We captured what a trap-jaw ant mandible strike against a finger looks like in super slow-motion! It doesn't hurt, don't worry. We explain why in the video!

@@micah3331 "What does your age have to do with this?" Things have changed so much. When I was in elementary school personal computers were a couple decades in the future. They brought a television into class so we could watch broadcasts of of early manned space shots. The only other "video" was a literal film projector; the quality was poor and it wasn't done often. Well made video like what they have here seems like a great way to engage and teach. Also knowledge has expanded quite a bit.

I hope it's been documented and I'm just an uneducated layman, but it seems like these ants use their antenna/feelers to find out if it's a fellow colony mate, or an intruder/aggressor/prey/the ground. See 1:32 as an example of the ant investigating your finger with it's feelers, and when it didn't recognize you, the hair trigger pulled. At 2:45 you can also see the antenna/feelers touching the ground first, and when the hair trigger touches the ground it immediately snaps like a trap. At 3:22 you can see the ant withdraw the feelers and move ahead to let the jaw trigger hairs clamp on the unapproved object. This is fascinating and I really appreciate your work.

Can we all appreciate how good of quality this video is without any tryhard techniques to make the viewers have to watch the whole video? The first thing you saw was the answer to the question, the secondthing was him saying the answer to then question, then the video continued with stuff i never thought was so damn interesting! Man, this is probably the video on KZfaq to deserve to be watched in full length the most. I enjoyed every split second of it even tho i am not really into all that so much.

I had an unpleasant encounter with an odontomachus some years ago, in South America. I woke up to its stinging my finger. Then I placed it in a small glass container and saw it trying to get out. I heard its jaws snapping against the container walls, sounding like a click. I had never seen anything like that before. If you see one of those, do not step on them. It will stink!
