Does This Whisky Live Up To The Hype? Maclean's Nose Blended Scotch Whisky Review

There has been a lot of buzz and hype around this bottle of whisky for more reasons than just one. The Maclean's Nose Blended Scotch Whisky recently garnered big praise when it was named Ralfy's Whisky of the year for 2024. Back in 2023 it was my top Blended Scotch of the year, narrowly beating out the TB/BSW from Thompson Bro's. It's remarkable that this whisky has everyone talking about a Blended Scotch Whisky, rather than Single Malt. But what is most remarkable might just be the price performance to value ratio. This Blended Scotch Whisky is brought to us by the Independent Bottler Adelphi, the owners of the Ardnamurchan Distillery. Why that is important is that the majority of the whisky in this blend is malt whisky from the Ardnamurchan Distillery and you can taste the influence it has on this blend. Maclean's Nose is bottled at 46% ABV, is Non-chill filtered, has no colour added and is matured in a combination of ex-Bourbon and Sherry casks. But just how good is this whisky? Does it live up to the hype or come up short of expectations? How does it compare to the Ardnamurchan A/D Release Single Malt Scotch Whisky? If nothing else, the level of transparency (ala Compass Box, etc) is just exactly what we nerds are looking for. So many blended Scotches are just 20% good stuff and 80% cheap grain filler. A touch of good quality grain just to fill out mostly malts is a different idea. And at the price they're going for is well worth it.

Nailed it. Compass Box kinda showed the way, set it up for those coming next to knock it down. I have alot of time for those that are following this format. High Malt content is a must. Like you said, price is right too. Cheers Sugar Kitty! 🥃

Yeah, I keep forgetting I have a Adelphi Private stock open. I should put them head-to-head. But then I'd have drink blends and you know my stance on that XD Good video! Glad to see you keeping going =D

C$50 Alberta a good price. I pay 70% more in Hong Kong but still an acceptable price and value. Sounds like your getting your voice back! Good whisky better review!

Yeah, $50 is an excellent price. Unfortunate that it's more but it's encouraging to hear that you're able to get it in Hong Kong as well! Slowly but surely with the voice. And strangely enough, I was watching hockey highlights yesterday of a game between Hong Kong and North Korea. Random lol. Cheers eh! 🥃

Nice one Matt! I've not tried this one before but if I'm being honest I'm not super excited about it either. If it comes my way sure I'll give it a shot but with so many whiskies out there and in my cabinet I hardly see myself reaching to this one over and over again. Yeah I hear you Sertug. I think that's why I landed on it being a bottle I wouldn't replace. I can see the charm, but will I got to this often enough over my other bottles or even over Ardnamurchan AD? It's a fair question. Can't deny the Price/Performance ratio is great. Hey Matt, I have no experience with Maclean's nose yet but I picked up Ardnamurchan AD recently. It's a bit young, hits on a lot notes for my palate. Yeah it is more money in Ontario as usual but at least some bottles showed up here. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts on Maclean's. I think I will wait it out. Cheers!

Hey Matt great review and channel! Wondering if you’ve had the Compass Box Glasgow Blend and how this compares? I love the CB blend, it’s got a hit of peat and the profile seems similar to this MacLean’s Nose. Cheers!

Thanks Mark, I really appreciate the feedback. I had the Glasgow Blend a few years ago and I did enjoy that Blend, I'd say more so than the Artist Blend. I'd say the big difference for me is how spirit forward, and mineralic with a touch of salinity the Maclean's Nose is. The Glasgow Blend is, from my memory, a decent comparable. Cheers Mark! 🥃

Unfortunately, I don't like most Ardnamurchan (the exception being the Paul Launois), so I don't really like Maclean's Nose either; I'll stick with the Thompson Brothers TB/BSW for blended in that price/quality bracket...

Great review & honest one too....Now W.O.T.Y. 2024 ? No way, it's too soon & I'm sure there' ll be better whiskies released this year. W.O.T.Y. 2023 then ? (makes more sense), for me yes, but only in my Blended whisky (all countries) category & also ok in the "best value" one too...but in 2023, if you've seen my 2 parts "unending" Highlights of the Year video, you'll notice a bunch of greater whiskies released imho (starting by an indie SC of Ardnamurchan, btw !) & especially a stratospheric French one which completely kicked out the Scots, for example...and everyone else too...(not value wise, mind you, I gave a red flag price wise to the shop "storepicking" it, otherwise I'll already have the bottle on board, believe me). Now if I had a bottle of this Maclean's nose on hand, I might be able to evaluate it better than I do now, so we'll see...Cheers !

It is a solid whisky, no doubt and very capable amongst it's like class of value or affordable Blended Scotch whiskies. But for me as well, it is not my pick for a whisky to represent this year. I do know Ralfy puts alot of thought into his "Whisky For The Year" selections and with this one it seems he was highlighting an affordable but quality bottle of whisky with cost of living and inflation up. Maclean’s is certainly hard to beat on value. I paid $35 in California. That’s significantly cheaper than what I’d pay for other craft presented blends from compass Box or Thompson Bros. It wouldn’t supplant my favorite budget Single Malt (Benromach 10 @ $40-$45) which is clearly not craft presented. I’m an unabashed Benromach Fanboy though. Whisky of The Year? A bit of hyperbole methinks, but to each their own. Cheers.

$35 USD is undoubtedly a fantastic price. But I am fully there with you on the Benromach 10 at that price. I'm on my 3rd bottle of Benromach 10 and will continue to replace it. Strong take on the W.O.T.Y. topic too. Cheers Tim! 🥃
