I agree with everything you said but I don't agree with the high amount of bone you are feeding your small dog. Maybe a chicken foot a day (nails cut off) is fine but the whole chicken leg or pork neck bone a day is excess bone. I would cut back to two.a week tops.

Sorry, I was not clear in my concern about bone. My concern with your small dog eating a chicken leg plus daily is that that is too much bone not that it ups the statistical chance of him getting injured by a sharp bone. He could though get GI impaction from too much bone to meat ratio. Also the bones do wear the teeth so if has to eat too much of his rations as bone there will be some more wear. I'm with you on the importance of bones for a dogs dental and mental health we just differ in total amounts that are good per week. But, as we find in these discussions, there are different ways of doing things for different dogs and us owners know our own dogs best. @@treasuretrovel3816 he is 4 years old now i have zero concern about chicken bones after breaking up chicken quarters with a hatchet to make a mixed meat, organ, eggs and moderate vegetable and fruit grind. Turkey i would never feed a dog their bones, they are heavy and break into long splinters. Pork neck bones are perfect, they are soft and full of sinew and meat, keeps him busy, makes his jaw muscles strong and cleans his teeth. He loves chewing on beef bones but they are to hard and don't provide and cleaning benefit. Cooked bones are problematic raw bones are not. At 4 years if i were feeding him to much bone it would be obvious like his teeth were worn but that isnt the case with raw chicken and pork. In nature if a coyote or fox eats and animal they eat the whole thing or scavenge of of dead carcasses. There is far more skin with hide or feathers and bone than meat. So you can guarandamtee a rabbit for example is going to be a lot more bone than a chicken leg. You should feed them the majority of the meat in whole form just like they would eat it in nature.

The coughing was due to lingering irritation from the breathing tube. It could be that your vet or the tech who placed the tube was rough. Brush daily and feed a species appropriate diet with very little carb.

Dr. Karen Becker (on one of her many podcasts) or Dana Scott of Dogs Naturally (can't remember which of these experts) said that she strongly believes that all this unusual pancreatitis in pet dogs can be explained by the fact that kibble keeps their pancreas on the edge-- Too high a carb diet keeps the pancreas producing too much insulin round the clock which is a very bad state for a carnivore. Then, if the owner gives one extra bit of fat, something that would never normally upset the balance of a scavenging carnivore, the pancreas get inflamed. It is almost always cooked fat that initiates the bout of pancreatitis. Pan drippings, bacon or other high temp cooked fats are transified and not as digestible as raw fat. Humans can handle these altered fats but dogs cannot. Transition your dog gradually to a raw diet. If you don't want to use thawed, commercial frozen and balanced products then you can use freeze dried raw. I alternate commercial, freeze dried raw, frozen raw and low temp, home cooked recipes. All very low carb like the canine ancestral diet When making eggs for your dog, you do not want to cook the yolk-- I give sunny side up eggs at least once a week and on some days cooked, sockeye salmon, all very high fat, nutritious, ancestral foods. My slim dog gets chunks of brie sometimes to the horror of my veterinarian. My dogs have always eaten this way but kibble fed dogs must be transitioned to natural foods gradually. Despite my dogs' ability to handle a healthy amount of fat, I never give them pan drippings because once I did and one got very sick.

Dr Karen Becker and Rodney Habib have posted a couple of complete recipes . But, my favorite channel is The Canine Nutritionist. Cam, the creator is a dog food expert and he demonstrates the preparation of many meals. He and I do not believe that every meal and bite must be balanced but rather balance of nutrients over the course of a week. In Dr. Becker's recipes she is trying to get all the daily nutrients into the recipe so mixtures of sardine and beef and veggies and bone meal plus an egg..... My dogs don't prefer these goos. I might feed sunny side up eggs for breakfast and beef mixed with veggies one day with no added calcium supplement and then feed a raw meaty duck neck the next day with a sardine. Sometimes I grind everything together to make a complete balanced recipe and freeze aliquots and sometimes our dogs just get the meat the humans are having. I am a biochemist with a great interest in dog nutrition but do not claim to be an expert and would never presume to write recipes for dogs and publish them on the internet. Another good source is Dana Scott of Dogs Naturally Magazine. All of these experts in addition to Dr. Jones are the ones you should follow. @@robrenhar

It’s fine. My dog is 60 lbs, she gets a raw chicken wing every day or so, I gave my Lhasa raw chicken necks - she lived to 16 1/2 🐶🫶🏼

Paw of Prey channel owner, Mariah is a cat and dog food expert and she expresses concern for too much thyroid tissue if just using necks as the bone supply. Us small dog owners are very limited in safe sizes of bone. I cut the tops of the necks off to try to mitigate that theoretical risk. the top is the tapered end. The problem is that chicken necks are so small that cutting off the top with poultry shears dramatically shortens it. So, I tend to use more duck necks. In this case, I find that I also want to cut off the thick bottom as well fearing it to be too hard for my 13 pound dog with his little mouth. My other poodle is the size of Toula and has a big enough jaw to handle the base of a big duck neck. Turkey necks way too hard for small dogs. Mariah and others recommend alternating whole chicken necks with wings (she says to cut off the thick, drum stick portion for very small dogs). Some also say to cut off the pointed, wing tip. Chicken feet are good at cleaning teeth. Because they contain more cartilage than bone they do not substitute wholly for calcium balance in a raw, home prepared diet. All these bones, of course, must be fed raw and can balance out boneless raw meat or gently cooked boneless meat.

Adding coconut oil to their food(just a little)will help pass hairballs. Not to much , too often as it can cause diariah. Throwing up is not normal for cats, hairballs are.Stop giving them the elm. Regular grooming (daily by you) will help. You could also get them a self grooming tree. It's like a bent bristle brush for them to rub on, help get rid of some of the loose fur. If you have long hair cats , they are higher maitenance.

​​@@carolcole570You still have to do your own research. 100 mils per 10 pounds, "up to" 4 times a day. Should resolve within 2-4 days. This not something I'd do long term. You should look at other non medicinal methods. Throwing up is not something our cats should be doing. Hacking up hairballs is normal. Again better grooming can cut that back significantly. I'm not saying the elm won't help but, when both your cats are throwing up fluids maybe you should cut the dose or try something else. All that throwing up(of striaght fluids) can dehydrate them.

@@carolcole570cats only need a tiny pinch of slippery elm in my experience. You could open the capsule and just give them a tiny bit and I think they would be fine. I even only give my dog a tiny amount, I think when I tried giving the cats more it also made them sick but I can't recall exactly what happened. Good luck!!!!❤❤

Have you googled “ how can I lower my dogs potassium levels “. In my area there’s a vet raw dieth by Energique for diabetes. There is probably something like that in your area as well, or you can ask companies for advice . Try and work with this vet in lowering the glucose or ask a second opinion. Good luck

You are splitting hairs in my opinion. The amount of baking soda used to brush a dogs teeth is minimal. Green tea is not highly colored and does not stain teeth.

There is no "long run" with sodium bicarb. It is not a toxin that bioaccumulates in the tissues. It is alkaline and then gets neutralized. It breaks down into some sodium and carbonate ions, normal, non-toxic ions that are present in the body. You are not a chemist so you think everything is toxic. I'm a chemist so I know you are wrong. Certainly, I would not feed a dog a significant amount of backing soda simply because it would neutralize his stomach acid a bit temporarily and I am very much against upping the pH of the stomach even temporarily. I also use hydrogen peroxide on my dogs teeth. Shocked? breaks down into water and oxygen. I actually brush my dog's teeth twice a day (because I am such a good owner).@@skero7359

I also got the "whala" results when I started to give my dogs raw duck necks. My dogs are 13 and 20 pounds and I buy them frozen from Northwest Naturals. NN also sells packaged, frozen chicken necks and other bones. For small dog, I find that the necks are the safest and the crunchy vertebra seem to be the best for cleaning teeth. I cut the tops off with poultry shears to try to avoid excess thyroid tissue. Also for small dogs, chicken feet and wings are of a safe size. My dogs are too small for rib bones. All bone must be fed frozen and encased in meat. My dogs are fed a raw and gently cooked, meat and organ diet with some veggies but no carbs and I brush daily but still, that was not enough for one of them as he builds plaque rapidly. The raw meaty bones were what was missing.
