A client of mine recently asked me, does Suboxone help with pain? This is a fantastic question that I am happy to answer for you!
Please subscribe and help my vision of helping inspire many! / @drbaddictionrecovery
Recover from addiction by calling me: (800) 779-4715
Or visit: american-addiction.com/
The quick answer is, yes Suboxone does help with pain, but there's a lot more to this issue than just that.
Suboxone and Buprenorphine was first created in the 1960's as a synthetic Opioid for dealing with pain.

You should have more subscribers. I put myself into a rehabilitation program because I was tired of my life being the way that it was, it's getting better 8 months in but it's not perfect. I'm on Suboxone 8mg twice a day. I just had surgery yesterday, a meatotomy, I was concerned about pain and was instructed to stop my Suboxone the night before, I gave it a full 24hrs. The anesthetist was amazing, she even came back after my surgery and was very supportive about what I was trying to do to improve my life. People are understanding, not everyone but quite a few. It was a positive experience for what was necessary. Suboxone is a great tool, but it is a tool. Tools are wielded with intention, it's necessary, if recovery is to be had, the patient is set on recovery. Thank you for the videos

Thank you for answering the question that I had about why we have not been using this drug for so long especially when everyone is screaming about the opioid crisis. I was given Vicodin for almost 20 years. 90 tablets a month at the highest dose for fibromyalgia and carpal tunnel. When I was a probably cut off because of insurance I did not go to the streets to get illegal drugs I just dealt with the pain which basically was ruining my life. I won’t go into other details but I just started the Butrans patch two weeks ago and a 5 mg dose which is not really addressing all the pain issues I have at this stage of my life. I can’t believe I lost so many years because of this pain and his medication was available all along especially considering I have about a dozen doctors that all hear my complaining about the chronic pain limiting my progress with physical therapy and basically limiting my life to the four walls in my flat. I’ll never get that time back.

I have been taking 8-24mg of buprenorphine for 28 months now since my release from prison and it has given me stability in my life and has curbed my cravings for the most part. The one time i quit taking sub for a couple days I overdosed on fentanyl and it really scared me. Suboxone works if you stick to it and focus on accomplishing goals in life to keep your mind occupied with positive thoughts.

Good info, thanks Dr! Thankfully, everything you said matched up to what my Dr. said. It's interesting that Suboxone is only on-label for addiction. I was prescribed up to 45 mg Oxycodone daily for nearly two years and my tolerance was building so fast! I'm so glad my dr. and I switched to Suboxone, it's basically better in every way (for me), consistent pain relief and a clearer mind. It seems like it's only a matter of time until it gets labeled for pain relief. I'm never the kind of person thinking there are big conspiracies but I really wonder where are the Oxy money was going..

Great question! Yes, not only degree of pain but also type of pain. For example, if you gave it to someone with an acute compound fracture it certainly will help but not appropriate. Does not work fast enough. Also, someone with cancer in their spine or any other awful cancer that keeps getting worse, this is only good for so long. Finally, the expectation of relief. This is much more complex and depends on the individual biology, psychology, and believe it or not the culture they live in. Having said all of that, pound for pound it is a great analgesic! Thank you so much for your great question.

It does absolutely nothing for pain the only thing it does do is stop opiate cravings but the downside and it’s a huge downside is it is the hardest thing in the world to get off of depending how long you’re on it it takes almost a month of pretty severe withdrawal symptoms if it’s far better to just stop cold turkey sit in the bathtub for a 5 days and get on with your life. I absolutely hate to recommend some VUDU Dr. hippie medicine but Kratom is probably the best alternative and it actually does something for pain.
@jeremytate3664
@jeremytate3664 3 жыл бұрын
I have Degenerative Disk Disease and I am a recovering addict. I wish I had stumbled in this video earlier on because I had to stumble on this by chance. I was taking upwards of an ounce per day of Kratom and since I was an addict I didn't go to pain management. I had a level 5-7 pain in my back on a daily basis and it would occur 3 to 5 times a day. It was hell. I was being treated with Gabbapentin, meloxicam, flexiril, and skalexin which took the pain down to a level 3-5 pain. But one day when I went in for a radio ablasion ans my blood pressure was through the roof and it started staying that way. Come to find out kratom can rais your blood pressure... so I asked my wife to find me either a methadone clinic or a suboxone clinic and she randomly found a suboxone clinic. All I can say brother is it saved my life. I am only 35 and I was ready to be fused in 2 places and look at getting on disability. It is my belief that the companies that produce the true opiates (IE hydrocodone, oxycodone, fyntynol) keep buprenorphine labeled only for opiate replacement therapy. As I am being treated off label for pain with subutex. Ok as for your original question... the buprenorphine took my back pain down to at most a level 2 to 3 pain maybe 2 or 3 times a month. Now I have also noticed that my all around pain tolerance is pretty high now. Much higher than before. Like when you stub your toe or cut yourself the sensation is dulled. However the pain I get from deep down in my back, like down in my actual vertebra and my joints still ache. So I'm not sure it helps so much with arthritis and pains of that sort but my back pain is so much better and I don't have to worry about abusing my medicine since I was started on actual suboxone and I have a very high affinity for naloxone which made it impossible for me to use when I was angry or upset or sad. Hope that helped!

@@MrJfaucett i am prescribed three 8 mg tablets a day. But I have been on the drug for 2 years and I was started on two 8 mg strips a day. I can usually manage just fine with 2, however if it is a particularly bad day or if I have to do any lifting or driving then that 3rd one is definitely a big BIG help. It's strange because when using it sublingualy I receive the pain blocking affects fairly quick but like the doctor said all patients are different. Hope this answer helped. I am a big advocate of buprenorphine in place of full on agonist... atleast for someone like me with substance abuse.

I've been on morphine 15mg ER twice a day and 10mg of percocet 4 times a day since 2012. I've had 2 anterior cervical fusions (3 levels) as well as posterior cervical fusion with the 2nd surgery...it was to "correct" the previous surgery. However with each surgery I very had even more pain. I had a pain pump implanted (because I didn't want to take meds anymore and was told it would help) within 10 days it was infected and taken out so was given pain meds yet again. I've been given medical marijuana but hare being high. I'm so scared. Cause even though the pain meds aren't as effective I know what to expect! And w/o I also know the pain and idk. Gabapentin does help but of course not like the pain meds. But I absolutely hate having to take ANYTHING but I HATE THE PAIN MUCH MORE. I truly wish they can just give me a nerve block so that I just don't feel the pain but theyve said I'm no longer a candidate because of myelomalacia

I found that every time I go back to Subutex it gets harder to get used to. It gets to the point that the Buprenorphine becomes less offensive. The Buprenorphine seems to take away the physical withdrawals but the mental withdrawals tend to drive you insane. I cant find any videos in this matter. Jumping from one to the other is a problem that a lot of people have problems that they can't seem to get used to. Thank you Martin.

It fir pain ??? Buprenorphine quickly increases tolerance, and it's highly addictive. In chronic use the dies to be effective has to be so high that it's not tolerable, but because it is so addictive its had to stop taking buprenorphine. So what do you do when you have a buprenorphine addiction and it hurts and you cannot get off it? It has a really worse side effect at doses needed to treat pain. It's only good for acute pain like after surgery. Then you do not have time to develop tolerance, or addiction. But use it for chronic pain and you gave both look problems. Buprenorphine is not good at treating severe pain compared to traditional opioids. Terrible long term side effects, complications , and addiction problems with buprenorphine. There are no human studies to show that buprenorphine can be safe or effective in long term chronic pain patients. None what so ever. So why do we see the same individules pumping this drug , because they can get away with saying things that are not allowed on the label. It's no accident. On the other hand, traditional opioids such as the many ER opioids have a 20 year proven history of being safe and effective in the treatment of chronic pain, AND, have a very low, less than 1% risk of addiction according to the NIH. That is more than we can say about buprenorphine. Men especially do not like the chemical castrating effect of buprenorphine. Just something to thing about -- no large number, long term Human studies -- none. Traditional opiods are much safer for the treatment of chronic pain. The best use for buprenorphine is not in the management of long term legitimate pain.

You do not kn ok w the difference between acute and chronic pain. Its weaker than traditional opiates, and has wise side effects. Also there is no human studies that show it's safe or effective. It us not. And its not approved!! The reason why there is no human studies to show it is safe or effective is no accident. It's a cover up. Manufactures do n ok t want to do a large number study or a long term study because they rightly fear that serious side effects will occur, and they will lose their multi billion dollar product. They do not want it taken off the market. They get it approved for drug abuse treatment, and then tell us to use it off label, and they have a snake oil salesman pushing it. Same strategy, but different players.

Hi Doctor, In your experience with this medication, have any of your patients complained of severe sweating and weight gain? I’m gaining weight at an incredible rate. Another side effect I have noticed is that I am sweating like there’s no tomorrow. Not in my armpits, but my face my back and my chest they are the ones that get the worst. It affects me to lay down because I feel like I am in the middle of a flu, I am soaking wet shaking and I don’t know if it’s this medication causing it or something else. Thank you

I would really like to have some drinks with my husband on Valentine's Day and I'm just wondering if it's safe? I thought maybe I could not take it for 12 to 24 hours beforehand. In terms of helping for pain, Buprenorpjine helps much more with pain for opioid naive patients than patients who are switching to it from a full agonist. I’m on 24mg of subutex from your practice and while it does help with pain, it doesn’t help with the breakthrough, higher levels, of pain. Butrans is also great, but it’s meant for the opioid naive patients as the dosage is sooo much lower than on 8mg subutex, at the highest dose it’s 100MCG/hour so that’s another challenge, Butrans isn’t made in high enough doses

I used to be anxies and had panic atacks so I have been using clonopin too. For many years. It was not easy but after years of therapies and "being still adict" I realized something chanded. Hello Dr. B...I am a recent subscriber. Really enjoy your videos. My question is how does buprenorphine work for breakthrough pain? Let’s take a person with chronic low back pain. That person takes a 30mg Hysingla daily and Norco for flaming episodes. The Norco could be 40mg/day. What dose of bupe would be required to equal the analgesic effect of 70mg of hydrocodone? Bupe is supposedly 40x more powerful than hydrocodone. If true, then just 2mg of bupe should do the trick. But I find that hard to believe??? Full disclosure, my opinion is that sub/bupe is a wonder drug for opiate replacement therapy but not for real pain. Oxy is usually prescribed after surgery. Not bupe! I’ve binge watched a number of your videos but have not come across this question. I look forward to your response. And if I lived in your neck of the woods I would certainly want you for my MD. My regards, Jim

I was disabled on duty in a patrol car accident. I broke my neck I broke my back I suffered a severe closed head injury and a severe spinal cord injury that has left me in severe chronic pain. I have been on methadone 20 mg a day for a long time and it works. I mean it really really works I'm not stoned I get up I contribute I have a life I'm interested I'm engaging well today my pain. He's not writing it anymore and he's put me on to Suboxone. I wish I had a choice in the matter it's like take it or fuck off. I have to be off the methadone for 3 days and to be honest I don't know if that's going to be long enough before I take the first dose will it send me into opiate withdrawal because I heard that methadone withdrawal is a real MFer. God has not made a man yet that I'm afraid of but there are a few things that scare the piss out of me als, dementia, Parkinson's, being back in that wheelchair and opiate withdrawal. Truly worried I'm truly scared I mean hell I'm going to be honest I'm terrified! I feel like I've been backed into a corner I had no choice in and I want to do what comes natural and that is to come out fighting cuz I don't trust this doctor they've screwed me twice this year alone. So the question I have is when I take it on the third day is it going to kick me into full opiate withdrawal? Why is it the chronic pain suffers or treated like heroin addicts? In a way it's on it's its own form of an ism. It's enough to make a 17 and a half year police officer veterans start thinking about growing his own opium producing poppies in the back!

Buprenorphine is dangerous for long term pain use. There is no human study showing that it us safe or effective long term. And rarely do they advertise the chemical castration effect of buprenorphine. It shrivels your nuts and dick to a prime size. True. Its quick to develop toler as nice meaning you have to increase the does to control ppl ain until the dose us so high that side effects are intolerable. Buprenorphine is also very addicting so you are trading one addiction for another. WtF. It has a place for addiction treatment, risk mitigation. But its weak when it comes to treating pain compared to traditional opiates. That's why manufactures like to avoid human large number studies and head to head comparing against traditional opioids. Buprenorphine is being pimped for a lot of reasons, but economically based. As opposed to patient based in talking about treatment of chronic pain in legit patients, under doctors care.
@hhenrynice6843
@hhenrynice6843 3 жыл бұрын
This is just one of the poorly studied side effects and adverse reactions regarding buprenorphine. We need human studies for the treatment of pain. All the studies that do exist say the same thing. We do not know if buprenorphine is safe or effective in humans, but there are a lot of physicians experimenting on people like lab rats, but even that is largely undocumented. Stay with proven traditional opioids until human studies are done. It could be that buprenorphine is pulled from the market. It the risk ok f a life long disability worth it?

The real answer is no! the doctors all have a crush on Suboxone because it lessens their liability. There are a few cases where with extreme Adickes Suboxone can save their life but for the most part it is extremely over prescribed it’s almost impossible to get off of and there’s almost no addict on this planet that needs more than 2 mg of it a day but yet the doctors give huge doses.

Suboxone does not at all help pain. Maybe psychologically, but in reality, buprenorphine does not help real pain. I've been on it a long time, and tylenol is more effective for pain. I take buprenorphine for migraines, because its safer than staydol, and more effective. But as far as pain, no, I'm still in a lot of pain, it never helped with pain, but I'd rather not have migraines and deal with the pain, than have migraines and take a full opiate. On top of that, there are a lot of issues with suboxone, and a lot of beneficial medications you cant take because of it.

I have been on Suboxone for pain for the past 6-7years . (but its only available thru a "opioid dependency program" as it ls not allowed to be used just for pain in my state). I am technically diagnosed as a "opiate dependent" in order to receive this med... -the IRONIC part is I have never taken more than 2 weeks worth of opiates in MY ENTIRE LIFE. ( after 2 seperate surgeries --1 dental surgery about 25yrs ago when I was very young, and then another week of opiates after an unexpected C-section and hysterectomy about 12+yrs ago). No other opiates. But then I was in a car accident which occurred 9yrs ago --- (that actually killed the other person in the other car who turned left in front of me). It caused severe damaged to my neck , thoracic and lumbar spine... C1-L2 ... the accident caused a spinal syrinx/syringomyelia. I did everything for pain BUT optiates, with Zero success, (heat/ice, nsaids, aspirin, chiropractor, accupuncture, meditation, gua sha stone work, muscle relaxers, diet change, massage, yoga etc with NO relief). Lost my RN job eventually, and couldn't work as a RN anymore due to ongoing debilitating pain, and I was almost non-existent for my kids and hubby. But then my as my MD of 20+yrs retired--he mentioned another MD-- this MD had a small (1day/week) Sub /MAT cllinic besides his nromal PCP practice. This new MD put me on Suboxone strips right away and WITHIN 6 MONTHS I was working FULL-TIME again as a RN, volunteering at ny kids school and returned back to my full life I had BEFORE my car accident. The only downside is that for THE REST OF MY LIFE I am LABELLED as having an "OPIATE MISUSE DISORDER". Just to have a PAIN FREE LIFE again. Its sad. And I often feel embarrassed when i visit my PCP at my MAT clinic appointment every 3months. The social workers have to ask me about misuse/cravings/shooting up etc.... something I've never had or experienced. .bit to be able to go back to ky paon freed life I guess its worht it. I just don't understand why I have to be "labeled" as an abuser/the STIGMA to get access to a pain medicine that has allowed me to go back to workand live a full life, and that has NO addictive properties.

Hello there. 😌👋 I appreciate you sharing. However, as someone who has been “successfully” on Suboxone for 6 1/2 years, I’m going to have to politely disagree in my personal experience.. yes, it has kept me from taking pain pills.. However every single day I suffer in ((((excruciating))) chronic pain. 😢💔 I am a 35 year old female, and for the last 5 + years I have been to soooo many different doctors trying to figure out what’s going on with my body why I’m in such horrible pain. … I was a gymnast as a teenager and I did hurt my back when I was 17 so I always kind of had some back issues but nothing at all like the pain I’ve been experiencing for the last 5+ years! at times it is literally debilitating.😣😔 all throughout my spine and my hips and my legs . Suboxone Does not help at all. Sometimes I wonder if it’s even causing me to have more pain as crazy as that sounds!??!! I am desperate for a relief. I want to try natural alternatives, but a part of me is even tempted to try to go on methadone (wish I never thought I would even consider) but I literally have hardly know quality of life in this kind of pain!!!😭💔 for context, I used to be a model and I used to be a make up Artist. I used to volunteer at my local animal shelter. Now my pain is so debilitating that I am unable to engage in the things that I love and it is devastating to me. I am desperate for help. The rheumatologist diagnosed me about five years ago with Fibromyalgia, but my physical therapist thinks that I might have EDS?! & in my blood work. My CCP count is very elevated a strong positive which usually indicates rheumatoid arthritis, but my rheumatologist doesn’t seem to be convinced that I have RA. I am so confused and seriously at my wits end with all this my pain is so bad it’s literally caused me to feel suicidal.. one cannot begin to understand or imagine unless they are in horrible pain every day. 😔💔 I would love to hear any feedback that you may have.!!🙏🙏🫶💞💞 of course I appreciate all of your knowledge, but I’m just speaking from my own personal experience with buprenorphine. It is NOT helping me treat my chronic pain whatsoever…🥺… I really wish it was. I take 100 mg ibuprofen and Tylenol in hot showers to help control the pain. 😔 any feedback would be much appreciated.!!🙏🙏🫶🫶
