@@raymondo162 This version of the Kalk was never designed to be a bike for the street and of course it is not legal, but this has nothing to do with ABS (Sur-ron in Germany is 100% street legal and has no ABS), but this bike comes like a Kawasaki KX or Honda CR. These are moto cross bikes without any light, blinker, speedometer or mirrors. 14k is way to much money, but these bikes are made in small numbers not like Sur-ron which can build hundredthousend of them cheap in factories in China. but I have to say this Öhlins Suspension is really nice and would also look good on a Sur-ron ;-) ...unfortunately the Öhlins fork and Öhlins damper together cost as much as a new sur-ron, so it is not appropriate to compare the Cake to the Sur-ron. There is a version with a different suspension for 8500€ and a street legal one for 9500€, of course without ABS which is only needed for bike over 125ccm...lol

I rode this and the Ösa last week but on the street, it was a blast, the Ösa too, so low down with weight and big tires made it quite fun. The Calk rode great on the street, coming from a dr650 I didn't notice any oddities with the geometry or weight, haven't ridden a small dirt bike though, so to me it felt pretty natural, the DR carries it's weight high as well. I was very impressed with the suspension and breaks, again all on the street, but it was pretty fun hitting 65 in a 25 wail having people in the neighborhood smile and wave nicely to you, it's amazing how noise changes people's attitudes. To me it's between the cake and a surron, its just a matter of if you want to put all the time and energy into a surron to make it as good as the cake is stock, they have a digital readout on most of the bikes now, the ones I tried had a speedo and volt readout, all that good stuff. The DR650 is to me like the surron, it's not really that great untill you dump 4-6 grand into it, great shell, but needs work. The cake seems just great out of the box, without dumping 5 grand and hours of research into how to make it better or faster. But again the surron is compelling because of that aftermarket community that can make a product better over time, it's like the only open source ebike right now, that to me is awesome.

I do like your videos as I am interested in the progression of the Ebikes. A couple of thoughts on your videos. I appreciate riding the different bikes on the same trail for comparison. They look like really fun flowing trails. 1 - Would you be able to incorporate some slow technical "rock crawling" type terrain to convey throttle control/ergos/handling (such as high cg, fork rake, seat width, etc). 2 - At the end as you are discussing the bikes components, would you show them instead of the steady shot of your helmet. I understand the need to advertise 6D helmets (I wear a 6D also) and FXR gear, but the bikes are the star of the show. Overall, very good videos. Keep them coming!

My son and I just did a 2 hour off road test ride on this bike. I was thoroughly impressed. He rides a YZ250FX and crosstrains on a mountain bike. I've got a KTM 350, 500 and 690. We were excited by the suspension, speed and "flickability" of this bike. It is definitely in a niche by itself. I don't think its fair to compare it to anything other than another e-motorcycle with similar weight and suspension. I wanted it as soon as I got off it. Admittedly, the price is tough to swallow. However, as the owner of a VW e-Golf, I will say how much I am thrilled by the lack of maintenance or upkeep costs. That vehicle costs nothing more than tires. I expect the same of this. This is the future of riding. Its a steep price tag now but with no maintenance, is almost justifiable. ;) I appreciate the review. I found it thorough and accurate. Riding it made me want to save up and buy one. I would have no problem riding this for 30-40 miles alongside my buddies on dirtbikes. Just my $.02.

@@ElectricCycleRider FYI, since I posted this I've bought 2! The Kalk OR and the Kalk Ink. Love them. What I find most peculiar about this is that they have better suspension on the OR but weak rims/tires. The OR has more of a MTB wheel and we've already got about 5 dings on each side of the rim on the rear wheel. However, the Ink has much more robust motorcycle rims/tires and less suspension. Regardless, we are riding 2-3 days a week and enjoying the heck out of them. I've already had two neighbors get one after riding mine.

Great vid again bud👊I think I'm in agreement with the majority that it is indeed bloody ugly 😬 Without riding one myself you can tell that it looks like it rides similar to a trial bikes body position ish.Big big fan of the super high quality custom built suspension and a low volt high power motor and battery drive system.Again though the cost of these machines is outside most people's spare cash bit of fun fund lol.Still think buying a rolling Moto bike chassis and adding a qs138 90 drive system is still the way to go and my next build project.That way you get the suspension and overall experience of a proper Mx bike with the exception of noise, most maintenance and huge amounts of torque 🤤 The next bike you need to get is the one and only TORP😍 now that is in my eyes gorgeous looking hybrid MTB/Mx bike👌👍

So this is gonna be long... I did a test ride on the Kalk a few days ago on a 1 mile single track loop. First of all major props to Cake for having these demo days. It really speaks to the confidence the company has in it's products. I rode both the version in the video "OR" and the " OR Race" version. The difference in for the most part the wheels and tires. The "OR" has propriety trials type tires and rims that are similar to a fat bike. The " OR Race" version has 19' front and 18' rear wheels and MX tires. The build quality of this bike is impressive. Much more on the line of a Honda or KTM than a Talaria or Surron. The bike has great power. 6kw nominal and 11kw peak and the throttle response is very linear and predictable. The brakes are Formula motorcycle brakes and will outperform ANY MTB setup. Ohlins suspension front and rear that when you turn the clickers they actually do something unlike DNM/Fast ace/KKE. I first ran it at level 1 power and level 1 regen which is no regen. Before I finished the first lap I switched to level 2 power and level 2 regen. Power level 2 felt very comfortable even on rock hard braking bumps and 1/2 buried rocks and regen was light. I switched to regen level 3 which I didn't think that was equivalent to a 4 stroke. Its more like engine braking between a 4 stroke and 2 stroke. The OR versions tires are not suited to hard core off-road riding. The bike wants to wash out and knife on every turn and didn't feel comfortable. The rep set the tire pressure at 19 front and back so that didn't help that. The seat is KTM hard but is so long that there is plenty of room to move around on. I then took out the Race and instantly the MX tires felt wayyyy better. I had so much more trust in the front end in turns, braking and in the mini jumps. The bike got good drive out of the turns unlike the standard OR wich slid out every time I tried to drive out of a turn. The Race version is defiantly the choice for off road with out a doubt. I set the bike to power level 3 and regen level 3. Power wise I guess it would be close to 125 level but instant torque and less top end. The brakes are set up moto style and there is an optional foot brake for the rear. The ergos of the bike are weird. The foot to seat height are long and the seat to bar length is short so the body position is an aggressive lean all the time putting weight over the front. It's too aggressive and leads to arm pump quickly. a 21" front wheel and higher bend bars could help it feel more normal. Unless you have a machine shop moving the pegs would be a major pain in the butt. The rear of the bike would slide all over because all of the weight is on the front end. The battery is above the motor putting a lot of weight up high which does not help turning stability. The dash design is really minimal with only 2 knobs and 5 or 6 lights so there is no way to tell detailed information. This may be available on the phone app but I did not have the opportunity to use it. For the price point you could build a Surron or Talaria into something close (or possibly better) performance wise but not with the build quality, or the suspension quality. For about the same money you could get a Electric Motion Escape R with a clutch. For a thousand or two more could get the Stark Varg which is in a different league. Overall bike is what I would call a "lifestyle" bike that would be good for a street/mild dirt combo that has a very unique look and vibe. Kinda like Ikea meets Apple. Either you totally dig it and are invested or your holding it wrong.. Cudos for Cake for making such a unique bike and its really cool to see so many choices in the ebike/emoto world.

Very nice. Clean looking. However for MX, offroad, dual sport I think that a donor bike and electric conversion is still best route (long term safety). Be it Sur Ron or other ... "electric dual sports/super moto" is scary at high speeds as they are mtb bikes with rocket attached. Converting say a Suzuki DR400SM to electric is very intriguing; you get a platform that is heavier but robust (e.g. Adventure Electric Build). If someone at Luna Cycle or Teznic would take my donor I would love to convert :)

I made 1" tall risers that also moved the bars back 2". Much improved relaxed grip and no arm pressure. The foot peg to seat height for my 33" inseam is nearly perfect and the pads are very solid and stable. As a trail ride / motocross your off the seat most times, the footing is excellent. I bought it for commuting, seat is a bit firm and I have some ideas to improve it. Yes it has a unique look, I am a big fan of function over form. I bought it for the quality components, suspension alone is top notch. Yes you can buy a less expensive bike but over time when you have replaced parts due to breakage or improvement, what have you invested? I expect many trouble free miles, 110 so far and not even a loose spoke.

@@scrutch666 Yes all in all. I made up 4"x6"x1" thick neoprene pads where my knees land. With these pads I can squeeze or press with my knee for better control. Combined with the spacer and back set of the bars I am much more comfortable and confident. I will be working on the seat padding over the winter. I understand your concern for the controller position. Thought of it myself. What is exposed is the heatsink and is of substantial thickness. The box is an extrusion. My impression is it could withstand a hard hit from a large stone. I believe it serves as a heat sink and covering it with anything would be a bad idea. I did toy with the idea of adding a finned heatsink to both increase heat capacity and protection. As I ride almost entirely on paved roads I am not too concerned of damage but i have yet to ride in our typical 90F and 90% RH summers. You really should try one out. The small bit of trail riding I did was wonderful, the sound does not frighten them.

@@UncleBman i know its such a typical question and i know the range is limited but how was your experience so far? I imagined taking it out with my truck to some nice trails and have some fun and explore. I probably would be mostly in power mode 2. Man this range anxiety.
@UncleBman
@UncleBman 3 жыл бұрын
@@scrutch666 Range anxiety, oh yes. My first trip I left the house on 85% battery. My commute is 34 miles round trip. I ran out on the return leg about 3miles short. Mind you that was on setting 3 and 35 - 45 mph, hard launches in 90F weather about 270ft in total elevation change. I now carry my charger and charge at work. I will say that is my one complaint and I need to discuss in detail with the dealer. I am disappointed in the display, hard to read the speed and a four bar graph for power is just not cutting it. One can buy a less than $500 scooter that has a free app that can tell you everything about the battery condition down to individual cells. Really no excuse to not have that, I expect it is something to come soon. You really should sign up for the test ride! That being said I see constant improvements on the bikes and they are open to suggestions and welcome feed back, very helpful with questions.

@@UncleBman yeah i requested one but right now they cant do one due covid. I live in seattle. But they have a 5 day return policy now if you dont like it. And yeah i agree that having such limited access to information i just a bad design choice. I guess the simplicity philosophy went here to far.

I tried one here in California at one of their demo days. It struggled to go from a dead stop up a steep hill. It was fun to ride in the flat spots but totally impractical IMO. KTM still has the best bike of the electrics for now.

The specs and power are solid. But man the price is to steep and I cant stop thinking how ugly it is. Having experience with these 4 bikes The drill one def better choice if not interested in surron or talaria. But will be hard to match the price. Many are going to find that surron and talaria need upgrades for more experienced riders but the drill one is very powerfull and strong. Just my opinion.

Seems like you're riding pretty hard, but you don't sound exhausted. Like if the bike isn't making you fight it at all. If it wasn't for the price I'd be all over getting one. Maybe one day. The price of the segway dirt bike is just so much more affordable. It's almost half the cost, but maybe this is worth it. Maybe I'll just save some money a bit longer. Definitely don't think I'd ever buy a used electric bike or car.

Yeah they are out of their mind roughly $1000 per hp. Best of luck to the Cake Cock machine or whatever it is called, but they don't make drugs good enough here in the USA to get me to buy one.
