For me personally, the song is addictive and fun and gets better with each listen. I've listened to it about 50 times already, so for me it has lived up to the band's reputation and more. It's such a beautiful song to me.

Answering Champ, yes. Hearing Wave's take on the key changes does improve my appreciation of the song. I like the song from the first listen, but after watching your reactions, the value of my liking it gets better. And it's not only for this song, or this band, but my appreciation for music in general. Damn, even for other things in life! Thanks to you guys, now I listen to a piece of music with more complete involvement, emotional and intellectual. Now I pursue "high-resolution" understanding and enjoyment of everything! thank you, Gaijin Guys!

About Saiki holding it together when the instrumentation plays somethig different (Yolo is a perfect example) , Kanami has said that Saiki is perfect at keeping the tempo so I'm sure that gives Kanami the freedom to compose counter melodies

I loved Unleash!!!!! But to add a note about how I feel about the, “Sound”, that Different, Sense, and now Unleash!!!!! has, I only meant the slight whinie sound that only the anime connected songs seem to have. BUT! I do really love Unleash!!!!!

Saiki starts very high and slides into the first note of each phrase (in the first two verses, at least). Very different. Have I ever heard that in a rock song before? Also, her "I am losing my mind" has sooo much attitude. What a great front for a great band. The guitar tones in the first verse sound like old-school Fender to me - single-coil through a silver face or something. The Ventures. Surf guitar. But when Kanami goes to the processed sound, she is trying to invoke the feelings they had at the time. Fear. Worry. Tension. It sounds uncomfortable because it WAS uncomfortable. Aside and credit to Wikipedia: On This Day - April 16 1962 "The English rock band the Beatles fired their drummer Pete Best, replacing him with Ringo Starr" Liverpudlians are incensed that some random Wikipedia editor thinks The Beatles are "English".

Mincho is insane. That's how she writes. Complete insanity. But freakin' brilliant. I do hope they put a music intro at start of Unleash!!!!! live just like they did with Play. Play was much shorter on studio version. Live they started Play with a musical conversation between the instruments. From what I understand Dan-dan, di-di, dan dan means little by little. Do you guys know? Each member of the band has the capability to grab you and they all use that capability to the max. Band-Maid is not special. Band-Maid is super special.

I think the song is under too much analysis. In the end I have almost heard an argument and the opposite in the same thread. It looks like Sense, it's better/worse than Sense, it has nothing to do with Sense. It's a change of direction for their music, it's the same as a couple year ago. The riffs are too prog/hyper-produced, the riffs are wild hard rock. It's anime music, it's not anime music. I think, in the end Band Maid is an 80/20 band (their music, whatever it is, always attracts 80% of their listeners who are in front of the other 20%) and most of their fans end up changing between percentage after or before some point of the trip. And changing in the next album again... For my part, I stopped worrying a long time ago and let myself go. Somewhere along the way their music always catches me. This band is writing new music every year for nine years. Every f_cking new year. How many bands do you know so prolific and with that 80/20 percentage for so long? Relax guys. It's Band Maid doing what they do best. Turn on the tap of good music and let it run.

Good points. Bands should evolve. And barring a lack of creative ambition, they will evolve. Band-Maid has managed to continually do so while improving as musicians and maintaining a sound so unique that they retain most of their fanbase and gain new ones with every album.

Beyond loving the energy and the video, it took me a couple days to take it all in and since then my musical appreciation for it keeps growing. I feel like it mixes old-school chunky rock, catchiness, and complex progressive stuff amazingly well - so well it's confusing people until they figure out they don't have to choose just one. Or maybe some want to just hear one at a time. I suspect that the people who listened to it just three times before dismissing it as unworthy are, ironically, largely the same ones perpetually complaining about how modern music is shallow and superficial. Do they want instantly-accessible simplified ear-candy, or not? I do wish Kanami would parallel blend and/or separately EQ her pitch-shifter output signal sometimes, though.

I am a huge Band Maid fan, everybody who has seen my posts knows this. I have listened to the song over 10 times, my feelings on the song remain the same on listen 10 as listen 1. Its a good song, a middle pack Band Maid song (which is better then a lot of bands best songs) but it does not even crack the top 25 for me. The video was really cool. I will say that I agree with Champ that many fans expect the hooky choruses that are super prevalent before UW. There has been a chunk of band maid fans that have not been as happy with their recent songs because they lack the hookiness of previous albums.

I agree with "middle pack" for Band-Maid, but not that this should be a disappointment. Just thinking of some songs with MVs that don't crack the top 25 for me (Thrill, Real Existence, Before Yesterday, Non-fiction Days, Don't You Tell Me, Choose Me, Daydreaming, Bubble, Glory, Rinne, After Life, Sense), they are all incredible songs that I would very happily recommend to someone who is new to Band-Maid. If it wasn't in my top 80 Band-Maid songs, then I'd be disappointed.

Other songs have moved in and out of my top 10, but those two have remained constant for the past 3 years. For me, I was not disappointed in Unleash, but I am a little disappointed that they have latched onto this more busy/chaotic sound. If the entire EP is all the newer sound (chaotic/busy) they have been stuck on recently, then I will be disappointed.

So, I've been listening to rock since the 60s. I've listen to every genre being created. I like pretty much all of Band Maid's various styles but I like the more progressive stuff best. Unleash is great. Unseen World is brilliant. Actually, my only real complaint with Band Maid is that Kanami is often buried in the mix, and that must be an attempt to tone down songs for that part of the audience that wants to stay in their comfort zone. To me, Band Maid is creating a wonderful new music -- rock for the chaotic new age -- something few bands have the creativity to accomplish. For them to sit back in their comfortable past would be tragic. Can you picture 45 year old Kanami and MISA on a nostalgia tour? I would throw up. Before I die, I'd like to see them spawn dozens of bands that are breaking everybody's minds while being hooky and accessible enough to reach people everywhere.

I get the feeling that Unleash's MV ended with them on the plateau and the next MV, "from now on," will continue the story. The new promo images shows them on a rocky mountain and that's probably where they filmed their next MV. So it could be a sequel. Of course this is speculation.

This is too superficially simple to be one of my very favorites, but after more plays this is dead-ass a “song of the summer”-they meant it to be a big fat hit, so if this was put on US radio somehow, I’d be perfectly happy. But then on Reddit, someone put the instrumental track of this out and it sounds totally psychedelic! It’s a completely different song lol

It’s just this band never makes a bad song. It’s incredible that they just consistently make good songs after good songs. Some of my favorite bands I grew up with always had songs I didn’t like.. skip songs. They had albums I didn’t like. Everyone just accepted that.. you take the few good songs from sn album and ignore the rest. Every album of Bandmaid is great… you can play it strait through and you are never bored once.

I thought Unleash was alright/good on the first listen, but it got better with each listen. I actually felt that this song sounded more like a World Domination song than Unseen World aside from the fast high pitched harmonizer guitar sound after the chorus and end of the song. Actually... it kind of reminds me of the synth part in "One and Only" on World Domination. I mean they did say the new EP will be World Domination Part 2. This song sounds nothing like "Sense" to me. Anime would have taken months to produce, so probably written at the same time as the Sense trilogy. Could just imagine them saying at the time " doing all this for others, why don't we just do our own". Champ: Regarding general listeners (being one) and complexity, it's what keeps me listening. Neil Peart paraphrased quote "people can sense that care has been taken". The only issue I can see that might inhibit popularity is the denseness that they've went for since UW ... most people don't listen through headphones so they'll only hear the surface and make their judgements on that. I persevere through songs I don't quite get purely because I know they're great. Will these songs be in my "most played list", no because I'll be playing Moratorium or Wonderland or Blooming or Freezer etc because I'll mostly be listening to them in the car or though shitty laptop speakers but I'll still be able to distinguish everything. That said, they are developing and should develop in the way that they see fit ... so I'm sticking around

And why don't you talk about those who love the song. I dig the new direction sound. I want a new direction in every future BAND-MAID album! I don't understand those who complain about the lack of hooks. In "Unleash!!!!!" there are hooks everywhere: the chorus is catchy as hell, the "Dan Dan D Di Dan Dan" is in your head after just the first listening. The punk rock guitar riff in the first verse is catchy, the galloping metal riff of the second verse is catchy, Saiki vocal melodies are catchy. Her "ahhh ah ah ah" between each sentence of the verses is catchy, the "rap" part and the vocal melody right after is catchy in the bridge. I don't know, maybe there's too much vocal effects and sound effect layered other everything that makes this a less catchy track for some people who maybe prefer when the song has much "space" like some older ones. I'm sure people are going to love the new songs after listen to them live, that's where BAND-MAID songs are alive ;)

First and foremost, what I have is a champagne problem and I'm very well aware. My only quibble with Unleash!!!!! is that peddle sound is overwhelming. I don't want my favorite guitarist to play her guitar and borderline keyboard sounds to come out. It's like synth-era Rush, which created good, maybe even great songs, but GD I don't want one of the all-time great power trios leaning so hard on a synth sound. It's a waste of a limited resource. We seldom get all the Kanami we want, so when she's using that pedal, it's like using gold to create the foil you wrap your potato in when you bake it, and then dispose of.

All musical artists do their job to earn money otherwise they could not continue to do so. The only acceptable criticism is that it is too compressed. What I see is that it affects a lot of people and that's the goal. (600K in 7 days). Great. It's a Band Maid touch song. Catchy and terribly addictive. A banger. Opinion time so hear me out about the Sense/Screaming comparison: Screaming very much has the flight of the bumblebees guitar riffs and licks in it, but the entire song feels more measured. Screaming feels like it has more moments to catch your breath. And that bumblebees guitar tone is only prominent during those parts and in the chorus is buried deep in the recording (then reappears post chorus). I don't care for the guitar tone in Sense even compared to Screaming, but is more prominent throughout especially during the chorus and is pretty much going at the top of the recording throughout. Beyond that I think Sense's chorus and Saiki's vocals just make it sound like anime metal (I don't want to say Kawaii because the vocals aren't cutesy). Now I don't know shit about A or E minor or anything, but I can tell you the vocal melody just isn't catchy like Screaming to me. I can hum Screaming and enjoy doing so; I simply can't or don't enjoy humming along to Sense. I didn't know Sense was literally an anime theme song until well after the fact, but it had always had that vibe to me where Screaming felt very metal but never evoked anime at least nowhere near the extent of Sense. I don't watch anime either, so it's not something I am swayed toward by following that trend in music. Also it should be noted that while I do like Screaming, and like the Maiko version more, it is far from my favorite Maid song, so offering an inferior version of a mid-level Band-Maid song doesn't appeal to me as much as an opportunity compared to my favorite Band-Maid sound, which is the JBI-era rock or WD-era tracks. There is an amount of opportunity cost too. In this case, Three anime metal tracks on the Sense single were the only original tracks we got for the better part of a year. If they can only produce so much content, I'm going to be selfish and hope it's a mix of the stuff I like the most instead of all 3 from my least favorite subgenre of theirs. THAT ALL SAID, I do think Unleash is way better than either of those two and my only gripe is I wish they would get rid of the two prominent lasers on a chalkboard guitar sections. Straight guitar would be straight fire. Just my critical but constructive opinion. Cheers.

I was ho-hum on the song the first listen through, and after many more listens I’ve figured out why: the storyline of the video does sync up with the song in my mind. I enjoy listening to the song much more without the video. The video is super cool style wise, and I love all the Easter eggs and the way they brought the band to life in anime form, but when the song enters its ending riff and the video is skimming along the earth before the ending shot, my mind expects something more from the story. My experience of it is that it ends too abruptly, which on first listen I attributed to the song being poorly paced. But after just listening to the song, it’s definitely the video that’s messing with me. Knowing that, I can enjoy the video more, but I still feel disappointed at the ending, whereas with just the audio I feel it ends just right.

They made sure to hit key story elements where it was appropriate in the song but not enough to be cohesive on first viewing. The latter half of the video especially seems like they called it in. The song is great, the video is okay on the whole, but they are both better in isolation. However, I hope they continue to try these kinds of videos though. For all my gripes about it, it at least succeeds in highlighting the distinctions of each member and it captures their likeness really well.

What this most reminds me of is anisong stuff that independent artists were putting up on Niconico video sharing service about a decade ago. This genre of the song is "anisong rock". Its is a genre of rock whose style and production is directly associated with anime. Much of the stuff like this on Niconico was a mix of EDM and rock. Band Maid definitely pushes this style heavily toward rock but you can hear the EDM influence in the syth work and vocal melodies in the background, also the rhythm of the lead vocals.

The trouble with "fan service" is that you can end up compromised, because you aren't progressing. The Beatles couldn't keep playing I Wanna Hold Your Hand for ten years. Look at how stale AC/DC became.

lol yeah whoever said there's no hooks is high. There's plenty of hooks here. And as an idiot with no knowledge of music theory, one of the best attributes of Band-Maid is their pop sensibilities and having those catchy hooks.

I feel like Sense and Unleash!!!!! Is like Van Halen 1984. You got a few albums under your belt, then you try to "polish" stuff. And don't get me wrong, I love 1984, but Unleash feels like Jump to me did when it came out. A little less raw, a little less rockin', a bit more "commercial." Love the video and concept, but, at least so far, the song hits below probably 20 others.

That's part of the dilemma I have about them wanting to dominate the world. They have to write songs that sell - popular and commercial to get there. I'm familiar with Japanese anime metal songs but Band-Maid still sound different and unique.

Interesting convo. guys. Unleash!!!!! is probably my favorite since Conqueror came out. I was thinking "Band-Maid's got their groove back" haha. IDK why, but its a certain "groovy" sound they had I felt was not their in many of their songs since Different. Most of Unseen World had to grow on me over multiple listens. Unlease had me right away ;)

For me it's the kind of song that Band-Maid does from time to time that I just can't get behind. It's full of energy and probably a blast to lose yourself to in a live concert but I can't help but think they're just throwing too many things in there like they're trying to overwhelm your senses with loads of things happening at once. It's like they've incorporated 3 songs into one. It feels a bit messy to me and it's definitely not the type of Band-Maid song I like to listen to the most. The clip is great though and definitely not a bad song at all if you're a Band-Maid fan because as Alan stated nobody can deny it's got a Band-Maid footprint all over it.

The first two verses are perfect. The melody of the chorus is really good, but the re-use of “Showtime” is distracting and I wish they didn’t go there. Just pick any other two-syllable word and it’s better. The jazzy bridge is absolutely amazing, one of their best. The harmonizer pedal leads change the feel of the song in a really bad way, unfortunately. A straight guitar tone would have made this song one of my favorites, and I’m really hoping they ditch the effect if they play it live. Dan Dan Di Di Dan Dan is a nice hook and saves the song for me. Saiki is just fantastic throughout - one of her best vocal performances.

Miku actually re-use more phrases in her lyrics than you probably notice. It occasionally disturb me slightly but the lyrics have to fit the rhythm and the storyline and the word does fits the context perfectly. What sounds messy - I initially felt the same, but then I learned more about the story behind the video and the use of the particular sound started to make more sense.

There are a lot of people that do not appreciate musical greatness. They have been conditioned by the modern music industry to think that two chords and a mono-tone autotuned voice is quality music. Those people don't like Band-Maid, Vivaldi, Sinatra, or Marty Robbins. That's why us older guys (and musicians/songwriters) love Band-Maid, Nemophila, Hanabie, Asterism, etc., because we remember and appreciate when music was fresh and original and not the product of a cookie cutter industrial system.

Too much going on for me. I had high expectations. I hope they don't play this when they come to town. Because then they would be cutting out a good sound. But I can't wait to hear others.

Then do it yourself if it's so easy. Write stuff you wanna listen. Comments such as yours are given in bad faith do nothing than provoke useless fights. Go away if you don't like the band. Some day they will talk about the stuff you care, untill then good day.
