www.doghealthproblemsadvice.com - Heart Failure in Dogs may occur as a result of certain changes in how the heart pumps blood to the body. Sam Meisler DVM, a small animal veterinarian, discusses dog heart failure in terms of how it happens and what one can do to diagnose and treat heart failure in dogs.

I last my Buzo day before, He was diagnosed of CHF two years ago... As his suffering was increasing... He started to collapse and become uncoonscious... for a few seconds... We decided to put him to sleep as the doctor said there is no cure for his ailment. We had all the xrays, ecgs, blood pressure checked fortnightly for our Buzo. Tried to give him best possible treatment that was available. I wish there was a permanent cure for CHF in dogs, I miss him no end.

My Husky has just been diagnosed with GHF this morning, shes 9, after taking her to the vet to check on a cough shes had for a few weeks, she had an xray after the vet listened to her chest and her heart is very inflamed. Shes been prescribed Vetmedin twice daily, water tablets and anti-inflammatories. I'm totally gutted because shes my life.

Thank you for the video. I just lost one of my shelties to heart failure this morning. He was on Vetmedin for a year and he did well until about 2 months ago. After that it was a battle of keeping the fluid at bay.

I am going through the late night boughts of coughing and sometimes early morning. She is just turned 5. She had an xray which should a little bit of fluid in one lung and the heart minimally enlarged. Vet put her on a diuretic and a heart pill. Im beside myself researching this. I feel in denial. She is so young and she eats and she plays and acts normal except for the cough. I am so sorry Via L. I feel your pain.

I did Health testing on my doberman had an echocardiogram as a routine screening. Found out she is what they call preclinical DCM. My vet wants $230 a month for medication to try to stop the enlarging that is bound to begin pretty soon. I can't afford that but I do live in Texas so I have found that Texas A&M veterinary school is doing research on preclinical DCM, and I go January 6th for her preliminary exam to see if she qualifies for the genetic tests they want to do where they split genes insert them into her heart and hopefully change the genetic structure of the heart maybe this will cure it maybe it won't maybe it'll buy time for her they don't know she's only the third dog they wanted to do this research on but if it helps everybody else's dog in the future I'm willing to try. If I sit back and do nothing and just let her live the course of her life the vet said she has an average of two years left going by what her echocardiogram look like. That would make her 9 and that is still not the average lifespan for a doberman of 10 and 1/2 years. So I'm willing to give this a try maybe it'll help one of your dogs

My 10 year old male Beagle was having a cough. On check up - xray, echocardiogram, Doctor diagnosed slight heart enlargement and prescribed heart meds to be given forever. My baby would run, play, eat heartily without any issue, normal Beagle weight, except for this little cough. Being a sceptic, and also because I believe -‘don’t fix anything if it ain’t broke’ - I didn’t give him Any med. With natural home remedy of some lemon+ginger+v little honey + a pinch of turmeric mixed in warm chicken/mutton/ fish broth 2-3 times a day, his cough was cured. He is 14 years now. Thank God !

My 10 yr old maltese poodle cross was diagnosed with congestive heart failure 41/2 months ago. Have been using Vetmedin and Frusemide (diuretic). Also changed her diet to natural raw food but she doesn't want to eat it so tried cooking mixture lightly and she likes it better. I use ground beef or chicken, hearts and livers, salmon or sardines, variety of vegs and fruit, eggs (incl. ground shells), fish oil, coconut oil, and flaxseed all mixed together. Also give multi vitamin and other supplements. She is doing fairly well but still has slight cough and not as energetic as she used to be. I will try Co Q10 as well.

Thank you Regina and Jenny for asking after my maltese poodle with congestive heart failure. She was doing really well until New Year's Eve 2018. Took her to the vet the next day and she was put on a Frusemide drip to clear the fluid from her lungs. Her meds have been increased but the coughing is still really bad and she sleeps most of the day. The vet told me on Feb 10 she only has approx 2 months left and wont be able to breathe properly. (I watched my mother die struggling to breathe so I'm not letting my dog go through that.) I'm devastated as I thought she might last at least another 6 months. I have to go away for a family wedding in early May and will probably have to have her put down before the end of April. I'm just taking it one day at a time, trying to enjoy the time I have left with her.
@sharyn57
@sharyn57 5 жыл бұрын
Just want to add, I will NOT have my dog put down so I can go away to the wedding. The only reason to have a pet euthanized is for the sake of the dog's comfort and wellbeing ie. to eliminate suffering. Every dog lover knows that our dogs' welfare is paramount to us. We love them as if they are our children. All the best to anyone else dealing with this illness in your dog. It's not easy watching them decline and becoming so unwell.

Sharyn Thomas so did you catch the heart failure early on? I know there is no cure, but my maltipoo has CHF but I had no idea until the day he died. He was 9 years old turning 10 this year. I keep blaming myself because I think that if I caught it sooner, he would’ve live much longer. But from your story, it seemed like dogs with CHF don’t live very long even after treatments.

Thanks for the video Dr. Meiser. I have 9yr old, fawn, female boxer who is otherwise in perfect health. I gave her a dose of flea and tick medicine and within 2 weeks shes had 6 what appears to be seizures/syncopal episodes. Ekg confirms heart murmur, xray confirms slight enlargement on one side. Is the heart enlargement and the murmur a def. sign of a malfunctioning valve? I just dont have the money to spend on ultrasound at this time, couldnt we give her meds based on the current information? Blood work came back clean and clear too. Thanks in advance for your opinion.

Thank you Dr. Meiser A friend of us in Iran is having an 11 year old dog that has started showing Cardiac and digestive issues and is not eating well, basically the dog has entered into a critical condition and she needs immediate help. The vet has prescribed a tablet and a vet engineered cardiac dry food for this purpose. Unfortunately both of them are not available in Iran. We were wondering if anyone or any vet is around us here in UAE who can assist us and further provide some information in this regard. Your suggestions will be highly appreciated. Currently the dog is having fever, feels cold, does not eat well, her eyes are hardly opening due to infection and coughing severely that she can hardly breath plus water has started to accumulate in her lungs. These are the exact symptoms of what Dr. Meiser has explained in this video!

stupid vet diagnosed my sweet Bell with a bad back, gave her twice as much tramadol as was recommended for her weight. Her liver was bad from her heart. x-ray showed enlarged heart, and blood test elevated liver enzymes. Im not a vet but I have put this together. I listened to her heart, she had the whoosh whoosh just like you described. She died from the heart failure and the ridiculous amount of tramadol to an already compromised heart and liver.

so tragic. :( i'm so sorry for your loss. this is good info for others, such as myself, currently going thru the first dx of this. my baby girl has other symptoms as well. i cannot afford all the tests they want to run. but i had a horrible vet before, that left her with two infected ears, causing hearing loss, for over 8mo! told me the panting and stuff was all in my head. called me a hypochondriac. now i find out this is why - murmur. finding a good vet is harder than it should be. there seems to be nothing you can do. thank you for sharing.

My dog has the mitral valve disease & is suffering from fluid that fills his abdomen. My vet does a drainage every week & gets as much as 1 liter of fluid out. I question him as to the possibility of using a Jackson-Pratt drainage system to continually draw off small amounts as it builds up so that I wouldn't have to put my dog thru the once a week draining. His response was that he never heard of this procedure. I was hoping you may have heard of it & may be able to point me in the right direction. Thanks.

My dogs respitory rate is so much faster when he is lying on his left side. On his right side his breathing seems normal. Left side resp. rate 85-136. Right side resp. rate 25-35. Why is that? He also coughs for a few minutes if he plays for too long. He will be 9 this Nov. I am worried about him. He favors laying on his right side, hes restless at night, and more tired than usual. He takes a lot of deep breayhs (sighs). I hope it isn't his heart. He's a mini-Schnauzer, he's my best friend.

My dog Boo Boo passed three weeks ago he was over 18 years old had heart problems, dementia, collapsed trachea, severe dental problems, suffered a stroke three years ago. Ive only had him for the last 6 years and like you I don’t have the money to take him for all the expensive diagnostics. I did some research and tried giving him just a bit of hawthorn berry with his food I don’t think it helped at all I feel guilty because if I had my life together I could have maybe got some professional help for him. It hurts me so much but then this dog would have been euthanized when I got him 6 years ago because they were going to send him to the pound. He wasn’t really getting much out of life in the last six months and struggled to walk. He had a stroke and died in my arms. The last three weeks my chest hurts so bad and I feel so empty.

He seems to be better but he still has a fast breathing like symptom,which my vet said would never change. In the am in bed, he is very relaxed and his breathing is almost normal. Is the rapid breathing consistent with having CHF.. even being on those meds? Thanks.

All of my puppies that I breed are spoon-fed canned puppy food as a supplement to their meals. It actually accomplishes a few things. It teaches them to sit and wait quietly because they don't get their spoonful of canned food until they're sitting quietly, and it's also a Dandy way to hide medicine when they get older. If you have a can of food and you give them a couple spoonfuls just spoon feed him like a spoon feed any baby here folks, then when they get older or need medicine for some reason you just slip it on the bottom part of the spoon scoop up a little puppy food in it and spoon feed it to him and they don't even know the medicines in there. I had not spoon-fed my male Doberman since he was a puppy, his sister's supposed to take thyroid medicine so in the morning first thing I get my canned food and I put it on a butter knife that has no serrated edge, and I give all five dogs a bite of canned food and the two that are on thyroid meds I just plucked a little pills on top of their dog food and it works great I've got one that wouldn't take any kind of medicine if you tried to hide it in food but they know this is not a pill this is just a treat. for some reason this works better than trying to hide the pill and I've tried pimento cheese spread cream cheese peanut butter wrapping it up in a piece of Velveeta I've tried rolling it and hamburger balls and one dog can get it out of everything I tried but when I put it on top of that canned puppy food and feed her put it on the knife , she takes it like it's nothing. Just be sure you use one of those big table knives that really don't have a real cutting blade

From UAB and local vet do an endoscope on him and ultrasound. He's been on 4 or 5 antibiotics and anti fungal . He is now on reglan, sucralfate, Zanex fomotadine. He is on hills science diet DD. He is intolerant of anything with chicken, beef, or pork. the DD is salmon. He is now starting to have discharge from eyes consistent with distemper. Is there a test they can do for distemper?? He has also been tested for parvovirus. It was negative. I have also tried probiotics to no avail. At this point I think I want to put him to sleep but haven't had the heart to do it. He was clearly abused as he cowers in fear and I can only pet him with one hand. Two hands freak him out. He tries to bite everyone who comes near him except my husband and myself. I want him to know unconditional love, but I fear he is in more pain and I feel selfish for trying to do test after test to find answers for the little guy.
