In which I attempt to pronounce Cernunnos correctly.
Uncover characters from Irish mythology who may-or may not-have connections to Celtic mythology’s most recognizable deity, the horned god Cernunnos. (And maybe have a wee bit of fun along the way)

I very much appreciate the honesty of your approach to Celtic mythology! After two centuries of "druidic revivalists" like Iolo Morganwg who have proffered the equivalent of Celtic fan-fiction based on imagination rather than scholarship, with a thinly-veiled motive of self-aggrandizement, offering up their preferred interpretation as objective truth, it is refreshing to hear someone clearly state the limits of our knowledge and cite and relate real source material.

Thank you for this comment, you definitely understand what I'm trying to do here! While everyone is entitled to their beliefs, my goal is to critically examine source materials (which includes recognizing their limitations, since Celtic mythology was originally an oral tradition, of course).

Another fantastic analysis of Irish mythology, thanks! This one was timely. I'm writing a piece set in ancient Ireland and in it I have a figure called "the Antlered Man". In my notes I make reference to "the Dagda, or also Conall Cernach or Saint Ciarán of the 6th C CE/AD" but I'd never heard of the Dearg Corra possible connection. Thanks again for this! BTW, in my "Appendix N" section I've added your channel as a great source for info on Irish myths. I hope you're okay with that inclusion. :) Have a great day.

Great video ! Horned gods tends to be horny in other mythologies doesn't it? And serpents are often representing a power of "reproduction". Horned gods are giver of life, so I guess Dagda fits pretty well. Excuse my english, I'm french...

Merci beaucoup ! (ma femme est française !). And yes I agree with you, very good points. In retrospect I could have spent more time on the fertility symbolism...I might have to revisit that for a future video (re: Irish/Celtic fertility deities)

Excellent video! Uindos is cognate with Finn and Gwynn, both from Proto-Celtic *Windos. I agree that Derg Corra (and the Welsh Gwythyr ap Greidawl) is a better fit for Cernunnos than Finn.

Tank you! Finally a Celtic mythology channel that is based on actual facts and not amazingly sounding rumors and neopaganism! Just a question: I know that Cú Chulainn can grow a horn Lón láith on his forehead. Could that be a possible connection to the horny… I mean the horned god?
@irishmyths
@irishmyths Ай бұрын
Thank *you* for so perfectly articulating what it is I'm trying to do here! And re: Cú Chulainn's horn...I had never heard of that before! I know when he enters his "war spasm" his forehead splits open and one of his eyes bulges out...and come to think of it that already sounds a lot like what you just mentioned. Definitely could be a horned god connection there!

The Dagda would be Sagittarius, known in ancient times as Pabilsag, his name even means "Chief Ancestor", he stands in front of the Golden Gate of the Gods, the center of our galaxy, where stars are born that they called Gods. He and Enki are associated with each other through Damu, known as The Child, the dying and rising healing god, Underworld God. Pabilsag's wife is Goddess of Dogs, mother of Gods, the She Goat, Bau-Gula, associated with Hercules, seen as the Sitting Dog, that sits on top of the roof of Ophiuchus, the Healing Cave.

So glad more and more people point out the distinction between irish, welsh and gaulish. Too long evrything "celtic" has all been muddled togethef. The Dagda, the Beasts of Cerna, Cerniam, Conall Cernach have all been pointed out as possible equivalents. I've not been convinced so far.

I believe you need to look at December 5th, the festival of Faunus, when I say look at December 5th, look at the stars, the ones around the Sun on that day, you show him holding animals in both hands, the Sun is in Ophiuchus, the serpent holder, where you find NOT a crow, but the Eagle Aquilla, the horn connection comes from Vega the harp star, known as the She Goat, as Faunus has been connected with Pan, Rudra as well. If you look at the outline of Ophiuchus, its in the shape of a Cave Door, above Aquilla is Delphinus the Dolphin, not the Salmon of knowledge, it's 9 stars has been associated with the 9 Muses, next to the Northern Cross Cygnus the Swan. Scorpio and Ophiuchus are small and squeezed together next to Libra the Scales, where you find the Fall Equinox, cut day and night in half. All these silly stories you tell in mythology comes from those that have knowledge of the stars and there movements, they didn't have the internet and TV to grow-up on. The World Tree is planted in the center of our galaxy, found between Ophiuchus and Sagittarius, running through the tree are the 3 leaps of the Gazelle, the 3 sets of twin stars of Ursa Major's paws. When Ursa Major stands on the northern horizon, taking up center stage in the southern sky is Ophiuchus, with Vega at midheaven, the She Goat. Or turn this into a Cross, Ophiuchus is pyramidal on top, poke the cross into the heart of the Scorpion, now like Moses, drape a serpent on that cross, this is what's seen above Jerusalem Christmas day at 12:00 noon. Until you obtain knowledge of the stars, you will always be confused by these astrological stories.

When the Deer has lost his Horn, it's not yet mating season, he's not ready to mate until his horns grow back, you seem to not understand these stories you're reading to us. I'll point out your stories, don't worry about interacting, I notice that's for those who praise you, for all of your knowledge from reading all those books, but I could be wrong about all of this, I am a high school drop out, who couldn't read or write, but I do have ears to hear and eyes to see what most everybody is missing, these stories are coming from star knowledge, which in ancient times were the wise of them all. Isn't funny, Dagda sound like the god of knowledge Dagon or Dagan the fish head grain god, in Hebrew, 'dag' mean Fish, but is spoken as Dog, What was Dagda's grandson's name Cú Chulainn, Kulullû means "Fish-Man", Kulullû was one of the monstrous children/demons of Tiamat in the Babylonian creation story of Enûma Eliš. The word for warrior is Wolf Head, Ur-sag, have you ever heard of the Wolf Warriors. There is the 7 Apkallu, and Cú Chulainn's name is Setanta means 70, the 7 apkallu are the 7 stars of the Beg Dipper, father of the Little Dipper, Ursa Minor, which in ancient times The Standing Wolf, Wepwawet, the son of Seth, the Wolf Headed War God. The title of Wepwawet is "Opener of the Ways", and Setanta is "He who knows the Way". "Ur" means Dog or even Wolf, and "sa" means Red, but sa can be short for 'sag' meaning Head. Just before the 70 day drop below the horizon by the Dog Star Sirius, they would sacrifice a Red Dog to Canicula, meaning Puppy Dog, and Cú Chulainn means "Hound Puppy", from Irish Cú Coileáinín, Hound Puppy, the word coileán means "pup", "cub" or Whelp, including the Man Whelp, it also means Young Fighting Man, a Warrior, and my favorite "Trickster", ha ha ha

All excellent. But would it hurt so much just to say BC and AD? If you are going to use my Christian calendar, do me the courtesy of using the traditional abbreviations. And you will save yourself the extra syllable of breath and energy every time you say BC. C'mon -- we all know it's easier than B.C.E. i can guarantee you that anyone you might be trying to "include" has nothing but contempt for western european mythology :-)

It’s not actually about inclusion, although some people might think it is. It’s because they calculated the dates wrong when they came up with the terms. The whole point of BCE/CE is to recognize the error and then to move forward.

@@DneilB007 Nah it's to mess with western civilization and be woke/DEI/MARXIST. We are using the Gregorian Calendar which corrected the mistakes you are speaking of in 1582 in the Julian Calendar. So, your talking point needs to be returned to where you found it. They changed nothing but the nomenclature of the culture that developed it. No dates, no calculation, nothing was changed but references to the God the developers worshipped. Or do you doubt me? Recognize an error that has been fixed for 442 years? Really now.

@@seifer447 Blatant cultural approbation or doesn't it matter when it deals with Christians? Do the religious connotations bother you? It was a hypocritical move by scumbag elite that would not have been done to any other culture. The world never was "Christian centric". Why don't we rename the planets instead using some old pagan gods names? The world isn't Romano centric any more. Changing this was another attack on Western civilization by the left.
