Hi: I am one of the developers of the MS/Asobo ATR: we have listened to some users having issues with the readability of the DUs...so one of the next updates will come with an EFB slider to adjust the DU Font size. Be aware though that his might not look perfect in all situations with larger font sizes. We hope this feature still pleases the community, though. Have fun with the ATR!

Thanks very much for the info, Ben and indeed the ATR! That sounds like a great solution. It's very commendable, that the team tried to replicate the displays accurately, but of course this can have its limitations within the sim. At least with your proposed measure, everyone should be able to enjoy the ATR more readily : ) Cheers and all the best!

Hi Smolex, If I had to guess, it’s probably something to do with the fact the addon was recently updated (and perhaps the Marketplace now counts it as a “new” product). It’s not the first time I’ve seen something like that happen with regards to ratings on the Marketplace but undoubtedly, the ATR has sold *a lot* of units (and I’m sure received a lot of reviews) haha. All the best : )

It's great to see the ATR and although there are problems, I'm certain that they will be sorted. The price is excellent and I think once the problems are fixed the value will be there. Always good to see Air New Zealand waving the flag, especially flying into NZGS. That's a route I have taken many aeroplanes, both in the sim and in the real world. Many thanks for a great video and review.

Indeed Mr Squirel; it’s nice to finally have a regional turboprop in the sim and a decent / very fairly priced one at that. The ATR is obviously very good value for money, I think Asobo were just a touch ambitious with their “Expert Level” moniker and that’s really where most of the blowback stems from (the product is a fine effort in and of itself). As you say, hopefully the major issues will be fixed up and indeed we have just seen the first patch for the addon. I’m glad you enjoyed another NZ outing, it’s always somewhere that is an absolute pleasure to fly (indeed, I’m in the process of recording another NZ vid at the moment haha)! My pleasure on the video! Take care and all the best : )

There is a way to enter airways without freezing the system. Click on the softkey next to the airway field and select the desired airway from the pop-up list provided as opposed to keying the airway name into the airway field. Content provider 737NG Driver has a video that goes into more detail.

That is actually the "correct" way to do this as per ATR FCOM and the reason that bug was overlooked is probably that it was beta tested by ATR pilots that were doing everything by the book. I wish Asobo included aircraft in their public beta testing as a lot of bugs would be found by "incompetent" people , I suspect a few more quirks are do to this and they will be ironed out !

Whenever I do this to enter an airway, it puts it on the flight plan but copies the airway like 5 times over, and I have to go in and delete the extra checkpoints one by one. Very frustrating.

Thank you very much Paul, I’m glad you found the video to be of use! Certainly, the ATR seems to have divided opinion haha. I think a lot of that came down to expectation management, “expert level” is rather a loaded moniker in many respects (if the product had been marketed as any other, I don’t think anyone would disagree that the ATR offers solid value for money). I enjoyed the ATR, but the addon isn’t without its flaws, hopefully I conveyed both of those points during the video : ) Cheers and all the best!

People have serious problems with placing expectations. The whole debate about the ATR comes from that. When a plane takes 20+ minutes to start up, you need a manual for knowing its ins and outs and it's on the level of the CRJ or the FBW A320 then I think it's rightfully called an expert level product. Also, bugs don't affect systems fidelity, they're just errors to be fixed, but the fidelity is the same regardless. For this price, I really don't see any better deal in the marketplace right now, for people who like airliners. Thank you for the detailed review!
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Hello Gábor, I’m 50/50 with you on that one ; ) Indeed, expectation management can often be a problem. Sometimes it’s self-induced and sometimes the devs have a part to play (as has been said on a number of occasions, the fact that many of these terms such as “study level” etc are open to interpretation, often adds fuel to the fire also). The ATR’s main “issue”, was that people set their hopes very high (I would argue, somewhat as a result of the marketing) and then many felt a little bit disappointed / frustrated as a result. There’s no doubt in my mind, has the ATR been marketed as “just” another product, we’d all be singing it’s praises. Where I disagree somewhat, is that to me, “study level” or (arguably even more so) “expert level”, really suggests the pinnacle in terms of fidelity / accuracy etc. To me, neither the CRJ, FBW A320, or indeed the ATR fall under that umbrella (though of course there’s no right or wrong answer, it’s just *my* opinion). Bugs are not the same as a lack I systems fidelity, I agree, but on the face of it, the ATR seemed to have areas that were “lacking”, as compared with the likes of the Fenix A320, PMDG 737 etc. All of the above being said, I do think the ATR is a very solid offering for the price! As I said in the video, I think it’s a brilliant offering for “intermediate” simmers and those of us who don’t need every rivet to be in the correct spot, before we can go and enjoy the flight. It’s great to see that the first update for the aircraft has already been put out and I hope we will see the ATR go from strength to strength. That’s my take on the situation anyway, for what it’s worth haha. Cheers for your thoughts and all the best! : )

37:30 Where entering weights and fuel are concerned, there are two ways. The first is to enter them into the FMS to populate the EFB. The second is to set them in the sim's own weight panel, then long--press the ZFW and fuel LSK buttons to transfer that to the airplane.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much for the info, Jon! The long-press option is certainly a good trick to know. What I was ideally after, was that the EFB take the sim’s weight data and display that directly or better yet, that the aircraft’s weight can be adjusted via the EFB. Currently, the logic seems to be a bit backwards to me, as it’s not much use having an EFB which tells you what you already know (having already entered the data into the MCDU). Much appreciated! All the best : )

I appreciate your unbiased review and preparation work prior to publish this review. The Expert label defined by MS is more a label to differentiate within their aircraft offering, like also their take on vintage or historical aircraft. As MS does not want to publish aircraft with failure simulation, at least until current, study level is term not applicable, but the term Expert is more meant that it is required to deep dive into systems and functionalities to proper fly the aircraft. The lack of manuals on all their aircraft is their decision and I hope it will be revised to allow simmers to have an easier start into flying complex airliners, which certainly require a basic "expertise" in aircraft system and navigation skills.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much for the clarification, Alexander and indeed your kind words. Personally, I still feel that the “expert” moniker is somewhat misleading, but I can appreciate that Asobo wants to differentiate this addon series from the others. “Advanced” (or something similar) might have perhaps been a better term (to me, “expert” really suggests the highest level in complexity). As much as I love Asobo and the sim that they have given us, I strongly disagree with their decision regarding manuals; documentation is not a “nice to have”, it’s an important part of the product (especially one of this complexity) and to call something “expert level” and then not provide a manual, seems a little bit of a juxtaposition to me. It’s also disappointing to see that this trend is starting to catch on with other developers. We have arguably the greatest flight simulator of all time, but it’s sad that new simmers are not being given the same opportunities to learn / improve, as many of us were in older sims (tutorials and documentation were always superb in older Microsoft sims). Thanks very much once again! All the best : )

I have been eagerly waiting for your review. You always bring the quality! I have to say I agree with most points, yet I´ve really enjoyed the ATR so far. The systems works great for completing a normal flight with basically all buttons operational and that`s generally what I`m looking for. I can accept applying some forward pressure on my yoke until rotation until they fix that. I think the Expert Series label makes sense if viewed within the Asobo/Microsoft line of addons. This is after all a lot more complex than a famous flyer or local legend and not something really well suitable as someone`s first aircraft. One small detail I caught was the flashing MDA. The flashing stops if you set the MDA on the FO`s side as well. Also the screens look great and are easily readable in VR.

Many thanks once again, Mark! I very much agree that for the “average” simmer, the ATR is a nice option and indeed, I largely enjoyed the addon myself. “Expert level” suggests to me, that the addon ought to be at the very pinnacle of what we can expect from a product and I don’t think the ATR is there, but maybe that’s just an issue with my interpretation (although I do think the marketing from Asobo could have been a bit clearer). As you rightly mention, for the price, the ATR in undoubtedly an excellent offering and it’s really just a few bugs holding it back (some of which have already been fixed up). There's certainly a big market for regional jets and turbo-props in MSFS. Lots of simmers that like to be thorough with their flights but don't want to spend numerous hours being engaged like you would for long haul flights. Would like to see some development on an ERJ-145/135, Saab 340, and perhaps a CRJ-100/200 in the future.

Hi Zarniwoop, It is great to see a regional turboprop in the sim and the ATR offers solid value for money overall. The displays are indeed very tricky to read, but the good news is that the devs seem to have taken that feedback onboard and will apparently be addressing display readability in a later update (they initially wanted to go for accurate displays, which is commendable, but perhaps not practical in this case). The first update has already been put out, which is rather promising and hopefully we’ll see further tweaks to other areas of the product going forward. Cheers and all the best! : )

For the aircraft setup, MS wants that the "In Sim Loadpage" should be used and the data then transfers automatically to the EFB. That then calculates the reference data based on the weather conditions set. By that the prep is done and can be transferred to the FMS.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
That’s fair enough Alexander. I think it’s preferable to be able to do these sorts of things from within the EFB, but if that’s what Asobo prefers, who am I to argue haha. My only real gripe, was that the weight and balance data was not showing on the EFB, until after the MCDU has been populated. Ideally (in my opinion), the EFB should take the weight data from the sim and then one can readily see what needs to be entered into the MCDU (as is the case with most addons, including the CRJ). I hope that makes sense. Cheers once again : )

The auto-rotation and the long floating on landing have been addressed in the first update. It was an issue of ground effect. In terms of sensitivity on controls, the reference feel should be achieved with the sensitivity at -30 as this is the default value and so it was taken as the base. In terms of CRZ flight performance the aircraft flies at standard weather within 3% of deviation on FL 160 to 240.

That’s great to hear Alexander and it’s brilliant to see that the first update has already been put out. That’s an interesting point regarding control sensitivities; I noticed recently, that the default values have changed in the sim and thought that was a bit odd (surely “0” ought to be the baseline and then the sim’s flight modelling tweaked from there). I have my controls set at the default values (other than rudder sensitivity at -50) but I am using a joystick, which of course is going to give a snappier response than a yoke with a decent throw. Indeed, Stanley; the sounds aren’t “bad” per se, but even to a layman (when it comes to the ATR), it’s pretty clear that the soundset doesn’t do much to capture the noise / atmosphere of a turboprop. Thanks very much once again, Ceegnz! Haha what can I say, I’m a one-trick pony XD To be fair, whilst I haven’t gotten a straight answer either way (and this is the sort of thing where a manual would really come in handy!), my understanding is that using the LSK is the “ATR” way of doing things (hence why none of the real world ATR drivers found the bug), but that entering the airways manually, should still be a valid option also (the ATR’s patch notes would seem to suggest that). Have I got the wrong end of the stick there? Radio sometimes stops working if you enter a frequency manually. 8. The "Minimal lightning" button also includes light inside the cockpit comming from no apparent light source. 9. Airways are broken, as other people have noted. 10. Aircraft always need aileron trim and rudder trim to the right to fly straight (maybe a feature?) 11. I will just quickly say that the price point is not really a factor here so much. This is because with it being released under a publisher contract of sorts with Microsoft, the final cost of the DLC has been somewhat subsidised. If Hanns went and tried to publish this on his own, it would no doubt be way more expensive (maybe by at least ~£20). So, the final cost doesn't matter here. Furthermore, Hanns himself has said this ATR was never intended to be 100% simulated. However, he wanted it to at least have realistic flight systems etc. 737NG does a good video discussing the lack consistency between definitions for certain things.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much for your thoughts, Lawrence. I take your point and 100% agree - there’s no way the ATR would have been so cheap without Asobo’s backing, but (I think) one can only really judge a product based on what it actually costs, rather than what it probably *should* cost (and at the end of the day, I think most are very happy that we now have a sim that is generally affordable, in terms of addon purchases etc). I wasn’t really expecting the ATR to be “study level”, but I can understand (given Asobo’s “expert level” marketing) why many people were and I can appreciate why they felt a little bit let down as a result. I’m no marketing expert haha, but it’s probably a little bit better to underpromise and overdeliver, rather than vice versa. As you say, with no dictionary definition of all these terms, people end up creating their own ideas / expectations. At the end of the day, I do think the ATR is a good product and will suit many simmers perfectly. There were one or two bugs I would have liked to have seen fixed before release, but that is true of most products these days. Cheers once again and all the best! : )

I think the "expert" moniker is acceptable as a different name than "Study sim". Like you said with "study sim" it's not some sort of a standardized name recognised by OSI. And as you said at the end with some bug fixes it might be just fine for this name "expert" which for me would mean "hard level" especially for xbox market that needed some easy and clear to understand category. Lots of casual players in the sim... me included and this tier named "expert" certainly doesn't bother me. Bugs aside... that hopefully will be fixed. And for the price... I think is fine. Expert shall be... :D
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Hi Zaelu, Of course, neither moniker has a dictionary definition and what is considered “study level”, will vary from one simmer to the next. Arguably, “expert level” is actually less open interpretation haha, but as you (and others) point out, what constitutes “expert”, is somewhat relative; I think many “legacy simmers” felt a little bit let down by the depth of the ATR, given the marketing, but for the “average” MSFS user, the ATR certainly represents a significant step up in complexity. That’s rather what I alluded to in my video; for the more casual simmers amongst us, or simmers at an “intermediate” level, the ATR is a great option, for those who prefer the Fenix A320, or the PMDG 737, the ATR probably isn’t quite going to “scratch that itch” ; ) Either way, I’m really glad you’re enjoying the aircraft and it’s great to see that an update has been put out already : ) Cheers!

I think you nailed it there that this is an intermediate level aircraft. I agree some of the criticisms are unfair, and I think the general negativity towards this aircraft is purely brought on by the "expert" label. If they had never mentioned that word, this would've been a pretty smooth and enjoyable release (bugs aside). I think they've unfortunately done some pretty long term PR damage by hyping everyone up for study level (which I too assumed is what they meant by expert) and letting them down. The other unfortunate thing is that it seems Blackbird (who are consistently capable of making expert/study level addons) dropped their own ATR project due to competitive disadvantages against Asobo. I think had they known the actual fidelity level this aircraft was aiming for they would've continued development. Maybe they will pick it up again but they already have a lot on the go so I'd be surprised. Great, and very fair review!

As someone who has been very critical of this plane - yes, exactly. This plane's definitely worth the 20€ asking price (assuming they'll fix the airway freeze - considering the sim's loading time, that is a pretty big annoyance), but marketing it as "expert level" shows that MS/Asobo have a weird definition of "expert".

@@Taschenschieber People do not realize that the terms "study level" is just a marketing thing used by devs to make their products sound more appealing with a lot of these lacking in many way the closest available right now in MSFS would be the Fenix 320 and PMDG 737's because of their extensive failures simulations and abnormal procedures. At the end of the day not many people use MSFS to do emergency procedures not to mention that you can only really practice the checklist and not the CRM aspect in a home sim and the latter being an essential part of EP's , Aircraft that allow you to follow FCOM for normal procedures only are not an "inferior" product in any way ..... the Asobo/ini A310 FBW 320 or the CRJ for that matter are all nice to fly following normal procedures.

@@themighty222 Followed FCOM and completed 28 flights in it so far without ever encountering normal ops discrepancies just the known bugs (some of the instruments/buttons freezing not responding) bugs are not a problem with the aircraft itself though and to be expected with any initial release of software. I have not pushed the flight model nor have I ever flown a real ATR so I don't have anything I can judge it against other than other similar aircraft in sims which they are not many. Are you a real ATR pilot how do you properly judge the flight model of an aircraft in MSFS ? Flight models in MSFS are still a huge moot point with both the PMDG 737's and Fenix having incorrect engine perf and fuel burn and inherent issues with MSFS turboprop and rotor physics. For me the ATR is on par with the INI/Asobo A310 as a day to day ops simulation and the A310 was probably more broken on release as it killed fps and had autopilot issues and physics problems.

Thanks very much TM222, I’m glad you felt that the review broadly hit that nail on the head. I very much agree with your points; Asobo shot themselves in the foot a bit with the marketing. Had this just been another “Local Legend” (and it could have been with the NZ update), we’d all be ranting and raving about what a steal the addon is for $10/20 haha. The bugs are unfortunate, but par for the course these days and it looks as though (with the recent update) most of the ATR’s issues will get fixed up. I’m very much in the same boat, in as much as I’m sad that the Asobo ATR may have killed off the Blackbird version of the aircraft (which no doubt would have been superior). Hello again Ezio, I certainly apologise / sympathise but unfortunately, as I mentioned previously, it’s really tricky to slow down one’s natural rhythm haha. Of course, I want everyone to be able to enjoy the content; perhaps I’ll put out a poll and see if the general consensus aligns with your viewpoint (and then move from there). As you can probably tell, I’m far from a natural orator, so making these sorts of changes is harder (for me) than it may sound. It’s not something I’ve been doing intentionally but once again, I thank you for your feedback and will endeavour to continue improving the content. Cheers and all the best! : )

I think that the ‘Expert Level’ naming applies to the Xbox platform only and not the PC platform. They really should sort this out as it’s misleading. You can’t compare it to some of the better PC addons (PMDG/Fenix).
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
That’s a fair point Ed and an angle that I hadn’t really considered. For the “average” MSFS user, the ATR is probably a very advanced offering and it’s probably largely the “legacy simmers”, who got put out of joint by the “expert” labelling. As you say though, the ATR simply isn’t comparable with the the Fenix, PMDG and Leonardo offerings, so I think “expert level” is still a touch generous. “Intermediate level” really sums up the ATR for me, but granted that doesn’t sound very catchy from a marketing perspective XD Cheers and all the best! : )

Hello Richard, It seems quite a few people have been having issues with throttles and condition levers (I think there are some bugs). The operation of the throttles should be pretty straightforward; one basically places the throttles in the “notch” detent from takeoff, all the way through to top of descent and then manually adjusts the throttles to maintain the speed thereafter (depending on the autopilot mode in use). Has the recent update fixed your problem? Cheers, all the best! : )

Hi Mr E, I’m not 100% sure how one would program the MCDU under those circumstances (not having tried an air start myself) but at a guess, rather than putting ZZZZ in the departure field, enter a real-world ICAO code - the arrival code should suffice (eg EGLL/EGLL). Hello João, I’m afraid I can’t offer up much help on that one. I haven’t really investigated / tested different sensitivity settings within MSFS. By default, the sim is indeed too sensitive on the controls, but I think there are some fundamental areas of the flight modelling that need fixing up, in order to address that. Another reason that I haven’t really played around with the sensitivity settings, is that given the number of reviews I do, I think it’s easier / fairer to keep the sim’s default settings and then I’m assessing each addon from a level playing field. All of the above being said, I do use a -50 curve on my rudder haha, as rudder inputs are currently just waaaay too sensitive in MSFS. Sorry I can’t be of more help on that one. All the best! : )

It’s a fair point Michael, in that what one considers to be “expert”, is all relative. We can always count on you for a measured honest review. Thank you! There should be no issue with a faithful recreation no matter the level of fidelity within reason - both the hyper-critical and content creators seemingly editing out the blemishes (or avoiding them on stream) are out of line IMHO. One thing I also really don’t like being on Xbox is the lack of default key binds or interactive checklists. For a first party plane to not include these and not include a manual is frustrating no matter the price. I was able to fly the A310 with the interactive checklist and learn what I can improve for next time. I’ll pass on the ATR and see if it ever gets updated. HH/MS/Asobo don’t have a great track record here.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Tickle! I certainly try my best to display any product in an entertaining and positive light, whilst including any blemishes I find along the way haha (some addons hold up better to that approach than others ha). I would imagine, trying to use such an aircraft on the console can be a bit tricky at the best of times. I know some PC users were also very miffed about the lack of keybinds. I’m surprised re the interactive checklists, as I think the aircraft had them on the PC (unless my memory is completely failing me). I think the lack of documentation is a little bit unforgivable and it’s annoying that we’re seeing this trend continue (all the more so, when the addon is this complex). A manual should be considered an important part of any addon, not merely an “optional extra”. Still, it’s great to see that the first update is already out. I too am wondering what sort of updates we’ll see going forwards. . . Cheers once again and all the best! : )

Very nicely modelled aircraft but why are they sending them out not completely finished unlike in FSX
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
I think there’s a couple of reasons Andy; 1) Unlike with FSX, it’s now very easy these days, for devs to update products after the fact (with almost everyone having a decent internet connection. 2) Most “Asobo” aircraft are released to tie-in with a specific sim update and therefore have a specific deadline for release. I think this tends to lead towards products being rushed out. 3) I think it’s also just a case of “because they can”. Putting a product on sale before completion, seems to have become industry standard with most forms of software, unfortunately. People seem to be willing to buy a product, regardless of whether or not it has been finished. Devs are aware of this and obviously the practice means they can get the money rolling in sooner rather than later. Personally, I’m generally not a fan of this “early access” model, but I’m pretty sure it’s here to stay. The ATR has received a couple of significant updates at this point though and given the price, I think the addon is in a fairly decent place now (though there is still work to be done). Cheers, all the best! : )

Hi Takis, I’m afraid, I can’t really go over everything in a single KZfaq comment but, there’s no auto throttle in the ATR so, thrust / speed are always controlled manually. For VNAV and VS, the aircraft will fly the programmed / selected profile and it’s up to you to adjust the throttles, in order to maintain your desired speed. For IAS hold, the aircraft will instead hold the selected speed and you can then adjust the power levers, in order to adjust your rate of descent. I hope that helps a little? All the best : )
