I thought this was the most enjoyable HR Derby that I have seen in a while!!! I had no complaints

Am I the only one that enjoyed the derby ? I had no complaints and enjoyed the format but all anyone is talking about is how the derby needs to be changed 🤔 there isn’t a single professional sport in the US where the top players want to do silly events like this in their off time. People need to get over that. They play 162 games there’s plenty of time to watch the players then.

I really don’t think there’s any “fixing” needed. It just seems like they change the rules every couple years so maybe just keep it consistent. I really liked this year’s format.

I thought the rules this year were great! What they need to change are those camera angles. They figured it out at the end. Have one BEHIND the batter so we can see launch angles. And the 2ncd on just the outfield area.

Last nights homerun derby was extremely fun and exciting from start to finish! Atleast it was amazing from the view on my couch! It was so fun and I was glued to my tv rooting on my boy Bobby Witt Jr! Congrats teoscar!

Ticket prices were insane, it really restricts access. What crazier to see was there were so many empty seats.

I enjoyed it. I like that the top 4 advance instead of H2H matchups. The only gripe I have is it is on ESPN so I have to pirate it.

Thought the derby was great! Would’ve appreciated a little bit more love for Teo on this ep guys. With the swingoff against bohm and the bombs in the final round, he definitely put on the best show! And the first ever dodger champ as well!

Espn only showing EV + LA a few times was almost as frustrating as the camera focusing on the ball in the air so you couldn’t immediately tell it was a pop up to center.

Secondly as a Cubs fan I hope Imanaga gets the chance to pitch as well. He's been an absolute breath of fresh air on and off the field since he signed. An aside from 2 bad starts he's been so great even though the team as a whole has been awful the past 2 months.

I was at the HR Derby sitting in the upper deck along the third base line. I enjoyed the new format of the first round, but I'll admit the bonus rounds took me out of it, especially since I don't remember the rules for the bonus round were explained heading in, and they were never really mentioned at the park. That said, I had never actually watched a Home Run Derby all the way through. And this was entertaining enough, especially the dramatic finish.

The first round was an absolute bust for me. Once it got into the 1v1 matchups it was hype

Format still needs quite a bit of work. We want to see the homers! Cramming it all into 3 minutes isn’t the way to do it. The lineup didn’t help this year in terms of hype but the players did well. I also don’t care at all about who faces who. Trevor is absolutely right.

So you guys are saying the Derby started off slow, dragged through the middle, but had a couple of nice moments and then came through in the clutch? That kind of sounds like it describes all of the batters that went far in the comp. :) I think they should get pitching machines out there, and then just feed the guys a pre-programmed set of pitches. 5 curveballs (4 corners of the zone, and dead center) 5 change ups, 5 fastballs, and then the money ball round, 5 batter's choice of location, speed, and pitch type, and those 5 are worth double. You kind of turn it into the 3-point competition in the NBA.

Well, Rose was close about a Seager pinch hit homerun to put the AL up. The ball died at the warning track. Then, for the lead, Duran proceeded to demolish that baseball.

One change they should consider for next year: don't count both time and pitches, just pick one. If the goal is for everyone to face the same number of pitches, just count that. If the goal is for the round to be over in a certain time frame, just count that. With both, some of the pitchers were rushing and couldn't throw strikes (Jauss to Alonso) and others didn't throw frequently enough and had balls left over (Teoscar in first round). It's an easy thing to simplify

I would like to see a pitching machine so everyone gets the same pitches in the same time and then bring in the ten outs. Winner gets money with a charity match. And the drama has to be built up in the season, think Sosa and Maguire. Maybe only the top 10 HR leaders get invited.

I loved this derby compared to years past. The only problem that we have is that myth that it messes with your swing. We have to stop with that and more guys have to sign up a la Mike Trout.

The derby seems to be lacking on the number of home runs. Multiple people in the first round couldn’t even get 20. In an event that is based around crushing balls into the stands for the fans it was a bad performance. Idk if it was the park or if they needed to bring in more sluggers but something needs to be better. The format is ok but could be better. I’d prefer the 9 outs with no time limit or just a 3 minute timer with no ball limit so if they need to rapid fire near the end of the timer they can

Like others, I had the most fun watching the derby I had in years. I think the new mixed format is great.

We also need to acknowledge that all these players now have home run power, more than ever before. It is a launch angle contest! If we use outs rather than time, it is also less dependent on the pitcher and more dependent on swing decision

Top 4 home run leaders from each league get in. Longest home run from each league gets in making your 10 participants. Also have within the derby a separate 10-15 pitch competition for longest home run of the night with players who simply hit tanks that compete who may not be all stars… maybe even let them use -5 college bats from 2003 (z2k, redline)

The derby was fun, but I agree it's gotten a bit stale. I agree with Trev on Skenes, the Judge matchup isn't as interesting as some of the other matchups.

I honestly enjoyed it, like the format updates, and the guys seemed to have a good time. Only issue is that it took 3 hours. I think if we can get through the first rounds quicker and not draw out with extra reintroductions it'll be good as is.

The last one Witt got a hold of looked like it should have gone over, but if you look at the ball it looks like he ripped the cover off of it.

I think the Derby is a dream at a ballpark; to get to host the ASG and HR Derby, even if either event is a runaway, has gotta be a thrill, maybe three chances in your lifetime if you are lucky. On TV, the event was pretty good. Definitely a little long in the tooth, though what else will you really watch, imo? I think once Bohm hit, everyone got an understanding of the rules and it flowed well. Plus, it was close, with the exception of Gunnar and Alonso. That made it enticing, imo. I think we all just fixate on the past, like McGwire and Sosa and Abreu and Hamilton, and thats fine, they were thrilling events. But i argue that those entire sessions were long in the tooth and had dull moments as well. Lets not focus on the pockets and let the game play itself out

Answer: Yes. Yes they do need to fix it. Go back to the old format and keep some aspects of the new. They get 10 outs. They have 30 pitches. Every 3 pitches taken=1 out. Slow it down for the hitters so they can breathe, and so those who are watching it on TV can actually follow the god damn balls.

The format change sucked Either let them hit as many as they can in Three minutes or givem 40 pitches with no clock. The last 10 years with 4 minutes a round were great. Then invite guys who can obliterate balls, i love Josey, But Naylor is the masher but Jose hit 31, his career high in a season is 39. The derby needs change, back to what it was in 2023

They should just get a pitching machine? Consistency of the timing and pitching seems to be the most needed area of improvement.
