From #bonnieraitt's 1979 album "The Glow", this alto sax solo on the #isaachayes song "Your Good Thing" is a masterclass in musical simplicity, taste, and soul.

Exceptionally varied phrasing of David Sanborn's very active saxophone solo. The mind, the fingers, and the mouth working together to produce a super artistically-expressive contribution to the recording.

The Glow is one of my all-time favorite albums and this breakdown was great. Thanks Paul!

Just came across your video. Nice breakdown/analysis. Fan of DS since the 70s when we first saw him playing the solo on James Taylor's Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight in concert. Another favorite solo is on Linda Ronstadt's Ooh Baby Baby. You're right. He sings with his sax and his style is very recognizable. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Excellent on the breakdown of this tune.. former music theory student here and huge David Sanborn fan. I love it when an analysis includes the keyboard references in your narrative. Thanks, Professor Croteau.

It wasn’t just his tone but how he played those signature clusters. We could all play them as written but it wouldn’t sound like Dave even if we had the same setup. He simply had his own voice

Yes he did, indeed. Mimicked by many, influenced countless many more, including me. And he had it at a young age... listen to his stuff with Paul Butterfield, the ingredients were already there.

@@YoPaulieMusic yes his tone and voice on tunes like Carly’s song were there early on. Big influence on me even before I picked up the sax.

Nice, Paul! I don’t think I’d heard that either and I’m a big Bonnie fan. A couple observations: That opening lick sounds to me like he’s leaving his tongue on the reed like ghosting. And that repeated high F sounds like he did the “Turrentine” thing of switching between the “fork” and palm-key fingerings. Kinda the sax version of the classic Chuck Berry repeated-note guitar riff (which Chuck probably stole from sax players ;^) Another little known Sanborn recording is a three sax thing he did with Brecker and Ronnie Cuber a LONG time ago. I’ve never had the recording, but some guys back at NTSU had it. I just found it on Ytube, it’s called ‘Super Funky Sax’ recorded in 1980 - so cool!

A unique sound that only David Sanborn can produce from the alto saxophone.

I love his tone from that era. He changed it over time to his more recent tone, but I always enjoyed that old tone. I am not exactly sure of the “why” for his sound change. Maybe someone has some insight?

Another track I had not heard before. Listening to that solo I had to figure out if it really was Dave or not since it sounds so stylistically different than him. I see the album credits list him as the soloist, but man, something just doesn't sound right. The articulation, and the cleanliness of the subtle bebop influences... but then he hits the high A and sounds like Dave. MIght have to do a video on this one. :)

It is an unusual solo for him and an odd side gig but to my ear, particularly the altissimo, it’s definitely him.

Did David Sanborn die (based on a comment below)? Saw him in Limerick, Ireland a few years ago - he is/was a sax genius. If he has passed, why was this not mentioned at the top of this video - out of respect to the great man?

I dedicated an entire video to him the day I found out he died... and have released several since. It hit me hard, I worked for him for years. I don't want to mention his death in every video, I made my point in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fdpyiKmd1t-8mGg.html

Great stuff, although the casual transposition switching sometimes confusing for me as a keyboardist. I would probably prefer to transpose switch to the notated key and start off from C mixolydian, is that wrong?
@YoPaulieMusic
@YoPaulieMusic 3 ай бұрын
I sometimes debate whether or not to do these in concert pitch instead of Eb or Bb (depending on the horn playing the solo). But, I think it's best to notate it in the key of the horn so that we see where exactly on the instrument things are happening. I mentioned concert pitch when I was playing piano during the video.. if I played the concert chords but called them the Eb part chords, someone else would have called me out for that being confusing as well. :)

Nits: this tune sounds like 6/8 not 12/8. Also, Bb/C is essentially C7sus. Lastly, the grace notes could be written as triplet 16ths
@YoPaulieMusic
@YoPaulieMusic 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the nits... I love people that pay attention to the details like that. :) I thought about triplet 16ths, but took the easy path. I'm using MuseScore for this, it does a decent job for a free, opensource tool. A nit back at you... Bb/C would be C9sus because the D is present in the voicing. ;)
