The logic to Kalam's assertion was always a bit dodgy, when you consider that when we look at the universe on a human scale, we'd never actually seen anything begin, so any claims on what conditions were required for first causes were founded on empty assertions.

Their big argument is that life cannot come from non-life, while a naturalistic view cannot even draw a clear line between inanimate and living objects and sees evolution as a continuation of abiogenesis once self-replicating entities have been established. So they think by claiming that the first part of this abiogenesis-evolution bundle is impossible they can debunk evolution altogether.
