Uhhhh....No 5200 on the tank securing screws going into the stringers? No bueno! I just went through the issue of the previous owner of my boat having replaced the fuel sender and just used 2-part epoxy, instead of installing threads into the tank to match the new sender. The holes were already there and pretty large, so they skipped the creation of new threads and affixed it with the epoxy. Fast forward to 2021, where I keep having water in fuel issues. When I pressure tested the tank, found the sender was leaking, so I removed it and installed Riv-nuts and affixed it the proper way. This channel has been a big help in me being able to diagnose and correct this issue. I plan to post a KZfaq video on how I corrected it as a give-back to the community! Thank You Aaron!

New here and got to say u guys r brilliant and doing a good job. Not sure if we can ask any queries here with rusted, leaking fuel tanks or say putting a new gas tank in to VEC technology Glastron SSV 170. Can we cut open the fibre glass deck floor and change the tank ? will it affect the boat stability since i am using 140 HP outboard. OR is it better switch to use portable gas tanks on deck area like gasoline bladders etc and forget abt rusted under deck gas tank. Thanks in advance !

If I redo any boat with a gelcoat or similiar coating floor, those type of mats used for the fuel tank are what I'm using in the walkway. Much more cheaper and less hassle than dealing with adding Snap On carpet. Carpet just seems like a never ending hassle.

Guess when you'll find out you have a sour fuel tank ? Just bounce that boat around on a rough day and if your filter plugs up, you have a problem. Always carry a spare filter and a plastic bag to catch spills. Make sure you shut everything down and air out the boat well. Carry an outboard tank, bulb and hose until you know. You can connect to the carb. ? and hand pump your way home, at least you could. Now I imagine the fuel pump will be the point of connection.

Putting the fuel vent midship seams logical to me. Our Supra wake boat has the fill and vent rear starboard side. So if you fill it up full while on the trailer, gas shoots out the vent during bow rise. The hoses both connect to the back of the tank as well. I have been wondering how difficult it would be to relocate the vent and I now see it’s not that difficult at all. Thanks man!!
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 4 жыл бұрын
Oh no, that sucks! I don't know why they didn't think about that when they put that boat together lol Yeah, it's not the bad to relocate, you really want to get in and inspect before you start though, sometimes there can be complications with the stringers! Just make sure you can run the hose where ever you want to put it and maybe it would be an easy Saturday morning project :)

I just replaced both my fill hose and vent hose. I measured the old fill hose and cut the new one to length. But looking at it installed it appears to dip below the tank fill inthe bilge before connecting to the tank. This appears to be why I was having issues when fueling. So should the hose stay above the tank? Looks like fuel could sit in the hose and cause it to fail
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 4 жыл бұрын
I dont know about the hose failing because of the fuel, but the issue with filling the tank would definitely connect with the hose being below the tank. That dip will fill up and cause filling issues for sure

I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge. When an aluminium tank is fabricated, what's the procedure for cleaning it out before installation? I had a new tank installed, have run about 70 gallons through it. My Racor filter is now so clogged with aluminum shavings it's starving the boat of fuel. Not good obviously. I'm very curious to hear your perspective on my issue.

I know this has nothing to do with the present video but is there a way to adjust the cold idle or start idle speed on a 2005 Yamaha 250 hpdi? It was shutting off repeatedly on starting, which seems to be not so uncommon. I pulled the vst off and cleaned it. Now it starts and runs but runs at about 500 rpms cold, while the other motor runs at 700-800 rpms when cold after starting. Once they warm up, they sync up at 6-700 rpms.
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 4 жыл бұрын
No, there's not really an adjustment for that, though the TPS can be adjusted, most likely it's not the problem though. HPDI's can be pretty touchy sometimes, I'm guessing you've changed the spark plugs, since you cleaned the VST. After it warms up it runs fine, hmmm. The OX-66's would run high when the thermostats would stick, but that's not the same for the HPDI. It would be nice to put it on a computer and see what all of the sensors are saying and what the fuel pressure is. After it warms up it runs fine for the rest of the day?
@raybates3119
@raybates3119 4 жыл бұрын
@@BornAgainBoating Yes, it runs like a champ the rest of the day with no issues at all. We routinely go out to some barrier islands about 15 miles offshore and stay for several hours. Even when it was having the shutting off problem when cold, it would start fine the rest of the day once you got it to idle after that first start. That's what got me to thinking it was a pressure issue between the diaphragm pumps and the high pressure pump which led me to cleaning the vst. I should have mentioned I replaced the low pressure diaphragms when I first started trying to fix the original problem of it not staying running for the first few attempts at a cold start after sitting for several days. I have not replaced the plugs since they were replaced recently. I was planning on changing plugs, cleaning the injectors, changing mystery filters and the other normal servicing this winter. This isn't really a big issue, it's more of a curiosity thing. The biggest mystery to me is when I cleaned the vst, there wasn't really anything to clean. The pump filter was clean, etc. I pulled the pump and hooked it up to power to verify it was running and when I put it together and back on the boat, it would crank and idle when before you would have to constantly squeeze the primer bulb for a couple of minutes on that engine to keep it idling. I'm sure it's some sensor somewhere and I have learned that hpdi's seem to be very touchy. If I get it figured out, I'll shoot you an e-mail and let you know what it was.

I was always told never use rubber under an aluminum fuel tank. Always use starboard. The rubber which is essentially carbon mixed in a salt water with aluminum creates a corrosive environment. Rubber is made with carbon, which is cathodic to aluminum and can result in galvanic corrosion. Therefore, you should never use rubber strips near your aluminum fuel tank.

Yes I disconnected the trim plug and the harness the fuse did not blow. Plugged in the trim plug and did not blow and was able to trim engine up and down. The dealer came down after I told him where the shirt is coming from and he took the panel mounted DTS controller apart with the 4 screws and plugged it in an it didn’t short. Put everything back together and it is fine now. Can imagine what happened. He said those screws were a little loose when he took them apart. When I got down to the boat he already had it apart and plugged in so I could not see exactly what he did but that it’s working now. Thank you for your knowledge and helping point me in right direction to diagnose it. Without you I would never got that far. Thank You !!!

@@BornAgainBoating My family has been in the aluminum business for over 60 years and I would not recommend putting any cheap carbon rubber against aluminum, the reason marine hoses and fuel lines are expensive is because they are made of butyl rubber and not the cheap carbon rubber which causes galvanic corrosion. Carbon is a conductor and allows current to flow that coupled with crevice corrosion will rot out a tank very quickly everywhere the rubber contacts it. You are better off 5200ing plastic strips directly to the bottom of the tank and then 5200ing that to the tank space. David Pasco has a good explanation. www.yachtsurvey.com/fueltank.htm Placing aluminum on cheap rubber mats issues are coming its only a matter of time.

If it was me. I would have sprayed the whole tank with zink chromate to prevent corrosion like the old one.

Do you ground the tank to the ground negative side of the battery or just ground the fill to the tank? Thanks love the channel!!
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Both, you want to ground the tank itself as well as ground the fill port. Usually you just run them to your ground block where all of the boats grounds tie together.

No, I've been on the fence about that for a long time now. I've seen tanks that were coated and the water get in under the coating and basically trap the water on the tank! Then I've seen uncoated tanks last just as long as the coated. It's a catch-22, the prepping and coating process has to be perfect for it to really work. Most places down here use a stuff called gluvit. It's an epoxy coating.

Never use rubber material under an aluminum fuel tank because rubber contains carbon, which is cathodic to aluminum and will cause galvanic corrosion. This fuel tank replacement is sloppy at best sorry to say.
