On The Dale Jr. Download, Dale and Denny Hamlin discuss the state of the charter system in NASCAR and the pros and cons of starting a team in the Cup Series. If the sport expands to a higher number of charters, how much should a new team pay?

Denny's arguing for what benefits Denny right now. When he says "All well managed teams deserve to run for a championship & make a modest profit," that is not the way anything works in the real world. The Dallas Cowboys are well managed, but they do not deserve to sniff the cleats of champions. Denny makes a good argument for the owners, but you can see him pull up on several topics.

I’ve quite an off and on love hate relationship with Denny over the years. I have played devils advocate for him a couple of times but he has also pissed me off in the past as well. I think he actually had a better attitude until about the mid 2010s. While I may not be his biggest fan I actually do like 23XI. As a fan of both Busch brothers I did enjoy that Kansas race.

1) the line “sometimes the talent stays on the sideline because the team has to stay in business” applies to almost ever type of developmental system. It definitely applies to every sport. Little Jonny is a talented ball player, but his parent can’t afford equipment or the travel team or whatever, so he doesn’t play. I mean, I feel like that line applies so much more to racing, because racing is outrageously expensive to begin with. 2) the charter system may ultimately be the thing that kills NASCAR, hate to say it. Part of what helped NASCAR, at least in my opinion, grow was the fact that you could show up to any track any week with a car, and as long as you passed tech and qualified, you had a chance to race for the same prize money everyone else did. Today, you show up to the track, and you’re racing for pennies on the dollar. It’s unsustainable 3) pains me to say this, but if JRM joins cup, it’s gonna hurt their entire operation. You have to believe that they take a full advantage of the information and resources provided by that Hendrick funding. If JRM joins cup, Hendrick has to divest, and I see it hurting not only the cup stuff, but the affinity stuff as well

To me it's a simple fix. Cap the field at the absolute highest number feasible. Growing up in the late 90s to 2000s that number was 43 cars. the purse money will always have 43 cars in mind. If 50 cars show up then the slowest 7 go home. If 40 show up then the purse for 41,42,43 is kept by Nascar for maybe another expense or purse. Now regarding the 36 charter teams. They should get bonus money from Nascar at the end of the year that distrutes all profits from the season to the teams. Obviously non charter teams don't receive this money. I also believe Nascar drivers should have a salary cap like other sports. It'll help with team costs and sponsor costs.
@jamesdb7115
@jamesdb7115 2 жыл бұрын
From what I understand that salary cap is what this next gen is, as they can't modify any of the parts. It's probably not THEE salary cap. I'd go with salary caps with driver pay too (and if that's what you're referring to. I apologize). You have 4 drivers, you can't have the dream team of what Hendrick (Kahne, JG, JJ, Jr) or Rousch (Kennseth, Biff, Edwards) or Gibbs currently has. Those drivers get to a) go to their own team (Hamlin) or force to sign elsewhere. Just spit balling here.

I know Dale and Denny are good friends and it was Dale who had discovered him and brought him to his first NASCAR even at Daytona back in the early 2000's. Maybe with Denny's push to help these teams succeed (Eric Estepp has had some great videos about what Hamlin's doing on his channel) Dale will move his team into cup. To a point I think Charters ruined everything. You have teams that want to expand from 2 to 3 or 4 cars and you have new teams that want to come into the Cup series. They won't though, because the charters, you have to pay 10-12 million dollars for a charter, if not more, when there's charters available. Sure without the charters people like Chase Elliott may not make the race, due to issues in qualifying, but that's part of racing. Although you can't really get rid of the charters now, because teams spent 10+ million dollars for them.

Big fan of Dale Jr. (and his father before that). But I would rather that the Earnhardts remain focused on the Xfinity teams. Until/unless Hendrick, Childress, Gibbs, or Petty downsizes or quits the Cup series, then it makes no financial sense for the Earnhardts. Yes, new teams have started like Hamlin's, Track House, ect. But as far as I know, those new teams do not currently have any teams in Xfinity. I could always be wrong.😁

drew1212, Dale Jr, and Kelley, have both stated that the Cup series is a huge financial process to enter in order to find success. JRM has done quite well in the Xfinity series as has Dale Jr. Dale Jr did fairly well in the Cup series, but it was funded by others. DEI had a great future until gold-digger greedy Teresa took over. Dale Jr, and Kelley, tried informing her that she was going in the wrong direction, but Teresa cared less about their opinions and business experience. Teresa knew nothing about business ethics, nor cared. With her, it was always about money for herself. She had it all and destroyed it. DEI now no longer exists.

I think there should be 43 cars 36 Starters and 4-7 ( 40-43 ) qualifying to get in every week and the Winner has always got to make $ . No matter what. Even if it’s something like if 1 of those 4-7 Qualifiers happens to finally Win 1 then they get a larger payout, something like that Because Winner has always got to make $ , especially if 1 of those cars somehow pulls that off. They got to make $ just to race for it to even be worth going out to battle for final 4-7 qualifying spots. I think it should be 43 cars. We need more cars out there 44, 45 , even 50 would be dope.

Not a fan of his driving style on the track, but I'm all for the Denny Hamlin owner and what he's doing for the sport. Being one of the veterans in the sport, he's really speaking out for the garage area. We don't see Kevin Harvick (who's become very quiet) or Kyle Busch ( who just seems to be too inmature) stepping up. So Denny is a good veteran presence for these guys.

So essentially the charter system cost them 8 to 10 teams. 45 to 50 showing up to qualify now down to 36... essentially due to selling there souls to FOX and NBC. Theres a lesson about greed in this. Anyways it was good to hear Hamlin acknowledge how many great drivers there are out there running Saturday nights that we will never hear of because of how much racing costs, even at the short track level...yet they found a way to give Danica a ride.

JRM should be in the cup and they need to find away to get in. And get rid of the driver limits like Xfinity! If a team wants more than 4 drivers they should be allowed more it’s their money and if they can afford it they should be allowed more than 4! This will allow some very good drivers stuck in the Xfinity series to move up.

i've been telling teams at a local track that for years but it falls on deaf ears due to the ego's involved . For some reason everyone wants to be a driver /mechanic but never the guy responsible for building a winning car. To me that's where the real satisfaction comes from ....you can put a driver with all the talent in the world in a subpar car and you'll never know how good he could've been but you put a marginal driver in the best car that money can buy and if he's competent at all he will luck into a win ,you put a good driver in good equipment there's more than enough accolades to go around for everybody involved .

@@danielmurphy2164 Wait so it's teams ego's of why they don't shut their team down to join with other teams? What nonsense is that? The driver/mechanic teams are racing, because they want to race, not so they can be a team owner. Me and many people that I race with are exactly that, driver/mechanic/team owners. If I wasn't racing the car, guess what? I'm not putting my money into another team, i'm leaving racing. I put someone else in my 2nd car before, at the end of the year, I didn't care for it and went back to a 1 car team. To you, you may get satisfaction of just being a team owner, but most racing are not. They get satisfaction of actually racing. Same with fans being at the track, 90% of the racers don't give 2 cares if people are in stands watching or not. I went to quite a few races in 2020 and there was no fans or broadcast and a lot of drivers liked it. They didn't have to deal with anyone, they were able to go there and race with no hassle, the whole reason they're there in the first place. We're there to race because we like racing. I'm talking about World Of Outlaw guys and everything, the only thing a lot of them like about fans being at the track is the merch sales.

I don't know if things have changed and maybe a little with the road course additions but I doubt it. Indy is owned by Penske for example now, but unless it's wildly changed since I've stopped paying attention Bruton Smith and Nascar own most tracks.

Get rid of the charters. The whole point of them was so that big teams/drivers were locked into the race and to have something of 'value' to sell if they wanted. The race team itself should be of value. Not the spot on the grid. Go back to guaranteeing the top X number of cars from owners points like it used to be. And stop with the awarding money as a guarantee. If a new team comes in and starts kicking ass, they should earn the race winnings they deserve. Performance doesn't mean anything if the 30th place car earns the same as the winner. As Hamlin said, F1 has the same mentality and the same issue.
@kennyb1472
@kennyb1472 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. The charters keep future owners and small teams from entering and trying to he competitive. Charters are an unnecessary expense for team owners. We KNOW the Hendricks, Gibbs, Trackhouses and the Childresses are making the field. BUT if you wanna look at it strictly from a competitive standpoint, nobody should be locked in and guaranteed to race even with owners points. From a business standpoint, it hurts sponsorships. Imagine if Joey Logano missed a race because he blew a tire in qualifying and crashed. Yea it would bring that entertainment/wow factor to the sport but it ain’t good from a business standpoint. Thats why I believe the top 35 rule should’ve stayed. Plus it would make the Spires, Rick Wares and MBMs actually be competitive instead of qualifying 30th on back and riding around. Plus having charters makes qualifying pointless since we know all 36 or 37 cars are in. Im sure if Chase Elliott started 35th, he could drive his way up and win. Thats why when we had the top 35 rule, teams like Nemco, Tommy Baldwin Racing, and Front Row (before now) were actually forced to be competitive even though they weren’t doing better than mid pack. Getting rid of charters would make teams like Trackhouse, 23XI, RFK, RCR, and Penske be able to afford to field more cars, whether its part time or full time. Plus that would open the door for 43 car fields to return and actually have more cars attempt to qualify. I remember the Daytona 500 would have 50+ cars attempting for 43 spots and have like 15 cars miss the field.
