i love using the oven method, but i start in a cold oven and set it to 375, once it comes up to temp i do about 15 minutes for thick sliced bacon, maybe 8-10 on regular thickness

I like doing the oven method because I can do other things. It helps me a lot because my 5 yr old, 40 yr old hubby, & 90 yr old grandmother in law want the food ASAP.

Personally I prefer using the airfryer now. Takes 5 minutes max and is always super crispy.

I found that the water method worked well for the texture. But it also pulled a lot of the flavor out of the bacon

What I’ve been doing recently is putting one of those cooling racks inside a baking tray, putting some water in the bottom of the tray, then putting the bacon on the rack above the water. I use the broiler setting on the oven and just kind of keep an eye on it - takes about 10 min and gets pretty crispy without drying out

I've been doing the oven bacon since I was a teen working at McDonald's 14 years ago. Bacon comes out good and crispy (to your liking) and you don't have to worry about watching it so much or grease popping.

I’d love to make my bacon in an oven but my mom stores all her pans in the oven so it’s just a hassle to take them out often. That and the fact that we have no ac in the house (the house gets super warm when the oven is on) are why we don’t cook in the oven.

This is often how bacon is made in restaurants as well. But it’s probably more of a time saver since you can do a bigger batch at one time.

I think i'll stick to oven bacon however a similar trick you can do with mushrooms, add like 1/4 cup of water and a a small amount of oil and by the time the pan is dry the mushrooms have released all their water and shrunk so they don't need nearly as much oil to cook. That one was a game changer for me.

I bake bacon and boil hotdogs. You can also bake eggs, but for that I usually just put a few in an electric kettle, set to boil, then time around 4 to 5 minutes after it hit boil and shut off to get solid soft-ish boiled eggs.

The water bacon looked crispier. You should do a follow up where you take a bite of both. Oven bacon looked like it had a little more flop to it.

It actually doesn't. Here's my theory: since you're starting with more water, the temp can't get above 212F until it's gone, unlike adding water to a hot pan which is going to be likely over 300F, which causes that instant, more explosive boiling effect of splatter. No actual scientific data to support this guess, though.

@@glurganergc4856 it's not weird, water evaporates and fat doesn't, which is why hot fat usually is much hotter than hot water. So if you add oil to water, the fat just swims on top while the water slowly evaporates, which takes a lot of energy. When pouring water in hot oil it sinks to the bottom due to its higher density and instantly some of it evaporates due to the high heat around it, which in turn makes it expand under the layer of fat, splattering the fat everywhere. I think the best bacon I’ve ever had is from using one of those air fryer oven trays. It takes forever but it’s worth it and the bacon drippings fall down into the lower tray so you can easily drain the fat when done.

My aunt taught me to lay bacon in paper towel and microwave it for around 2 and a half minutes. Works like a charm 👌🏻

Sprinkle a tiny bit of flour on your bacon when you bake it. It will crisp it up better as well.

350 oven middle rack on parchment - lower and slower renders fat evenly. Don’t be shy with the black pepper before it goes in oven.

I do use the trick of a splash of water and a lid for the first 5minutes frying, using the steam to cook it and render the fat. The trick to crispy skin/fat is low and slow (thinking duck, and pork in particular for Chinese style roast duck and pork crackling respectively. Too fast may not be crispy enough too high may burn it before best crispiness.

Recently, I was feeling lazy and mildly creative for dinner after work one night. I took a chunk of pre-sliced bacon and instead of laying each strip out flat on a baking sheet I threw the whole chunk on there and cooked it like a roast on 350° for little over an hour, monitoring it about every 15 mins. Then I drip dried it for a bit and gave it a pat down to soak up any further grease. Let it cool off a few minutes and made bacon, ranch and cheddar tortilla wraps with spinach, caramelized onion and tomato. Was too good to eat regularly. Take care y'all 👌😎🍍

So I think the TikTok is missing part of the equation, they use it with whole strips, when it works best with lardons. Kai I know you know about active a passive times in restaurant prep, because you basically went over it in the video… (“you just walk away.”) When you render bacon for bacon bits, you have to keep on stirring for like 15 minutes to get the result you want, if you add some water, the cook time goes from 15 minutes to 25, but really it’s only 5 minutes of active stirring so you’re saving 10 minutes working on tasks you couldn’t have before.

i think where the water method works best is for really fatty cuts of meat you're tryna render. like, if i was making carbonara and i really wanted to render out as much fat from the guanciale ill do this

That dog knows whats commin lol. I always go oven for bacon. Thats how we did it at the resturants I worked at also. I lay mine out on parchment paper. 375-400f You can set it and forget it which is nice but it also doesnt wreck your range

Pan way better. You could hold it at the bottom end and it's stands crisp, the oven one you had to hold it at the top and was jiggling.

If you want your bacon super crispy like a heathen just cook it longer or hotter. Bacon should be crisp around the edges and enough to stand up on its own, but should still have chew to it.

The problem that I have with the stovetop and water method is that when using a smoked bacon it loses a lot of smoke flavor and salinity due to the water soluble nature of the smoke flavor and salt.

Oven is the only way. The water in the pan is a good trick. But oven to me keeps the integrity of the bacon, while in a pan it tends to shrink and break apart more. Oven also rotates the heat instead a pan is direct heat. Also water and hot fats don't mix well. So watch that heavy splatter when cooking it.

Regardless if you let the bacon sit on a wire rack for a couple of minutes after cooking it'll allow it to set.

I love your oven method greatness might try myself. But ur actually suppose to technically boil but it's in a saucepan so idk but add More water enough for it to kinda boil. It takes quite a bit longer, about 30 mins sometimes. But it renders the fat and tase decent, ofc there's no fat but still can't go wrong with bacon 😊😋

The chef dude that I’m assuming everyone has been talking about said in his video if he was working in a kitchen or something he would never do that because of the time and that you can still get good bacon in the oven. In your experiment tho it does seem like the oven bacon was ‘floppier’ but personally that’s how I prefer my bacon. When I worked at Wendy’s my manager always got on me for not literally burning the bacon to the point it crumbles in your hands 🥺

Different techniques for different purposes like i prefer to make like diner confit bacon which i cook at like scorching heat for blts while for other purposes i just start the bacon on a cold pan on low heat and let time do the work.

Normal bacon I prefer a skillet I want uneven cooking I want crispy parts I'll even go to almost burnt while still having flexible chewy parts in the same strip but oven is where to go if you're cooking bulk or for even cooking from what I've seen
