Does Vertical Video Work?

Күн бұрынI'd wager that all of us have encountered some form of vertical video as non-widescreen aspect ratios are slowly taking over the digital video landscape. But what can we learn from this new format? And are there times when vertical video is appropriate-even better-than widescreen?
In the winter of 2015, my good friend David and I had a deep dive discussion into the function, merits, and potential future of vertical video (and God help us, film).

Amazing video! Even what you shared about the film grammar and language was super useful Wade! To add I think it requires more skill, intention and anticipation when using gimbal movement to know where and what to focus on, just like a sports camera op filming a golf ball, or tracking a soccer ball, our eye-line/gaze needs more thought and slower movements. The rule of thirds is thinner, but now the golden ratio can be used in portrait. Would it mean rule of thirds is instead now only 2 converging points rather than 4? (When filming symmetrical?)

Some excellent points! We made this video back in 2015 and had no idea just how popular vertical video would get. But it’s amazing to see new techniques and methods develop, like the ones you’ve listed. Thanks for watching!
