My miniature rat terrier does the same thing....love it.

Yeah, my little Minnie (11 lb. rat terrier) used to do the exact same thing until I explained to her who's boss. First I said in a loud voice "Who the FUCK you think you are??!!" And she continued growling when I reached for the bone... I totally knew she loved me, so I got down on my hands and knees as she got louder and louder, put my head right next to hers, grabbed the far end of the bone with my teeth, then pulled it from her mouth. Her bluff was called. She got up and walked away with her stubby tail between her legs, totally humiliated, but I gave her an "A" for the attempt. She never ever growled when I reached for her bone again because she knew who the boss was. God, do I miss that girl.

People who think this sort of thing is cute are the worst dog owners. They encourage reactive aggressive behavior by teasing the dog, and because he’s small, they think it’s funny and put it on KZfaq. It’s not funny. It gives the dog terrible messages. 1. I may take away your treat, or maybe I won’t. This makes the dog insecure and more aggressive. . 2. It’s ok for you to defy me and growl at me. This encourages the dog to believe that he is on equal footing with the owner, leading to more defiance and more aggression. When the dog bites a small child in the face, the owners will blame the child, ignoring the fact that they set the dog up for it. When the dog’s behavior becomes more reactive and more aggressive, the owners will try to rehome it, saying “I just don’t have the time.” Or they will keep it, but find it’s increased aggression less funny and adorable as years go by. If friends come over, the dog is put in a spare room by itself, increasing its social isolation. After it’s bitten a couple times, it will be put down. Sadly, the owners will NEVER realize that they are responsible. Owners that do this should be ashamed of themselves. They wouldn’t do this with a Rottweiler- they are doing it only because they think it’s funny to see a small dog react like this. It’s unfair to the dog.

You are teaching them to NOT TRUST the hand that feeds them. Teach them to release other things yes. I would tell mine "Let me have it please." Boom dropped it like hot potato. Food no way. Food is their survival instinct. Respectfully, You need dog training before owning any dogs.
