15-year-old Luca Fappani contends with an unexpected guest during his first ever Cinch NRHA Non Pro (L4) Futurity Final when a dog leaps out of the stands to get in on the action. The astonished crowd watches as the dog tries to herd the horse, Gotta Get Diamonds, through the reining pattern. Horse of the West cameras catch all of the action and reaction. #NRHAFuturity2019

I'm guessing the dog's owner was absolutely positive their dog did not require a leash. It's always the ones that don't require a leash that cause the problems.

When I was taking lessons as a kid my dad always got permission from the stable owner to bring our puppy by and walk around the property while I had my lesson. As you say, it’s great experience and does a lot to socialize the dog and help them be better behaved later on. He was just careful where he took the puppy and only got so close to the horses, especially the first couple visits. (Once the puppy got the idea that horses were not for chasing or barking at, then they came closer, but only to where was okay - so not to the arena where people were having lessons, mostly around the school horses being groomed who were used to dogs. Again, he spoke to the stable owner first every time.)

It’s really getting out of hand, unnecessarily and downright dangerous. I remember seeing a dog run in the middle of the cross country cross at eventing competition about to chase a horse after it dumped its rider but luckily the person handling the horse managed to keep control while they grabbed the dog. My old man had an answer to nuisance dogs - a pellet gun. He always aimed for the hindquarters. Won't kill the dog but will do some damage and will stop a nuisance dog cold. Will probably require a trip to the vet afterwards to dig out the slug or treat the bruising, that's your problem, keeping your mutt under proper control would have prevented that from happening in the first place.

When I was 12 years old my dad got me a yearling filly named Pepper, not realizing that she needed a more experienced trainer. She was a bit nervous around our dog so we kept the dog in the house when I was working with the horse. About a week after we got her I was lunging her in the pasture when one of my brothers accidentally loosed the dog, who ran up barking. Pepper panicked, jerked the line from my hands, took off terrified of the dog and the dragging line, ran into the fence, flipped onto her head, and had to be put down after not regaining consciousness. I was so devastated and 58 years later I still blame myself for not holding the line tighter.

Not necessarily. reining saddles do that honestly. it is more likely the cinch is two tight. Or the reason why the saddle is popping up is because he’s standing up in a stir up so he’s putting all the weight towards the front of his saddle. The other reason why I would say it more likely it does fit since he does not have A breast collar on the saddle. Which means The saddle does not slide back when he does more intense moves. Jane Tannerevans these aren’t wild horses though are they. They don’t have to be worried about predators and what makes you think they go around like this all the time? Firstly western pleasure horses are bred to have a lower headset, secondly they are only asked to be in this position when being ridden, which is a fraction of their lives compared to all the time they spend without a rider on their backs.

Going long and low is very good, I MUCH prefer to seem them going like this over having their head tucked into a frame which is very unnatural. And for being able to see - when you let the horse see it's footing for instance you let them stretch DOWN so they know where to place their feet. It's also called trusting their rider on direction.

I'm learning horse behavior and am starting up in lessons, so I only know the basics (please don't write me off as an idiot, I'm a fast learner!) Anyway, can someone tell me why the horse's ears are pinned?? He's 100% not happy if they are that far back, and he's swishing his tail a lot and I think there was some hesitation to do as he was asked. I looked at the bit first and saw he was mouthing, but I dunno how to tell if he's just adjusting or actually hurting. The saddle if I remember for western, is where it should be, and I don't think the rider was pulling on the reins much. Could it be the bit? Or the crowd? Or just what he's doing? (Please if you answer, tell me your background with horses and such so I know it's not just some cranky troll that doesn't really know, because I'm wanting to learn. And this isn't meant to insult anyone, I just want to make sure I'm not getting WRONG info)

I'm pretty sure that it was the bit, I've been taught to not ride in bits UNLESS you absolutely need them, this horse right here looks like he was uncomfortable with the bit. Having that said, people nowadays should know better when putting a bit on their horse, if you ride in a bit, make sure the teeth are floated, I bet the horse was getting the sharp points on his teeth causing the discomfort and pain. Do not hate on me, I was taught different and taught to be aware of how the horse is feeling before you ride. Ellen, Good luck with riding!

@@Hannahs_Mustangs thanks, that really helped!! I know rubber bits can still hurt if they aren't used correctly or the rider is pulling super hard, and same with metal of course. I ride with a rubber bit (my trainer's horse, English riding). I never ripped his face off or anything, or even got much of a "oi stop that" from him, but I do tend to pull on accident when I'm posting or doing 2 point. I'm only trotting a little rn, but teacher had me practice positions so I know them well come actually needing them. I also tend to pull a bit harsher when asking him to stop, and I just need more opportunity to fix it by doing, cuz I know how XD I love though that my teacher pushed the power of body language, for the horse especially, and for myself. I don't kick when I want him to move, I squeeze, I lean when I turn, I sit back when I woah. I feel a disconnect from any partnership with him (but it's there), but that's because he isn't MY horse. We work well together though and we treat each other with earned respect. I love him though and really look up to my trainer. Honestly now I low-key wanna ask if we can spend half of my hour off the saddle doing something focused on body language and partnership or something. Does that sound dumb??

@@Hannahs_Mustangs also it's not to accuse, it's a precaution. I'm sure we both know there are some bitchy equestrians out there who are talking about subjects they know little about. I wouldn't consider myself an "equestrian" but I'm earning my way there. Looking at comments and videos on KZfaq, and from what I've seen IRL I can confidently say my trainer is teaching me the right things and humane way. I don't wanna say right because there's multiple ways to teach similar things, but I was going for she wasn't teaching the WRONG things.

WHY DOES THE HORSE CARRY HIS HEAD SO LOW WHEN IT'S NOT THEIR NATURAL POSITION IN CANTER OR GALLOP.
@saltyfroots9
@saltyfroots9 4 жыл бұрын
Barbara Dyson it’s for the discipline. There are very, VERY few disciplines in which a horse actually has a natural headset. Plus long and low is sooo good for horses. Everyone should be practicing long and low in their rides no matter what discipline they do. It helps build a topline and stretches a horses back. So it’s all good!

@@saltyfroots9 how does it stretch a horses back when someone is sitting on a heavy saddle on a horse, so when a horse canters or gallops it's better that his head is low, does that apply when he jumps
@saltyfroots9
@saltyfroots9 4 жыл бұрын
Barbara Dyson it doesn’t matter if someone is on their back, that doesn’t affect the horses ability to stretch or use their muscles at all. During ridden work long and low is very good, even if it’s not the entire session. I do at least 15 minutes of long and low per ride with my horse and I’m an English rider. Jumping is a completely different thing and it’d be physically impossible for a horse to be long and low while actively jumping, and while in between jumps it wouldn’t work because they need a higher head set to see a jump properly.

I don't think it is fair to make him and his horse do it all over again since both will be tired from the stress of competition and the riding. He was doing so well, both of them looked very relaxed as if they were just out riding somewhere and decided to have fun. I would of scored them on this and added the points the judges made from that instead of making them do it all over again! Since it was beyond horse and rider that this dog was in the ring with them. BTW Luca, you and your horse did handle this extremely professional, not breaking a stride or freaking out. Good think you had the horse's legs covered, it looked like the dog was nipping.
