Pretending that this isn't an April fools presentation, your problem was using food to motivate dogs. I had a dog. a husky/cattle dog mix, Foxie, that I could get to do calisthenics, with rolling over and sitting up and then laying down repeatedly, based on just a desire to please me and get praise and show how smart she was. She would heel reliably, although she wouldn't come back after letting her off lead until she had run off her energy. Sled dogs will pull and run for miles, and they are not trained by using treats.

Turnspit dogs were real though, and they were really used to cook chickens on rotisseries. They went extinct about 1900. The breeds history is actually quite interesting. They developed small snouts, and unfortunately were commonly inbred.

Like the other person said, It is different for every dog. I have a full size Australian Shepherd who I have trained with treats near exclusively. He loves attention and to be rubbed down, and he will learn and listen for praise. However, his food drive is to an extreme. He becomes absolutely engrossed in learning whatever he needs to so he can get the food. It is amazing because he has such a sharp intellect and honestly training him with treats has been a tremendous success. I tried not to train him with only treats, but food was always on his mind. Praise or play only did so much for him as a reward. But in my opinion it made him far easier to train. Just to clarify, I taught him most of the commands or habits using food as a reward. However, once he knew the command completely, I rarely used treats to reward him for it. Unless the opportunity presented itself naturally. His food drive is so intense that he puts 100% of his brain power into learning the command every single time. Even for regular old dog food. I can't tell you how many commands he has learned in the 5 min before he eats his meals. If he had it his way, he'd be sausage shape for sure. Sorry to ramble on about my dog, but my point is it is highly dependent on each dog's personality. Mine still enjoys following my commands when I ask him to, no treat needed. But to teach him at his highest potential, he needs a food based reward to focus on learning. I'll add that his herding drive is very strong, so strong that it is the only instinct that can override his normally calm and cooperative behavior. He goes into a one track mind on those rare occasions, thinking it is something he must do above all else. Unless of course, food is around.

You could try tying the leash in a position that encourages the dog to stay slightly forward of center. Not so tight that it chokes the dog obviously, just makes it a bit uncomfortable to stop walking. That way you also can tell that if they choose to stop even with the discomfort, it's time to take them off the wheel and let them rest. An adjustable hitch alongside the wheel would be the easiest way to do this.

To anyone who in genuinely interested in this, dogs be used to power all kinds of things from butter churns and grain mills, to washing machines and bandsaws. The issue in this video, bar it being a joke, is one the dog is old and of low drive, and secondly instead of a wheel he'd be better using a slat mill that restricts the dogs side view, but is open to the front. I will be making videos over the next few months of many of the machines that can be powered via a dog treadmill, including a lathe and a bandsaw.

@analyticofexistance7847
@analyticofexistance7847 22 күн бұрын
You could link the wheel to a treat dispenser which displays a treat, and drops it if the dog runs a certain distance, rinse and repeat. This would ensure the dog runs for a specific amount of time before becoming to full on treats and jumps off. Obviously you have to teach the dog that if they run ancertain distance on the wheel it drops treats, but once you complete that, it becomes automatic.

"emotional support animal" is a great job. how dare.... seriously though, I heard there was a design for a spit turn that used a fan in the chimney to use the raising smoke/hot air to turn the spit. sounded cool.
@killingtimeitself
@killingtimeitself 2 ай бұрын
this would be trivial to do with a strong enough draft lol.
@davidmcgill1000
@davidmcgill1000 2 ай бұрын
Sounds like it'd need a lot of torque to turn and I don't think atmospheric pressure could provide it. Plus you're impeding airflow in the chimney meaning more smoke is likely to enter the room.
@killingtimeitself
@killingtimeitself 2 ай бұрын
@@davidmcgill1000 you just need a strong draft, all you're driving is a rotisserie, they don't require very much RPM, so you can use pulleys to run a high ratio, get a decent fast RPM from the draft, though you would need quite a hot fire. It's absolutely doable. Steam boilers use draft to pull air through the firebox and to provide copious amounts of fresh air. There are numerous different takes on wood burning stoves that use various kinds of drafting to increase efficiency. A good draft can create quite a bit of draw.
@TCC180
@TCC180 2 ай бұрын
@@killingtimeitself Actually the whole idea of using the draft from the heat of the fire probably isn't the most efficient way to do it. I only mentioned it because I recalled that in one episode of Good Eats they said that Leonardo da Vinci had designs for a rotisserie cooker that operated on this principal. Hypothetically you could use a small steam engine to rotate the spit, and it would have much better torque, and more efficiency transfer of energy (I think). of course da vinci also had designs that used springs or weights/gravity to do the work, which were probably more effective and efficient.
@killingtimeitself
@killingtimeitself 2 ай бұрын
@@TCC180 its definitely not efficient but its cheap and replaces dogs, plus you dont need a steam engine so. gravity and a clock mechanism would be the next most likely to be honest.

With the amount of half-laps you do, you should look into making a 'router plane', easily one of the simplest hand-planes to make and it'll help a lot with the funky grain you often run into with construction lumber (though you're doing a pretty darn good job free-hand I might add). If you're not already doing it, try drilling and driving your pegs in at a slight angle off square and alternate them (5-degrees or so), it'll help hold things together a bit like a dove-tail joint.

Then take it apart and drill the holes. Just mark where they went because they will be specific to each joint and rotation. A lot of times it's easiest to take the measurement using the other part. You could also sand or shave down the pins a little to make them slide in better. Nice job!

Lots of your videos have wood against wood friction. You should consider using some lubricant. One that works between wood surfaces is graphite powder, which can be sourced naturally. The down side is that you need to keep replacing it. Note: charcoal will not work as a substitute due to its rougher texture when compared with graphite, which is very smooth and uniform.

It genuinely would be interesting to figure out what kind of dog would do this without needing to be constantly bribed. I've heard many a tale of dog and cat owners who got their pets an exercise wheel, and the pets using them for fun for hours - but especially if they have a human running in place on a treadmill right next to them. When it becomes a group activity instead of a trick for treats. There's a whole lot of dogs who still have a high urge to run for various reasons, like border collies or huskies. More of a barrier between the wheel and the fire might help too. I know this video might not have been meant seriously (posted on April 1 and all that), but it's still an interesting conundrum.

The turnspit dog replaced the slave that would have been employed to turn the food. It was cheaper to feed the dog, and it never complained.

All I cared about was ensuring that the dog got to eat some chicken. Successful video.

You should have tried a young bulldog, they have a thing for skateboards. That may translate into wheel running. But i guess you cant tell unless you try.

I think gear that is leg powered would've been better. Like riding a bike if you were to just spin a chicken. Although back then, people already lack food, so using other sources of energy to power your work would be very beneficial

Feed dog 1 chicken worth of treats. Get 1 chicken in return. Laughed when you nabbed the dogs from the dog park. Thanks for a nice light-hearted April Fools!
