only 'true' Christian's. Are you one of the enlightened 'true Christians' that God speaks to personally? If not, how do you know that Luke and Paul are satanic heretic. And if Luke and Paul are preverted, then wouldn't that put the legitimacy of the whole New Testament into question, and so the whole Bible? It's this kind of nonsense that makes Christianity so difficult to swallow for a lot of people. There is so much discention between denominations (and non denominations) that they may as well be different religions all together. And if they are all going to contradict each other to the point of being incompatible, then what sense does it make to believe in ANY of it? Without evidence for one belief over another even within Christianity, not to mention all the other theistic religions, choosing one is just guessing which one might be right. That's just totally arbitrary and irrational. What's the point? I don't think you understand at all why people deconvert, or you wouldn't have brought up the idiocy of an Antichrist. Supernatural demons and a final judgement doomsday is a good reason not to believe right there! That's even more ridiculous when so many holy inspired prophets and preachers have been told by God that the end was near and... well... it wasn't. Either God is lying to them or they delusionally believed God was talking to them or, most probably, none of that crap is true and it's nothing but a bunch of psychobabble.

Also why is the Bible still around after thousands of years people trying to destroy it? Why is it the most printed book in all of history? Also if you were to study the Bible and history and prophecy you would soon understand that the Bible is in fact evidence there is a God .

Oh dear, a preacher who doesn't seem to understand that energy can become matter and vice versa. (Or, matter is just another form of energy)

Yeah this guy is a cult leader here in my state of Ohio. He seems to have a thing against interracial relationships.
