The head of the British Army, General Sir Patrick Sanders, has cautioned that the British public might be summoned to participate in the event of a war with Russia, given that the military is "too small". He emphasised the importance for the government to be ready to "mobilise" citizens if NATO go to war with Russia.
Recently, Ex-Prime Minister Boris Johnson wrote a column supporting conscription and advocating for young people to join up and fight, saying that he "jolly well would".
Henry Riley hears from callers about their stance on potentially being conscripted to fight against Russia:
0:00 Caller Paul say he'd "go on the run if it came to it."
2:05 Caller Kim says we need to increase the armed f.orces, and conscription is the "only way".
5:31 Caller Henry believes there should be "some form of national service" and all immigrants should serve.
9:20 Caller Lewis believes that current anti-conscription sentiment "just shows we don’t have any national pride anymore."

People in their twenties were brought up watching British servicemen die in Iraq because their government lied. Not for self defence, just for an old men’s war of pride and loot. Then they’ve spent the last ten years watching the Tories dismantle any hope of an brighter future in a functioning society. Show them something worth defending, make them believe their service won’t be abused in the service of lies, and then maybe ask the question again.

Tobias Ellwood, Tom Tugendhat, and Ben Wallace have all served in the military. Many of them have seen soldiers die in Iraq or Afghanistan. Tobias Ellwood lost his brother in Afghanistan. So the notion that British politicians are only willing to send others to the frontline is false. You just want to pretend British politicians are too cowardly to serve in the military because it gives you an excuse to be a coward as well. You only get freedom and security by defending it.

Personally, I think that the reluctance to be conscripted into military service is not because of a lack of national pride, rather because the younger generations have a great deal of objections over being sent into wars that they don't want to be part of. In Swiss, where I'm from, military service is also mandatory, but generally speaking there aren't any objection to it (many of us in fact voted to keep the draft) because we understand that our service is geared toward self-defense and the protection of our own territories, as opposed to involvements in foreign wars. When we do get involved abroad (which we do quite often) it is more to act as technical and logistical support or protective detail. It's easier for someone to feel pride in one's service when they know they're not gonna be asked to fight in a cause that may contradict with their own values, or something they don't believe in.

Meet a Russian, they're generally sound people. It's the governments fight, put them in the ring should they wish to end this in that way. I have a life to uphold, a family to support. Why should I jeopardise my existence, and the financial status of my family for a fight that I had no say, no decision and no vote in. I don't like the idea of them forcing us to risk our lives against our will especially when we're supposed to represent democracy and freedom. I will fight for what I believe in, I would fight voluntarily in any situation for my family but I will not fight so rich people I don't know can power grab on the world stage, in hopes to having the 'highest economy', or 'authoritive status' over another nation. We are in 2024, and the emount of money, economical resources, time and production that gets put into all nations military seems primitive when by now we should be in the very future the people before us predicted. Imagine our infrastructure, our health sectors, the money that could be added into curing life threatening diseases that we still in 2024 know near nothing about. They can spend millions on a tank but not 7k a year for a homeless persons rent in a flat, they can spend millions on a plane but will still try and force my physically disabled father to work, they can spend billions on an aircraft carrier but still our health sector is crumbling. We don't have an imperial income anymore, we cannot afford a world war, our people will suffer the consequences of severe inflation and death whether in battle or not and the aftermath would put our nation & the rest of europe in bankruptcy & most likely in debt to the likes of America again for many years to come. I object to war in 2024, I object to spending on any armed forces, I object to forced loss of life.

Absolutely not. I'm a serving soldier and I think conscription is ridiculous. For one reason, I don't want to have to rely on someone that doesn't want to be there. And another, war fighting is incredibly specialised these days. Training takes a long time and considerable resources. Chucking people on the front line before they're ready would mean the med chain gets overwhelmed, and would negatively affect morale.

John gave a perfectly well reasoned argument, mentioning Finland (I'm a Finnish citizen, as well as British) but having served in the British Army, I was not only excused but discouraged from doing Finnish National Service. I think at the time an ex NATO soldier in the Finnish army was not regarded as ideal. It was cold war times. John makes fair points. As a former soldier, I needed to rely on the blokes beside me and the people behind me, in a role which required a fair amount of technical skill. I wouldn't want a reluctant conscript anywhere near me, but John who knows a bit about Finland, suggested that people reluctant to do National Service do an alternative, usually working in socially useful things. My Finnish relatives all did NS. 2 went on to the professional cadre of senior NCOs. Also, Finnish men who leave school with no qualifications, rare, but it happens, are taught, for example, how to get trucks through Finland's swamps and ice, and perform the nationally required service of driving logging trucks as well as military trucks. Fair play to you John.

It would be an error born of ignorance to understand all that serve can be represented by the least intelligent of us for it is a fact the different trades within the armed forces demand different intellectual capacities. And who's to blame for the lack of national pride? Tory government after Tory government imposing austerity, whilst feathering their and their donor cronies nests with preferential contracts and appointments that aren't based on merit or tax payer value. We have councils cutting services across the board whilst simultaneously raising council taxes. The conservatives axed the plans that were put in place to replace schools that would have been nearing the end of their lifetime, but instead chose to kick it further down the line, to a point where many school buildings are unsafe and unfit for purpose. Boris Johnson and his government has already shown their patriotic colours already during the pandemic... Parties, affairs and generally thinking the rules they themselves set and expect the public to follow don't actually apply to them. The thought that he'd be doing anything but sitting deep within a bunker somewhere safe is laughable.

I don't mind defending people even in other countries but once the purpose become unclear, I'm out. Besides any coming war with Russia won't be just about "protecting Europe" it will be about the arctic circle and Russia will most likely attack because they feel their arctic superiority is threatened. We Swedes and Finns are proud of our arctic capabilities, which include our icebreakers, submarines and air-force able to operate in our climate, handing these capabilities over to NATO will provoke Russia, no doubt about it.

The army don’t want conscripts. They want young people to chose to join. And many were when the Tories cut back the army. It’s not small now becuase the young didn’t want to join.. It’s small now because the Tories stopped it recruiting.

Amen. A willing volunteer, well enough paid and equipped, is a far better soldier than any resentful conscript.

No. People are smarter now due to social media and can see through the government's lies.

Who would fight for a flag that would get you arrested by police for flying said flag in that country. Glad people wont serve.

In order for you to have "National Pride" you gotta have something to be proud of. Over the last decade we've had the rise of food banks, the rise of warm banks, party gate, the division of the country through Brexit, Brexit betrayal, the use of Cambridge Analytica. The Post office scandal. Housing shortage crisis, NHS crisis, schooling crisis, prison, policing and military crisis. Seriously, What is "National Pride" nowadays? As for Boris, Anyone who believes him over fighing on the front line, has forgotten all the lies in parliament over partygate. He knows he'll never get called up so they are just words. I've never heard such awful journalism to take a habutual liar at his word and use it agains a caller.

To answer your question, the actor who played Private Godfrey in Dads Army was a conscientious objector who refused to carry a gun. He joined the medic corp, became a stretcher bearer during WW1. For his bravery in objecting he still went to the front line, suffered being shot, shrapnel wounds and other injuries. That to me is bravery. Its serving the country in a way that means doesn't need to carry a gun. Trawlermen were exempt from joining the armed forces yet were at risk from being blown up by enemy navy or, as my great uncle was, by a sea mine. Bravery comes in many forms not only by fighting, killing, etc.

There is nothing brave about fighting or killing. It's nothing to be proud of, therefore it is not brave. It is stupidity.
