There is a lot of discussion online about the impacts and implecations of humidity issues on our acoustic guitars. As we have reached the Summer months here in the UK and across the Northern hemisphere, Meg is taking a look at some of the key problems we can run into with increased humidity.
Humidity refers to the amount of water vapour in the air at any given time, when the water vapour is low the humidity is dryer and when the water vapour is high the humidity is much wetter. These conditions can drastically effect wood and how we work with wood.
Wood is a hygroscopic material, sensitive to inconsistent temperatures and levels in humidity. If the air humidity is too low, it will make wood release water molecules, which leads to cracking, warping, and other issues that make the wood unfit for production. Fluctuations in temperatures and humidity levels affect the physical condition of hygroscopic materials. Whether it is for construction, decoration or other uses - it is vital that wood is always stored and aged correctly to ensure that it does not shrink, crack or warp.
Controlling the environment is critical in any type of production involving wood - sawmills, window, door, and furniture production, building component construction, wood veneer manufacture etc.
For this reason, us as guitarists must also pay close attention to humidity as it changes throughout the year. In the summer time, specifically here in the UK we will most commonly see the humidity start to creep up above the recommended 45-55% for optimum guitar storage.
When this happens there are some actions we can take to help prevent any more serious issues occurring. One of the first things we can do is use a hygrometer to measure the humidity in the environment around us. If, from there, you need to take action one thing we can do is use the fantastic tools from the planet waves range, the humidipak and the soundhole humidifier.
