Helix DSP.3 for example has an gain knob that you can adjust to get the correct output voltage from the DSP. During the manual you shall use a clip light on the DSP to get the correct gain but I had the same problem as you with too high voltage out from the DSP with a clipping as a result. The DSP delivered more than 5 volt when I had the gain adjusted stated in the manual but my amps could just handle maximum 5 volt as input. I had to meassure the output voltage directly from the DSP with a multimeter instead and I adjust the gain that way to get it correct.

So, if your input voltage on your amp is 5v, are you adjusting the main volume at the source or lowering the output at the DSP?

I always test my whole signal path for clipping and voltage output. I do it with my 4ch oscilloscope. Start at outputs of head unit then at the end of the RCA’s going into my DSP. Then outputs of DSP . Then end of RCA’s going into amp. Then set gains of amp output. Checking voltage and clip at every in and output of all components even RCA’s let’s me know what everything is doing and know that I don’t have a faulty component or RCA set before putting all panels and what not back together.

Yes, that is a very good practice👍 Since I use digital input into tge DSP, the only place I can test for clipping is the DSP outputs. And since my gains on all amps are set to min, I don't have to worry about clipping those.

Thanks for this video. working on the same DSP tonight. Not sure the best way to bring the 8v down to 5v for the (mosconi) amps. I guess just make sure I stay -4db on all channels.

Don't forget that this test was done with a 0dB sine tone. Normal music will always be on a lower level. Read Adams comment below, he explains it much better.

@@RAW-CAt understood! Found out a few things. Gain is disabled in Direct DSP mode On mosconi. So you’re stuck at 5.3v input. 8v from the Helix gives me 3.6db overlap. I’m even getting a slightly clipped signal at the helix. Maybe 8.3v so that’s even a tiny bit of signal overlap. So basically everything is perfect for us and the car sounds amazing 🤩

In reality most tracks are recorded at -6db and above 80hz you will be fine at full volume as 20-40hz is the only octave that gets 0db in typical music distribution of energy, -6db is 2v at full scale on the volume, so you won’t ever see clipping at full volume unless it’s some chopped and screwed track, I also find it’s often the best recorded tracks that have lower levels not the worst recordings 👍🏼 Essentially you won’t ever clip the signal from the amp with a helix dsp and you can also go to +5db on the output with everyday music

Nice video. To get better view of the interesting clipping part the time setting on the oscilloscope could be set to show basically just like one half period. In this case voltage per square could be set to 5 instead of 10.

Hi just had the helix dsp m four installed and when turning the volume to my preferred setting pretty loud it starts clipping bad and now the shop is telling me I need to by new amps is this something that can be adjusted? The amps I am using in addition to the helix is JL HD 600/4 and JL HD 750/1

Hey, I really appreciate your videos as I am a hands-on car Audio enthusiast who likes to install, test, etc. I do have this as well as other dsp's. I am curious as to the HEC usb that you are using, at what bit rate it is providing. I am using the Bluetooth module on this and have been considering this one. Also, it looks like you are making your own custom rca cables and I wonder if you might be able to tell me what parts you are using as it is a really nice look. I really like the symmetry of having all of the rca's exactly the same. Thanks again for taking us on your hands-on journey.

Having had both the Bluetooth HEC and the USB HEC, can you honestly tell the difference? Are the added features of the Bluetooth HEC worth it? While I'm here, I would love to see you explain time alignment with a USB mic, using REW with an acoustic reference. You're very good at explaining things and I understand more than reading on random forums. I know just enough to be dangerous 😅

So if you end up having to boost In the eq, that freq would cause clipping? so inorder to get around that you would have to bring the overall gain on that channel down correct? question 2- If you add say 3db at 50hz then -2db@100hz but a very wide filter. would it still be +2~3db near 50-60 and therefor clipping? or would the narrow filter possibly bring it out of clipping. (basically would a narrow filter with boost clip at that frequency if a wide filter was also pulling down db)?

When you were increasing the 50Hz in the EQ to clipping on the o-scope, did the Gain and Output Level bar turn red?

The Helix DSP m four has 6V outputs on the RCAs. Your JL amps take 2V in on the low setting. Make sure to switch the JL amps to high input setting or turn down the Helix DSP. You are clipping the amplifier inputs.

If the helix is the source of the signal for the two JL amps then the Helix DSP wasn’t set up correctly. Gains should be set up right before clipping with a 0db signal to ensure no clipping whatsoever. That way your amps wouldn’t clip. Although if you are using a stock head unit, that can also introduce clipping at high volumes. So find the highest clean volume for the Stock radio. Then use that volume to set the dsp gain. And then you set gains for the amps.
