Not a trick question, during the opening mission for Halo 2 we actually see the In Amber Clad (the ship that John gets on before going to Delta Halo) catch up with Regret’s carrier. So ODST takes place between that moment and the moment at the end of Halo 2 when Truth’s fleet is wrecking Earth. Actually a little after. So technically it happens concurrently with Halo 2, but the legendary ending cutscene shows Truth on Earth talking to some Engineers about the portal to the Lesser Ark. So that moment is what makes it take place between 2 and 3. As for Halo 3 starting it’s possibly a few hours or days after the end, more likely a few hours. Chief fights his way through the Keyship that he gets on at the end of 2 and almost assassinates Truth but fails and that’s where we pick up. As for how Humanity was so heavily defeated so quickly, this was probably 25% of the Covenant fleet (assuming 50% were Elite-controlled and 50% Brute-controlled, and the Brutes had significant losses). Additionally in Buck’s mission for ODST we see a bunch of dead Elites (fun fact the number of dead Brutes and Elites is even) which signifies the start of the Great Schism. While it’s possible Truth enacted the betrayal before Regret dies, it’s more likely the order came down right as Regret was killed.
