We often hear about the power of the Jewish Lobby in American politics and its impact on Middle Eastern politics. But who are the people involved, and what are their aims? We travel to New York to find out.
Outside Israel, more Jews live in America than anywhere else. New York is where the influential Jewish community works to promote its interests. " I know Secretary Clinton well, and Vice-President Biden ," says Head of the Presidents of American Jewish Organisations. "Even the President will take my call, as long as I don t call collect ," he laughs. When Israel launched its recent attacks on Gaza, the response from the Jewish community was instantaneous. "We went in, we saw success ," says rabbi and TV presenter Shmuel Butman. Soldiers say they saw divine intervention, miracles . But the community s reaction was not unified.
"Israel' s response was too large, too focused on the military ," says member of Rabbis for Human Rights Ellen Lipman. "The idea that there is a unified Jewish lobby is a myth", says Jewish Affairs expert J. J. Goldman, "and the community is rife with tensions." However, Rabbi Lipman remains optimistic. Jews are a vocal people...We have been known for a long time as people of the Book and now continue to be people of words. And I think there is something healthy about debate .

Israel is the largest recipient of U.S. Foreign Military Financing. For FY2020, the President's request for Israel would encompass approximately 57% of total requested FMF funding worldwide. Since the October War in 1973, Washington has provided Israel with a level of support dwarfing the amounts provided to any other state. It has been the largest annual recipient of direct U.S. economic and military assistance since 1976 and the largest total recipient since World War ll. Total direct U.S. aid to Israel amounts to well over $140 billion in 2003 dollars. Israel receives over $3 billion in direct foreign assistance each year, which is roughly one-fifth of America's entire foreign aid budget. In per capita terms, the United States gives each Israeli a direct subsidy worth about $500 M per year. Contrary to ordinary U.S. policy, Israel has been and continues to be allowed to use approximately 26% of U.S. military aid to purchase equipment from Israeli manufacturers. According to CRS, “no other recipient of U.S. military assistance has been granted this benefit.” By all accounts the United States has given more money to Israel than to any other country. The Congressional Research Service’s conservative estimate of total cumulative US aid to Israel from 1949 through 2015 is $127.4 billion (not adjusted for inflation). The Persian (Iranian) King, Cyrus, donated tons of money from his own coffres to the (ruling class) Jews when he allowed them to return to Judea, part of it to built fortification, not just the Temple. 5 months later, it is shocking how BOTH sides in the US are bought by the Jewish lobby. Democrats and Republicans are at odds on virtually every topic. But on Israel, there is strangely near ZERO dissent among the entire political class in the US. And it isn't because US public is anything near monolithically pro-Israel. Public opinion is far more balanced than that, and there are vocal and angry pro-Palestinian protests daily. Yet, never has the gulf between the political elite and street opinion been wider.
