Best video on Sonarworks I've seen, thanks. The EQ Wizard followup testing was impressive. I'll be doing this in my studio. FYI, some of that frequency dip on the low mids could be from mix desk reflection, at least it was in my room. Subwoofer crossover is also a good assumption...

Good review man! Thank you! I purchased SonarWorks for my control/live room last year. My room has a lot of treatment, including huge bass traps so I was expecting to find the correction to be somewhat telling. 100% worth the cost! It detected most of the trouble areas I could hear and a lot of what I could not. I use it religiously on my headphones and monitors. And yes, it does “overcorrect” the bass for my ears as well. Takes a little tweaking to get where I wanted it but would recommend SoundID Reference to anyone with a control room.

holy crap thank you so much for doing the post correction measurment. It has baffled me as to why no other reviewer measures their speakers after correcting them, seems like the most obvious thing to do! And yes I was also having the question of what "flat" means to Sonarworks, as they have it written as flat, but describe it as "neutral speaker in a treated room", which wouldnt be flat. I wish they didnt have some hidden curve in the background like this. I am like you, I need more bass energy and rolled off highs for audio to be enjoyable. Great vid, thanks!

This video is one of the best explaining the "how tos" of Sonarworks as well as its nuances. Bravo! Love the A/B testing using REW with Sonarwork's translation as well. One question...what process did you use to calibrate your subs with your near fields? I use one sub. Methods vary on this subject so much that it gets rather confusing. Keep up the fantastic work!

I have just used IK Multimedia's Arc 3 to finish off my new treated mixing room and it's worked really well. I got the treatment the very best I could and it was already sound pretty flat with good stereo imaging. However I did have quite a dip around 100hz and a smaller one around 16khz. Arc 3 tweaked these dips making a noticeable difference to certain bass notes and the very high end without changing much else. What I didn't expect was that it's improved my great stereo imaging and made it even better! I've never heard music like this before, amazing! 😎

How do you feel about the filters? dont know if should mix in zero latency or mixed filter. Worried about the phase issue
@RaytownProductions
@RaytownProductions Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't worry too much about it. Personally I like zero latency for most stuff. I dont think I've ever felt like the image felt phasey when choosing one filter vs the other. The one thing to watch out for is pre ringing from the linear phase filter if you have lots of bass correction!
@AlexLapugean
@AlexLapugean 7 ай бұрын
You should mostly stay away from linear phase and probably even mixed ones. The potential issues with the phase shifts (especially applied to an entire mix) induced by the eq-ing in minimum phase is usually nothing compared with the pre-ringing which tends to muddy the low end and smear out transients, which is on top of that are also the main issues room modes have.

I have a sub connected to my Adam speakers with the crossover activated. If I turn that off during the measurement and then turn it back on after I have applied the correction, wouldn’t that mess with results giving me a wrong frequency responce? I think the manual says to keep it on during.
@RaytownProductions
@RaytownProductions 8 ай бұрын
Yes, in this case with sonarworks, you would keep it on. Other room correction software can tune the sub independently from the monitors - in that case you would leave your crossover off. Hope that helps!
@AlexLapugean
@AlexLapugean 7 ай бұрын
The issue with the crossover is only for the initial speaker position and distance etc. measurement, where you hold the microfone in the front of the speaker. If you just deactivate the crossover then, and then re-apply it when making the actual measurements around the listening spot, there should be no influence, and also you should get no errors as the sub will produce the missing frequencies from the speakers, and can be heard by the microfone.

I tried Sonarwork for my LCD-X, but i think i need to dig more and try out some tweaks, 'cause that flat curve respond is just awful to mix with, very unmusical (or maybe it is just my mixes who are very bad...!?).
@AlexLapugean
@AlexLapugean 7 ай бұрын
If your ears are used to a certain tonal balance caused by your speakers, suddenly changing that ballance - even if for the better, flatter frequency response - will definitely feel strange. But it is something your ears will get used to after sufficient listening sessions, after which the reverse transition will fee just as strange. Regarding the musicality, there are of course certain EQ curves that humans prefere and that can make the sound seem more plesent (smiley curve EQ for example), but if the goal is to properly assess the toonal balance of the mix and identify issues, the "best" sound should not be the goal, but what helps you identify and assess the issues. Of course, on top of that, after plenty of experience, you can change the flat curve to your preference, but you shoud always do that with care, to help you mix better and get the translation you want, nto to make the music sound better on your system.

@@AlexLapugeanYes, you are totally right, and i do 100% agree with you. Since 4 months i've changed couple of things in my room and my template/workflow which hopefully make my mixes sound better. I actually went for the Audeze plugin that they provide and i have to say it is great, even when you just implement it in your media player for music listening purpose (JRiver is really great!). And all this make me think that i still didn't tried AA Sienna, i think i have to give it a try !!! Best regards.

Sonarworks takes a long time to do. I wish they had a quick 3 or 4-point test for when you are just moving gear around and testing positions. By the way, nulls (dips) cannot be fixed with EQ. They can only be fixed with acoustic treatment.
@RaytownProductions
@RaytownProductions 6 ай бұрын
Great point about the room modes! They can also be fixed by changing your listening position, which a lot of people forget about! Thanks for the comment :)

It's great for recording and mastering, but there's literally no way (that I know of) to mix with it on a hybrid setup other than to make all your tracks stereo and put the plug in on every track. They really need to make a mono plug in. Of course if you're mixing ITB, you just throw it on a master bus, but if you have an analog mixer bewtween your interface and your monitors, and you actually want to use your analog gear, that's the only way to do it
@AlexLapugean

There are speakers with internal DSP engines that can run sonnarworks (like Adam Audio A... S series). Those should work in any setup, but of course, you would have to like/own those speakers ...

I'm on the fence about this tech. Especially since I heard Andrew Scheps talk about it. He's not completely against it, but he just repeated something he has said in other contexts before: You need to learn about your speakers and/or headphones, and then the environment becomes a secondary concern. So I'm going to hold off and try to get as familiar as possible with my speakers and cans. Instead of creating one perfect listening environment, I think my goal will be to listen to my stuff in different ones and learn to address the issues from that experience.

That's bs, try SW.If you have some treatment already you'll notice a great improvement.I tried everything vsx, realphones, subpac, and previously owned genelec 8331 with sub and correction.I got a new pair of speakers which I use with SW and together with acoustic treatment you can nail the low end which is what causes more problems.Ofc you have to know your monitoring system, but you rather to do it the easy or the hard way? Remember that Scheps has been doing it for ages so he is very familiar with his monitoring system and his headphones( I think Sony MDR?).And plus he worked in excellent rooms, so he knows how to adjust for his less than perfect room.Most of us don't, and acoustic treatment in the primary reflections and SW will give you a moderately accurate monitoring system, and then when your familiar enough maybe you can turn it off. All the best. P.S.- SW also works very well with my hd600/650.

Scheps has golden ears so can easily learn his room and speakers. Most of us don't. Sonarworks is good stuff, especially if you properly treat your room first.

It should be obvious that if you are used to the frequency response of your headphones, and know how good mixes sound on them, all of the sudden eq-ing them (regardless of what the eq does), will distort the results, as you are not used to it. It's like geting your eyes used to how the world looks like in yellow tinted glasses, and then haking them off and state that the world looks wierd. That is a really wrong and pointless test, doesn't mean sonnarworks doesn't do what they way or is not doing a good thing. You really need to do a lot of re-training in this case so the ears can adjust again with how everything sounds under new ballance. Not to mention that for headphones also, you can adjust the target curve and the dry/wat value to fit your preferance.
@Wizardofvoz2

If I have to “learn” a whole new eq profile….whats the point?
@AlexLapugean
@AlexLapugean 7 ай бұрын
@@Wizardofvoz2 What is the point to then buy new speakers also? You'll have to get used to them anyway right? That is exactly the point. To get used to a neutral profile that helps you always get the same results, and accross multiple devices/listening environments. Then for example, when you get new headphones, you will apply the correction and the tonal ballance will be pretty much the same with the old ones. Right now, any new headphone will sound different.

Sonarworks doesn't correct rooms. All those 37 measurements are there to remove the room modes from the calculation by averaging them out. What is left to be corrected is the speakers, and it does this pretty near perfectly. And of course it works best in a room that you have treated to get rid of those huge modal dips. And do you really not want your audience to hear what you hear? How do you even start to imagine what your mix sounds like if you boost the bass in the control room? This seems to be a very odd way of working.

Can you please advise me I need alot of help I just got sonar works and have 2 monitors and a sub I didn’t buy the multi channel version because I thought I didn’t need it for just one sub how would I make the sub leveled also with the monitors after testing and then the mic level when testing kept clipping I had to higher monitor volume on my interface and lower mic level alot so I don’t know if I even accurately tested everything I think I’m going to have to do it again and another thing is after the correction I couldn’t hear that much of a change and also the volume got lowered to were on my Apollo I had to almost turn the headphones volume all the way up just to get decent gain to hear alot more question and sorry for all this but please respond if you can thanks

@donepearce 3 ай бұрын
@@Observerw Just use Sonarworks for the final part. Use REW (freeware) to adjust the sub to as close as you can get it to the same level as the mains. Make the transition frequency range as flat as possible. If there is a big dip, you probably need to change the phase switch on the sub. Ony once all that is done can you use Sonarworks to tie it all together cleanly.
