"They [Yale] keep five slots open for women. One unofficially for a Wellesley girl." That's the exact quote. Wellesley Women's College. Prestigious school for Women. Women from this college were known to be above reproach. The best of the best. Well trained in academics, modesty, strick religious practices, and a wide swathe of positive attributes. Seeing she had down as her goal of pre-law would show Yale that she that she had her head on straight, and was dedicated to her goals.

My mom was the perfect example of who could do both. Yes, she lacked sleep and was extremely busy raising her kids as well as operate on her patients. My father was the typical dad who could only do well in work but sucked at home and repairs yet doesnt like it when my mom and kids hire someone else to do a better job. We all had to deal w his insecurities and inferiority, that mom would always make time for him to soothe his ego. So mom cooked meals, cleaned the house (we had help but she manages EVERYTHING including budgeting) and worked a lot of clinic and operating hours. It was because of her we were able to afford a better life than most. Esp when dad always had a hard time when it came to dealing w his superiors, so financially, he was ok but if we all relied on him, we wouldnt be able to afford to study in universities outside our towns and wouldnt be able to travel. Even now, my dad cant clean or cook for his life and he doesnt know how to grow his money. He got lucky marrying a woman who was successful and determined yet patient and kind enough to just deal w his crap.

I don’t really consider people doing it all a good thing you shouldn’t do that to yourself you should be able to rely on others. You shouldn’t want to work yourself hard just to say you did. You don’t win life by struggling more then others you win by being happy and fulfilled in all aspects of life.

And they end up doing the housewife thing anyway, well, ya know, after sleeping through half the highschool roster. And today's housewife is not really a housewife anymore. Cleaning and cooking is not a housewife. Back then you would do the finances, manual housework, schooling children after their classes, teaching your children how to live instead of just sending them to school and saying the generic "how was class" everyday. Most had gardens, orchards, cellars etc. Youd be hard pressed to find an actual housewife nowadays. The women are too busy complaining about how unfair life is for them while they collect a check off of OF.

But her husband is not supportive with her needs and wants like when she want to buy something for herself and have her own “me” time. Girls like you and me we learned to be aware of what goes on at home, so we won't make the same mistakes our mothers made. I learned that education even just a HS diploma can help better jobs. I knew this and told my mother I will not quit HS due to my need to make sure to have a decent job with benefits and to buy a car which I did with half of my income which I provided half of what I earned to provide for my mother's family. It is wrong to push young girls to be the financial support only temporary or we won't have a chance to have a life of our own. I learned to take that as law - and eventually moved out at 28 to have that life I should have.

The point that the teacher is trying to make is that it's okay to want marriage but to not have dreams and hopes of your own and just want marriage isnt something normal. You are your own person and your own being, with your own mind and soul. If you want to dedicate your whole life to your kids and your family then that's fine but you can tell that the blonde woman wants more than that you can see it in the way she interacts and talks the teacher. The teachers trying to get her to understand that she can want both and that it's not selfish of her to want both of those things. If you truly want something then go for it don't let things stop you from doing that.

So a woman who doesn't desire anything else but a good marriage, raising children and maintaining the house, isn't normal? You have just insulted millions of women, one of those being my mother. Let women chose for themselves and don't you dare belittle any of them for their choice. It's disgusting and sexist, every person regardless of sex deserves to chose their own path, they should get support for their choice, not pushed towards whatever someone else thinks is the normal thing to do...

Why can't a woman's dreams lie with or revolve around a family, around her children, around being a mother and a wife? Is it wrong if she only dreams of that? I respected the characters decision to marry, but I somewhat agreed with Julia Roberts when she said, and then? Even if being housewife is what you choose, you still have to think about the future. That is to say you have to think about where your family is going to be. How to foster the ambitions of your children when they tell you what they wanna be when they grow up, where you’re going to live, and also what you’ll do with yourself when your children are grown, and should God forbid you outlive your spouse. One thing marriage and law school have in common. They’re both work.

"You could do both" is INSANELY cruel. Both casually puts extra pressure on women. The same thing that happened in India. Personal chef for 16 family members, every meal. Raise the kids. And yet be top of your studies & career isn't easy! Support from family can help. But being a mother itself is hard. Giving exams with it is tough. It's obviously awesome if your in-laws accomodate & husband helps. But it's cruel to want a lady to do two full time jobs! One of a home maker and one of a career. I've seen my single mother through hell taking care of her mother in Alzheihmers (we all lived together); then her job as a professor and managing me, the household. It's NOT easy, even with maid.

Back then, women were told and encouraged ONLY to be house wives and mothers though they wanted both. I was watching a documentary on KZfaq about that time era and women, and in the comment section of that documentary actual women who were adults in that time era commented that they were not happy it was like that then because a lot of them had wanted to work and have families at the same time. But because it was frowned on then they didn’t do that and regretted it. Some women were like ‘yes, we were encouraged to go and get a degree BUT then we were expected after college to let all that education go to waste and just be a wife and mother.’ A lot of those commenters were not happy about that. Woman can do both of them; married and continue education, because she will be a mother, and mother will be a first teacher for her children, so women must be educated…That’s my opinion The teacher knows that she’s clever woman and has a dream to go to college

Hi Cassandra, just wanted to share my experience with the ordinary hair serum. When I first used it following the instructions (a few drops everyday) I didn't see much results either. Then Abbey Yung mentioned in a video how she uses it and I've been doing that since. It's been working really well for me. What I do now is apply it all over my scalp and leave it in overnight, then wash it off next day. ❤ you!

I see in television news young people taking too much risks, to the extent of having their lives at threat, in the name of good for all. But good thing is women seem to have a sense to not involving too much in the rat race. One of the great qualities i admire in good women and adult girls.

What's sad about her storyline was that she felt she had to sacrifice her chance at a career for her family. She definitely Wanted to be married and raise a family, wanted to be there for them and be the home maker, but it was obvious she Also wanted that law degree (even if it wasn't wanted As much). Sure, back then it wasn't as feasible to have both, was even frowned upon by the restrictive traditionalists and conservatives, but she was not taking into account that she wouldn't be needed for Every moment, that her child or children would be at school themselves, giving her opportunities to still move forward. I feel like with her, the movie got stuck on the positive aspect of "feminism means supporting a woman's ability to Choose", and not enough on the bittersweetness of why she felt she had to choose.

This movie is about feminism at its core, the professor, played by Julia Roberts, has a very modern attitude that a woman should be able to work and do what they want (which they should) but she forgets that part of doing whatever a woman wants can include being married and having children- she forgets that having choice is a right and should also include a more traditional way of life if applicable. SPOILER The student decides that she wants to have a family and be married over going to law school because SHE wants to. Even today people forget that feminism is the belief that everyone regardless of gender should have equal opportunities and have the ability to do anything they want. Mona Lisa Smile is a very good movie to watch, I would recommend

@@teresamagnusson no. Since she had not gotten engaged yet she was following the College path to graduate school. The teacher put as much pressure on her to fill out the form as Betty did in encouraging marriage. The teacher was to be married herself. It was only Pearl Harbor and them both changing by the end of the war that had her continue with education instead. If she is allowed to change lanes in life at 20 or 22 why can’t her student? The teacher was not even doing what she wanted to do. At the end they all were. Ginnifer’s character confessed to the boy and they became a couple. The teacher left for Europe to study. Her passion and one she realized every student didn’t have for longer than the prescribed years of education. The married woman got a divorce and may go to grad school. Or will get a job. And this student was married and would have the center hall colonial. This was a privileged bunch of students. Why is the student sleeping the married guy the good one in this? But the married woman being cheated on the bad woman in this? Aren’t the husbands stepping out bad? The student sleeping with the married man is doing so cause her family miserable, so everyone else’s should be. How dare it be hard not to get the pill so I don’t pregnant. For a bunch of seemingly smart and rich people they were as dumb as everyone else. I actually did both but not at the same. I went to college, working during college part time. Then grad school then full time for years until I became a parent and decided to stay home. My husband always was home first when married when both working. We fended for ourselves most the time or had a lot of left overs. It is not rocket science. The students in this film would for the next 12 years proceed to give birth to most entitled anarchic generation in history.

@@teresamagnusson with the teacher. Before she decides to get married. I think it was before the engagement. The person who wants her to go. And she discusses marrying with the married student cause the married person wants her married. But on the porch she speaks truth. 5% of women had college degrees. She will be in this category. Saying she is miserable for not getting a grad school degree is ridiculous. She picked moving onto her next stage of life. Family. Why are so many upset about 70 years ago? Now more women enroll in college than men. Seems a lot of women currently angry.
