I am an “Old Girl RN” & we used Hibiclens 30-35 years ago as handwash in most of the ICU’s I worked in back in the 1980’s & early 1990’s. It was the only one that didn’t eventually start irritating or causing rashes to my hands but was very drying. That was one reason the hospitals changed over to more lotion-based handwashes. Also a cost factor, I’m sure. I used it for 3 days as a preventative measure before both my shoulder surgeries because my mother had FIVE surgeries and THREE joints placed into one hip before they got first the staph aureus and then MRSA under control--that was enough incentive for me!! She did use skin preps the hospital provided but I always wished she’d used hibiclens instead. I had my cousin use it -after patch testing for any reaction a couple weeks before his operation, of course- and he did well with it. He was desperate to avoid what my mother went through with her replacements. Sometimes a little prevention really is worth a pound of a dreadful cure!! Thanks for this video, Doc.

Forgot to add that I do not apply with a wash cloth because it stains them. I apply it once or twice a week in the areas mentioned here but I apply it by hand before I get in the shower so it has some time to work and then rinse in the shower. I alternate the Panoxyl with the same routine. This works well for me.

Told to use it after surgery on incisions. I also use it to wash my hands before I put the botanical serum my plastic surgeon's esthetician gave me to put on where she did Morpheus8. Had colonoscopy yesterday. Used it to wash nether regions in bidet during the prep (only threw up 3 times), which made me feel so gross around butt, and for shower after prep and after procedure. Using arnica gel on hematoma where the colonoscopy nurse tried to insert iv. She said she hit a valve and had to stop. Success in inner elbow. Said they don't like it there cus they roll you over, for the endoscopy (have hiatal hernia). Hate the prep, but gotta do it. Had uncle die from colon cancer. They always find and remove polyps and biopsy them. Had squamous cell carcinoma removed from arm couple of months ago,

My husband went to a infectious disease doctor last week, he has him using this on his face. Actually told him to use it on his whole body, let it sit for five minutes then rinse. He did tell him to keep it away from the eyes. None of these warnings about eye or ear damage. He has something on his chin that keeps coming back every time he runs out of antibiotics. So he has him using this and like five other different things.

Chlorhexidine hmm Interesting we use it here in Greece often in hospitals and of course its antiseptic brother povidone iodine (mostly in surgery aka betadine med.l.soap. 7,5 %). I honestly don't know myself if i these antiseptic agents work on feet and toe nail fungus 😅 probably no (my guess 😅). But Doctor Andrea is right these boys are more specific purposes and should not be misused. Skin issues like folliculitis and hidradenitis suppurativa are some examples given by Doctor Andrea. Please don't scorn the classic old friend "soap" because with water you can get rid of the harmful bacteria on your skin and the the beneficial ones untouched😊❤. Just put a little more faith and you all got this. Stay well❤.

There was a forerunner to this product that I used as a child. I believe it was phisoderm. It was in a green bottle. I had to use it as a child for impetigo and other infections, as I was rambunctious and a tomboy with frequent injuries. I keep this in my shower for occasional stubborn yeast problems in my skin folds, especially in the summer. And it is always given to me to wash before surgery. Thanks for the review!

I remember Phisoderm in the green bottle! I used it also. It also came as a cleansing bar, that I used to wash my face. Very popular in its time. There was also a product called Phisohex, which was similar to hibiclens, but different ingredients. It was later pulled off the market due to concerns over its main ingredient.

Two commercial preparations using hexachlorophene, pHisoDerm and pHisoHex, were widely used as antibacterial skin cleansers in the treatment of acne, (with pHisoDerm developed for those allergic to the active ingredients in pHisoHex). During the 1960s, both were available over the counter in the US. After the ban, pHisoDerm was reformulated without hexachlorophene, and continued to be sold over-the-counter, while pHisoHex, (which contained 3% hexachlorophene - 3 times the legal limit imposed in 1972),[7] became available as a prescription body wash.

I really like the RiteAid brand because it's not bright red and lathers more like a body wash. A lot of things will inactivate the chlorhexidine, and applying bleach cleaners to surfaces that frequently come in contact with chlorhexidine can cause permanent brownish stains.

If you are regularly using hibiclens hands you need to buy the larger bottle of hibiclens that has the pump top that dispenses it as foam. It is so much easier to use and is a game changer for minimizing the amount the amount that is wasted when you are using it. With the bottles that dispense it just as is in liquid form I was unintentionally using more than was necessary and half of it was not lathering very well, etc. Doesn’t happen with the foam.

I’m on a long term mirco dose of accutane for my facial acne. The low dose doesn’t keep my chest acne under control (which can be difficult). Using this twice a day keeps it fully clear, I only use it on my middle chest and no where else.

Chlorhexidine (Walgreens brand) cured my persistent jock itch. I had bad flare-ups for months. I tried several home remedies and OTC products and the itch would still persist. It took about 5 days to finally eliminate to where I don't even have to put on anti-fungal cream. I haven't had a need to scratch at all. After 7 days I will back off to using it once per week just to make sure whatever I had doesn't come back. I was also getting a slight itch under my armpit. So I washed with CHG one time and the itch is gone. There was a small study done on CHG's effect on the groin. It eliminated 99% of all bacteria within 30 min of application. Also, people use it as an oral rinse too. I feel it is generally very safe. This stuff is a lifesaver.

@@timothyh1965 Use store brand Walgreens hibiclens (chlorhexidine Gluconate - CHG). I also buy store-brand anti-dandruff shampoo in both white and blue bottles. I make a big lather with all at the same time. Leave on for a minute or two then rinse. I only use anti-fungal and hydrocortisone cream if I get the occasional flare up which is a lot less severe and starting to be a rare occurrence.

Can Dr. Dray answer this? I am a male who will undergo surgery in the genital area. My urologist told me to start using Hibiclens one week prior to surgery. Yet you say NOT to use Hibiclens in the genital area. Why is that? I can't find any reference as to why I shouldn't use Hibiclens in the genital area yet that is where my surgery will occur. Please advise.
