I had a Bison who just didn't know how to grab, so what I did was just turtle down until they did something punishable, punish it, and go back to turtling. Literally just didn't know how to grab. the thing about gimmicks its very true, im learning to play on stick so i started from a very low rank and following brian´s advice about not jumping so much and anti air any one who does, that´s how i won all my matches today, simply anti airing and having some hit confirms if i get a hit, just a couple of hits but, people who does gimmicks really never adapted, thanks, your videos help me a lot

When I started playing seriously in 2018 I remember being in high silver trying to crack gold and being like wow this person got carried to gold by Abigail and was actually salty about it. A few years later im higher diamond with my main and a few characters on smurfs at super plat and that Abigail I thought was carried is still hardstuck in Gold because they were a gimmick and never improved as a player.

Yeah, who carries? I started playing SFV in december 2019 and picked Nash. Ranked up to ultra bronze and got stuck. A friend of mine suggested Ed, because of obvious reasons and I ranked up to gold league. Within months I was totally sick of playing Ed its kinda boring to win matches by landind 10 flickers and 3 Psycho Upper EX or leting VT2 rob the match. I just stop playing the game because I didnt wanna lose LP and didnt want do play Ed either. So, in one of brian_F's videos I realized the LP and ranked and all this shit doesnt matter if im not having fun. So i switched back to Nash, who I love playing and ranked down to super silver and ultra silver, but at least Im having fun playing and, most importantly, Im having fun labbing. So, thanks Brian_F. You really helped me see the big picture.

These people wouldn’t be shit without there controllers. Try landing a REAL combo, blind folded, no pad/stick, legs cut off, fighting Abigail, tied down to a chair, starving, underwater. Then you can say yo not carried.

My abimagail definitely carries me. He's so simple yet so effective, and switching to other characters (other than maybe birdie), even if they are up a tier or two, makes me feel like i'm handicapped - normals become so stubby, have to put in more work to get same results, etc.

Yeah, I think it comes back to when someone says, "You just do the same thing over and over again, NOOB. GIT GUD." My response was always get good and learn how to block it then. If I find a weakness in your game, I'm going to exploit it. Period. If you don't know how to handle it, get better.

To add to what you're saying, if you're someone who plays the carrying card, I think it's important to reflect on where your enjoyment in fighting games comes from. If your enjoyment is purely winning, then you should probably just play the characters you claim are carrying players. If your enjoyment is honest footsies based, you should take less pride on the quantity of wins but rather the "quality" of wins. Maybe to my detriment, but I tend to shy away from top tier characters not out of some moral high ground but I've discovered I just have more fun winning with characters that have less bullshit. I know it means I need to work hard to get those wins because I have less abusable stuff, but that actual puzzle is something I really enjoy. If someone enjoys having really strong, abusable tools, I enjoy trying to work around those. I think reflecting on this is something that is missing from a lot of players.

Slightly off topic, but still in the realm of how people view fights and losing. I always tend to direct my attention and frustrations towards myself when something isn't going right for a fight. I'm the type to take 20 losses in a row against a player trying to figure out how to fight whatever keeps beating me. This is where I struggle the most with Street Fighter I think. Someone wins twice and i'm throw out, never to see them again. Battle lounge is an option but choices for rooms seems all over the place connection wise. I feel like this point in SFV's life it's difficult for new players to the series, at least for people like me who want to take those L's to learn. Seeing a rarely used character sucks because win or lose, i'm not gonna be able to get too much out of the few fights. Labbing is technically an option, but only if you own the character unless it's temporarily unlocked to try out. It's more of a me thing than it is a SFV thing, but it's still kinda frustrating.

On the hand, I feel like I generally agree with Brian's sentiment in this video. On the other hand, I can immediately think of three separate examples of where the character can and DOES carry people; including an example where the character was so bad he literally broke a Pro-level tournament immediately after his release.

Rethinking your understanding of fighting games really does do a lot for the learning process. At some point you gotta acknowledge that your appointment will do the "cheap" thing and you just have to respect it or you're gonna lose. You have a health bar too, the more you protect it the more your opponent has to work to get it down, and if you knock down Ken and eat a wake up DP every single time then yeah, his character is carrying them because your approach doesn't make them turn their brain on. Why would they over extend themselves by thinking when they just do a move and it works every time?

The gimmicky stuff reminds me of the Air Force football team in the 90s. They only ran the ball. Their offense was exclusively triple option run plays with their QB and three RBs. They won a lot of games because no team is set up to stop that offense. But when they played anyone in a bowl game or any amount of time to prepare and adapt, they got obliterated. They had no other plan. (literally. Their backup QB1 was their RB1 and their RB2 was their QB1)

The best argument against "But I dont want to be a pro player" is that approaching games in this way ensures a steady reward system for learning, which is essentially where the fun comes from. So if you want to have fun long term on a game, this is the best way to do it.

I think the problem is that most lower rank players (myself included) focus too much on things that high level players do. Having great footsies means shit if your opponent doesn't play footsies. If your opponent only jumps, wakes up with a DP and doesn't even block when you pressure him, you can simply body them and bait their reversals instead of playing it slow.
