Power Rangers ditching tokusatsu is like Guy Fieri deciding he no longer likes food. The problem isn't the Sentai footage, the problem is writers and producers that don't want to put any effort into making it work.

Power Rangers has always been low-effort, utilizing as many Toei assets as possible and extraordinarily simple plots and characters. In the 90s, toku (at least, how it appears in Sentai rather than Godzilla or similar higher quality productions) was fresh and its total uniqueness drove consumer interest, even leading to copycat brands that tried the same thing. Without freshness, the brand doesn't have much to fall back on, and the style was that freshness from the beginning

Or they could just go back to adapting Sentai WELL like they did in the Disney era. I hated the Neo-Saban era (excluding Dino Charge) as much as the next guy but Sentai WASN'T the problem, the writers' lack of creativity, skill, and refusal to even try to adapt the Sentai in interesting ways that took advantage of their themes and motifs were. (And still ARE, if I'm being extremely honest. Hasbro being so clearly ashamed of Go-Busters' spy and tech theme was so frustrating as someone who was initially really excited to finally have their favorite Sentai adapted)

I don't know if Bugs and insects wouldn't sell well in the west. One of the biggest heroes is Spdier-man, a very clearly bug-themed hero. Then Again I guess that's more selling a character based on the insect rather than making toys of the bug itself 🤔

Bug toys or media are always something that sells well if it's cool enough. Despite it being a near 2 decades or so now since companies frequently pumped out bug based toys and tv shows that doesn't mean there isn't a market for that thing anymore in "the west", just that there's no supply for the kids that are fascinated with bugs. Like there's bug toys for sure still and they sell but they're nowhere near as elaborate as the stuff from the 80s through the 2000s. I don't know where the heck the take that kids liking bugs is a "japan only" thing came from but it becomes really clear how incredibly stupid it is if you actually go to any kind of museum or zoo with a bug section lmao.

I tend to count the moment people start calling source material of stuff that involves japan in some way production wise as "too Japanese" as a red flag lmao. Power ranger's origin and the trend it started is really odd because somehow the media suddenly thought american audiences wouldn't understand tokusatsu stuff despite ultraman and godzilla both being really popular for a good few decades at that point and having basically near direct translation dubs. (save for the first godzilla movie that added extra scenes with news commentator narration that wasn't in the original.)

Just a heads up, but some parts of Japanese culture will be considered cool in the west (samurai, ninjas, some of the yokai/demons etc.) and other parts will not click with western audiences at all (the love for insects in the context of sentai or obsession with trains). It's absolutely possible for some franchises to be 'too Japanese' while at the same time some other franchise, heavily drawing from Japanese culture, to be extremely popular.

(LONG POST ALERT) Here's my stance on the matter. There’s a big difference between Power Rangers abandoning Sentai/stock footage and abandoning tokusatsu. If it abandons the tokusatsu feel, it'll lose what made the franchise so much fun to begin with. The 2017 reboot film didn't have any tokusatsu feel and that's partially why it bombed. It didn't _feel_ anything like what Power Rangers was all about. It just felt like a haphazard MCU wannabe. I think the idea of adapting Sentai seasons could be phased out. They could just make their own stories using original suits or a hodgepodge of all Toei's old suits, or a mix of the two. Take a route similar to Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight. Previously I’ve said I’ve wanted to see certain seasons like Zyuohger, Kiramager, & King-Ohger get adapted, but I didn’t really mean “adapted". I moreso meant presence in Power Rangers in some way. Like, maybe the suits for Kiramager could appear somehow, or the mecha from King-Ohger, or the villains from Zyuohger - see what I mean? If Hasbro gave each show the budget of the average Sentai or Kamen Rider season, they could do a lot more. I also think that Power Rangers needs to appeal to more than just one demographic. It needs to tackle all age groups. There could be movies and shows, animated or live action, for various age demographics, like kids, tweens, teens, young adults, etc. I'm also open to animated Power Rangers so long as they don't get rid of live action Power Rangers content, because if Power Rangers were animated from the start, back when it debuted on Fox Kids, it wouldn’t have stood out. It would feel like a generic superhero show to a lot of kids and they’d just keep watching the X-Men cartoon instead. The show doesn’t need to be annual anymore either. Maybe instead of doing “seasons” of one show, you do multiple shows, and each one is treated as its own thing, while maybe set in the same canon, don’t treat it as a season of a show but rather a show in a universe. And don’t be afraid to do it with the level of maturity that Time Force or RPM had. Kids could watch and enjoy it but it can also be watched and enjoyed easily by older fans. So, does Power Rangers need to abandon Sentai? Maybe. But should it abandon the tokusatsu feel that made it stand out from most other superhero franchises? Absolutely not. That'd be like Batman if they took out the dark and gritty tone, it just rarely works anymore. Look, I love Power Rangers, and I want to see it succeed, but people are arguing left and right about what Hasbro should do, or if they’re making the right moves. Hell, there was hardly any development on the cinematic reboot between its announcement and the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes. Couple in the new Hasbro CEO treating the brand (as well as other Hasbro brands) like garbage, and I can see why a lot of people are worried. But nothing can kill a franchise that’s been around for 30+ years - or at least not permanently. Remember the gap between Kamen Rider Black RX & Kamen Rider Kuuga? Well, that’s all I gotta say. What do you think?

I think Power Rangers should be half original, and half sentai stuff. Just until Hasbro is ready to “leave the nest“ of sentai adaptations. for those who say that Hasbro should just do this immediately, I will say this. Hasbro, make these last few moments count, and let’s just let Hasbro take as long as they need to with the sentai adaptations. I really hope that cosmic fury opens the doors for fan adaptation inspiration. Speaking of which, my fan adaptations of the skipped seasons of sentai: ToQger, Zyuohger, fan adaptation of Kyuranger that drops the original suits, even though they look pretty decent for a first start by Hasbro in my opinion, Zenkaiger, and King-Ohger. I’m skipping Dan brothers because to me, it wasn’t that interesting.

I think the important thing Power Rangers should ditch is SHAME and this tendency to underestimate their audience. They should just DO Power Rangers, enjoy themselves and celebrate itself at every turn. There's this overwhelming feeling with Power Rangers is that they need to justify themselves at every corner, justify themselves to 'concerned parents' with heavyhanded morals, and trying to justify their legacy as grand and important, and justify their new products with SO MUCH NOSTALGIA. They're always going 'We were big in the 90s you know!' instead of trying to be big NOW. They just don't embrace their own tropes the same way tokusatsu shows do. Power Rangers would never have given us an Akibaranger. They wouldn't give us Zenkaiger. You can ditch Super Sentai without ditching tokusatsu and PR's identity to try to chase trend instead of standing out. At best, they need to take cues from Gridman/Dynazeon and have animated tokusatsu. Every monster in SSSS Gridman still looks like they could be a dude in a suit, ya know?
@FireStormDel
@FireStormDel 11 ай бұрын
They probably wouldn't Zenkaiger as is because a good amount of the fights have comedy that you either cut or reshoot to get around, or keep whilst embracing the silly, either way you do it, no one is happy. But you could use the Zenkaiger hero suits, and the Donbrothers monsters whose Sentai basis had a Power Rangers adaptation and maybe a few pre-Zyu ones, and you make an original show from that, since making a quick idea with that, I'd have Zenkaiger, Twokaiser, and Staceaser be the only human-sized Rangers while Zyuran, Gaon, Magine, and Vroon are giants unable to shrink down, but act as the Zords instead, with their Zenkai-Oh forms coming later on. Plus, I'd establish Power Ranger version of Goranger and Battle Fever J to help explain why Zenkaiger and Staceaser look the way they do as being inspired by them and being the sons of the Red Rangers of those teams.

I half agree on the challenge to appeal to US kids. Growing up with Marvel and Star Wars. But at the same time, Henry Danger was a superhero sitcom show that was always on Nickelodeon the same time Power Rangers was. And that show had a far cheaper budget than Power Rangers has. Yet that was more popular. Also helped it was a Nick original, so they promoted that more than PR which they just licensed to be on their channel. So I don't think kids ultimately care about how a superhero show looks. They just want to be entertained.

The train problem is companies refusing to have trains be cool. Look at how Mattel treated Thomas the Tank Engine during the Big World Big Adventures and the recent reboot of the show. Where prior to Big World Big Adventures, the stories were centered on the characters who were trains being trains. With Big World Big Adventures, there were dream sequences where the characters pretended to be superheroes or others things like an elephant. Back when Toys R Us was all over the country, several isles of the store were dedicated to Thomas and Friends Wooden Railway alone. Everyone was furious at Mattel about the announcement of the Thomas and Friends reboot due to it abandoning realism completely and reducing the show to a Paw Patrol copy with Looney Tunes lunacy. If we want more people to be interested in trains, we need a good entry point for kids to get into trains and Thomas used to function as that entry point with the Railway Series and early seasons of the show. I doubt that the reboot will be able to serve that function. Without kids who are passionate about trains that grow up to care about steam preservation, people will care less and less about trains with the exception being the Flying Scotsman, the first steam locomotive to officially reach 100 miles per hour. Also, America’s infrastructure requires cars in order to get anywhere. The only locations where trains are easily accessible are in major city centers like New York and Salt Lake City. Public transit in general is a major issue.

I don't know about you but as a kid I friggin' LOVED those wooden train set display tables they had in toys stores and always wished to have a set, well into childhood even. That said, I love ToQger but those mecha toys did NOT look good so I'm not super miffed about them being skipped, I know they wouldn't sell as well. And I bet the suits wouldbe a hard sell too. That said, if I was adapting it I would have made it so the Rangers actually fight in a land of Dream and protect the world from Nightmares. They would enter people's dream to fight and probably have the monster of the day based on a traumatic event of the day that they have to resolve in real life to weaken the monster or something (The traditional formula for Sentai is that you lose the first engagement, learn from it, and return stronger). Heck, you could keep the kid as ranger aspect by doing this.

I mean, there's a lot of issues with Power Rangers. Attempts to bank on nostalgia, while still making something almost completely new (IE, the Power Rangers Movie) failed because, as you said, they really didn't know the assignment. And part of the problem is, that extended to the toys as well. Absurdly complicated designs, that didn't translate well to toys. What bugs me though, is the way Cosmic Fury is playing out. I get it when people are saying that many of the themes that pop up in Sentai wouldn't work. The problem is... the show they're taking the mechs from... is not very Japanese. In fact, it's very international. It's theme is literally SPACE. Space sells regardless of what country you're in. Don't tell me I'm wrong, because you know that would be a lie. They could have made it something big, but because they wanted to make it super original, and they had to make it a crammed in continuation of Dino Fury, they've kinda missed the chance to do one final proper Sentai adaptation... and do it right. In fact... I would have said that, with clever use of story writing, and a little new material with support from Toei... they could have made A LOT out of Cosmic Fury. Heck, they could have made a lot out of Dino Fury if they applied the same logic (and uh... did a bit more work to ensure the toys didn't break - seriously, Hasbro, you know how to make connectors that don't break, you've been doing it for YEARS). But they didn't. Speaking of King-Ohger, while yes, bugs don't sell nearly as well to kids, fantasy does. Magic. The fantastical. King-Ohger could absolutely work, but it requires them to actually commit to doing some work to make it interesting for an American audience. And they just don't want to do that. They want Toei to hand them an idea on a plate that they can do as little as possible with and then sell *that* to kids.

As a Transformers fans, we know that reinvention is what keeps the franchise alive and Power Rangers has been spinning wheels for a very long time. It's ridiculous that it's existence is predicated on what another show is doing in a foreign country. Ninja Steel is a great example of this, it had bad designs for the mecha and a theme that barely appealed to Japan, let alone the west and both over here and Japan it did poorly but it was one of the few Sentai adaptations we had available so we didn't have little choice. We should be capable of making our own show but, as you said, when we do make (mostly) our own show like Cosmic Fury, it has to be 10 episodes long otherwise it's too expensive. Ditching the sentai footage is the wrong take-away. Instead they should be improving the writing, making it feel less like the kids watching it are being written down to. Saying that a sentai is unadaptable just sounds defeatist at best, and lazy at worst. Case in point: Gingaman become Lost Galaxy, a very nature/spiritual heavy season becoming a space opera with hints of Star Trek. Or hell, while the execution fell a bit flat, they were still able to use a bunch of yokai in Ninja Steel, and yokai are as Japanese as they come. While I agree that trains might be a tough order, I think even they could have a place if the writing around them is interesting enough (and the toy line gimmick is handled properly)

The problem is that if you change too much it stops feeling like the Power Rangers brand. I stopped watching Enterprise because it didn't feel like I was watching a Star Trek show, in ways The Orville can't replace. It didn't feel like the same universe. Change too much and it stops being Power Rangers and just seems to be a namesake for marketing purposes. With Transformers there were other stories set away from the regular cast even before the fanfics showed up. However, there were still basic aspects of the brand that stayed in place. My lack of interest in EarthSpark comes from not seeing those aspects either, and it just feels like a show about transforming robots that's at best better made than the Tobot shows on KZfaq. Change is fine and they could do interesting things on their own (though having to work with the Sentai footage does provide an interesting challenge I like seeing them work around and not straight-up adapt), but some of his comments, like complaining about the rubber suits and stuff, reminded me of what a certain BBC higher-up said about the original Doctor Who before it was canceled. I'm not so much angry as I am confused and concerned they'll change too much and it will stop feeling like Power Rangers. Change is good, but only when the change itself is good.

One thing I never hear is people talking about the problems modern power rangers has with production, Adr and direction. The overall lower budget has resulted in a lot of poor direction (particularly for voice actors) and the adr/sound effects are just so badly handled. The show screams no money

I almost want to see the figures dip into the different soldiers of Lord Drakkon. The Red Ranger with a medieval cloak- kind of militarize them and have the black bull Ranger be a hulk size character. Get a blue ranger with a sniper rifle and a hood, really specialize each character.

It's been clear for years that Super Sentai and Power Rangers have been going in different directions. I think that when Hasbro brought it they always intended to break it off and make it a more independent franchise seeing the interesting directions the Boom studios comics are going with Power Rangers when they're not forced to use sentai footage. This also gives Toei more freedom to make Super Sentai more unique and focus more on their market without haveing to worry about if it can be remade into a Power Rangers season. So at this point they have to split up in order to keep both franchises going. Like I said I'm betting Hasbro has wanted to do this since the they brought it but I'm pretty sure that things like the pandanmic and Hasbro's CEO passing away slowed things down.

Simple solution, make Power Rangers gritter, more realistic, and get rid of the cheap looking spandex and give them real armor, make the fights more realistic. Stop using any of the stock footage. There was a fan film of the rangers that made it's rounds among the youtubes. Not saying go that dark, but use that style. Have a villain that we hate to love to hate.

I feel like there's a difference between "ditching Tokusatsu" and "ditching the Japanese footage." Tokusatsu is a genre. I wouldn't be opposed to an animated series, and I think some cool designs could come of it, but I don't like the idea of JUST doing MMPR. Part of the fun of PR/SS is legacy, so an animated sequel to MMPR where the designs are similar, but you can have legacy characters pop in for an episode to mentor the team. Trini's kid is the new yellow; make it her team of younger rangers that've inherited the powers. But, yo, you make me a cool, original robot, and you can do whatever you want with the franchise in my book. You're right, I'm not gonna watch it.

I commented on a FB fan page post with this exact opinion and got insulted for having that opinion. I love the live action aspect of PR/Sentai/Roku. But PR is an American show and they have to aim for the general audience as well as the long time fans for it to continue. Maybe a mix of live action shows and animation can work. But some change is necessary to a 30 year old show to continue

Celebrating a non-Transformers video as always. Would have been nice to get something for Kaixa Day, but I'll take what I can get. To respond to the central question of the video, and I may restate certain things that were said in the video, it's definitely one that will get a lot of different answers. The most pressing thing on my mind is that it feels like we're on the cusp of a big change. Power Rangers has been changing things up since Hasbro obtained the IP, a lot of them for the better, a handful for the worse. So Power Rangers is open to big changes at the moment. A big reason why Power Rangers has stayed the same is because Sentai has stayed the same. For the most part, it's the same tropes in both year after year. But lately, Sentai has been changing things up a lot, and that's been great for Sentai. However, it creates the possibility that these newer Sentai seasons are "less adaptable" for Power Rangers. This leaves Power Rangers with two options if it wants to continue. Option 1, the more unique Sentai will force Power Rangers to change up its formula and embrace a more dynamic structure, or Option 2, Power Rangers abandons Sentai altogether and creates its own unique seasons, which opens the floodgates to a lot of potential new creative decisions, which could be good or bad. There's one thing that concerns me greatly. Power Rangers action figures, from the early years, have always had this consistent look of the male Rangers being big and buff, and the female Rangers being paper-thin and busty. It's like they're trying to mimic the look of comic book heroes. And now that original suits are being made for Cosmic Fury, it seems as if an effort is being made to give the suits that kind of look. It seems like often times, when Power Rangers is allowed to deviate from its source, it tries to become comic book superheroes, and that scares me to death, that they may trend in that direction. Personally, I feel like that's not in line with the identity of Power Rangers. I'm open to reinventing the franchise, and embracing new sensibilities, but I feel like this direction is something I would greatly disagree with. Power Rangers AREN'T comic book heroes, and I feel as if it would be reductive to the identity of Power Rangers if they were turned into that.

From a perspective from someone outside looking in, It could work. You could remove the element of the monster part and have the rangers fight something else like evil knights or other people in spandex. Maybe rangers of that year or years are human sized zoids that fight normal criminals. I think straying so far away from the orginal idea could also be a negative thing for the franchise.

I think the fundamental problem with the idea that Power Rangers must continue to be toku is that toku simply is no longer trendy among kid-oriented media. Doing something original within Toku, or increasing the writing quality for an audience that probably cannot entirely appreciate it is not going to bring back the golden age when a million Power Ranger copycats existed because the market suddenly decided toku was fresh and interesting

Power Rangers could go away for now and maybe stir interest again by having a new show, whether Sentai-adaptation or fully original, or just have the series be continued with movies every few years. But with movies, you either once again reimagine Mighty Morphin, which would sell but annoy fans because it's Mighty Morphin, or make a team with wholly original Ranger suits, Zords, and villains, which would get interest because it's something new and original while familiar, but would have a fair chance of failing because of that, since if it's not MMPR, the general audience wouldn't care.

Power Rangers without tokusatsu is like Transformers without transformation. You’ll end up with something like the Action Masters- well designed action figures with fun converting vehicles, but they’ve sacrificed what makes the franchise itself. To strip the Rangers of their toku roots will sink the franchise… then again, with Hasbro’s garbage quality control and comical prices, perhaps it’s for the best.

@Sleesus
@Sleesus 11 ай бұрын
Action Masters aren't an accurate comparison because of ther entire concept still beign the same as normal Transformers. As you pointed out, they had vehicles that transformed, but you forgot to bring up the fact they also had smaller robots that transformed into weapons and tools for the Action Masters. The whole thing with Action Masters was that they were still "Transformers" but the focus was on the things they came with transforming instead of the main robot. Towards the end of Action Masters they also started working in transformations for the robots themselves IIRC but I do not think Hasbro will ever take the risk of making something like Action Masters again. If they ever did, the quality control and price thing would hurt the line greatly. Ditching Tokusatsu would be less an "action masters" situation and more akin to if you took a VHS of transformers and overwrote some other unrelated media onto it and then tried reselling it on ebay as a "rare misprint transformers VHS!"

I don't mind going original for older audiences. I just wish Hasbro had more confidence in the brand to 2 shows. Sentai adaptations are for kids while the wholly original stuff is for the mainstream crowd.

It's a hard pill for me to swallow for sure, but I admit you and Simon Bennett make some good points. I do think the series could be left mostly unchanged. The biggest adjustment, I think, would be switching gears to frequently reimagining MMPR after 30 years of following the Sentai formula of rebooting the show ever year or two, but between the toy sales and the comic books, it's clear that Mighty Morphin', for better or worse, is THE Power Rangers series. How I see it, they could keep the Zords, full-body suits and unified team look. The core aesthetics and concepts can be maintained. That, I personally think, is a major part of Power Rangers' identity in contrast to Marvel and DC. They could, however, give the suits more armour to further differentiate the Rangers in appearance from each other. I've also been in favour of making Power Rangers animated by default for quite some time now. So I think it could work. My main draw is not wanting Power Rangers to become the Avengers.

i think we need to be careful with with that implication with oh marvel style stuff sold good so clearly we need to MCUify Power Rangers. No, that'll seal the the franchises fate for good, Marvel is on its way out for being the big thing people are tired of it, so trying to ride its coat tails now is far too late and it was lame back then too to ape it. I would still go in a comic book style approach, but more akin to animated DC and Ben 10. That'd be the best fit, IMO.
