We've all heard of the famous G5RV antenna. But is it really all it's cracked up to be? How well do they work if at all? What do you need to avoid when deploying the antenna to ensure it works properly.
We answer "Does the G5RV suck?" on Ask an Elmer.

Love my G5RV. Worked Japan, the Caribbean, Europe, all out of Western Canada. On 100W. You don’t need a hexbeam and an amp to work DX 😎

Been running G5RV's for 17 years now as an inverted V about 30ft with great success. I sometimes switch between my dipole and vertical depending on conditions, but I have found them to be comparable and had lots of fun over the years with em- Never had the cashola to dump into a tower setup for comparison, but I don't feel handicapped with my G5RV's in any way.. 73's W5YAK

I was in a radio club in the UK and met a ham who knew G5RV who was quite clear that it was really a 20m antenna and never intended or designed to be wide band. So one of the presenters was correct.

I used a G5RV while on Pitcairn Island, supporting pole, a very big and long bamboo pole I worked the world having a blast. They work well and meet my needs 🥰

I use g5rv very good antenna with manual tuner. Not the best on 17m or 10m. But when 17m and 10m open still works. I feed mine with 100 ft of rg8x. 73s.

I’ve worked the world on a G5RV, got my WAS & DXCC using it. Mine wasn’t installed perfectly but it was still doing a pretty good job.

I got the mini version of G5RV. Mainly due to its smaller size and weight which will allow me in difficult field installation (i.e. lack of trees or space to install the full size G5RV). G5RV lacks of 80m band (the ATU does not help here much), but 40m and 20m work good. Did Spain twice, about 2000km away from me, and all that on Xiegu G90 and away from urban QRMs. The G5RV mini could be better or should I say, it should be mounted much higher than I do it (6m fishing pole), but it does the job for now.

Whatever it's failings, the thing works! I have one, frankly after buying my radios and other essentials, I wanted an antenna that 1) worked 2) was cheap 3) easy to put up! Much like a cheap Chinese HT, it gets you on the air, and that surely is what it is all about! 72 Jim M7BXT

I have a G5RV half wave up at 20feet with feeder horizontal to the antenna (think Y shape) and work West Coast USA from North East Uk on 10m with 90watts. Have also worked Chile and Brazil as well as out to China and deep into Russia on 20m. Yes undoubtedly compromised but works for me 😊73

Back in 1958, the G5RV was quite a thing, but in the mid-1980s it was improved out of sight by engineer, Dr Brian Austin (ZS6BKW). "In summary, the ZS6BKW antenna is an optimized variant of the venerable old G5RV. Unlike the original G5RV, which requires an antenna tuner on all bands, the ZS6BKW / G5RV is capable of operating on 10, 12, 17, 20 & 40m bands, generally without a tuner, and with SWR readings usually at 1.5:1 or less. Using a tuner, 6, 15, 30 & 80m bands are attained with much higher efficiency than the original G5RV." www.ni4l.com/zs6bkw-g5rv-optimized-multi-band-hf-dipole-antenna-poly-stealth/

The funky installation isn't the antenna's fault!

G5RV really sucked for me, Antron 99 and my homemade 10m dipole blew it out of the water. Must be different locations that work better than others. Had mine up at 45 feet, wind finally took it down, and it will stay down. Now to decide between an End Fed or DX Commander

It doesn't need bashing. I've got one up at about 50 ft between two trees....been there for four years. With a MFJ tuner into a Yaesu 991 I have worked stations all over the world. At first it was my only antenna. Now, I just use it for 30, 40. 80, and a little 160. I have a hex beam for 20 up to 6 m. now. Depending on your location and environment there are certainly other antenna but few can match the price vs performance. It's still a good ole piece of equipment....until you can afford something better.

It fits in a typical yard/property. And it can be tuned. Now when my knowledge grew as a new ham I clipped it for 20/40 and i worked the same locations at 1/6 the power that cool.

I've been running a g5rv for 21 consecutive the antenna does not suck without the tuner and any full 100 w on 40 m again without the tuner SWR 42.8 21 20 m I'm off 3.1 10 w 1.5 1.8.1 20 m 40 m 10 m+ 30 I will run full power with a tuner tunes very well rst o 579 and higher ninety percent of the time 30 same results

On 80M I heard a German complain that signals from the UK are often weaker (vs EU?). An old British chap replied that he wished G5RV had been strangled at birth! I guess it's to do with our small houses (half a US house), and gardens only averaging 160 m2.

What is the normal SWR measurements for the G5RV without an antenna analyzer? Our G5RV measured 2.6 on 14.250, 3 on 7.1, 3.1 on 3.7. Is this normal? TNX AC0AE

Why buy a die pole ?? Best thing to do is build one and why buy lossy coax build feed line. Makes the best multi band ant with a balance tuner 😉😉 visit the Toad Harbor Facebook page will explain how to make the open feed line ☺️no loss KC3ONO

@@SteveWrightNZ I ask again why spend 120$ on sum thing you can make for 40$ ? And why by .85 coax when wire is .97-.98 jacketed copper ?? Does not make sense and I rather suggest saving $$ and making your first. Learn and get the most of you 100w yea if you want to upgrade do a tower and beams 😉 save the $$ toward a amp. Balance tuners are cheaper, imho
