I can confirm this works. Did work with all my dogs, all difficult breeds like Shiba Inu, Akita... only my GSD is a bit more difficult as ze just REALLY wants to play with all dogs but of course he can't 😂 I do it like this anyway and he's making progress but by far not as fast as my other dogs plus I live on the countryside with not as many dogs or dog parks so training can't be done as intense as if you have a dog park close by. He's perfect at a distance up to 7meters but then he gets excited. He passes but he can't stop looking at the dog. Recently he began to get it and does a short look at me. One has to be quick and mark and the progress will be daily. Today he did his obedience work and fun tricks with a few dogs passing close by without even looking at them. I'm just telling this to motivste people with more difficult personality. Usually it gets worse before it gets better and in the end you will succeed and your dog be even happier ❤

Nice to hear it! Hope it works for my one-year old Husky-Boxer-Border Collie mix. She's doing okay with everything else but is SO reactive to ALL animals (cats, dogs, squirrels, geese, foxes, you name it). She cries super loud and pulls so hard, I've sprained my wrist twice. Nothing else has worked so far. Let's see!

I’m gonna try this with my Shiba! She actually made tons of progress lately. She has made the decision to ignore a dog across the street, and walked around the block with another dog! (Her prey drive is also crazy, but that comes second. She is definitely a lot better at controlling herself)

hey i also got a reactive rescue dog, what did work best for you? Mine doesn´t even look at me outside when hes distracted by dogs, even when i have really nice food and pull him or call his name. 🥲

@@xSkythe I realized that I was putting her in situations for which she was not ready! I had to go back to the basics. For instance, if we're on a walk and I see a dog that's coming our way, I'll cross the street to put some distance between that dog and us. From that distance, I'm able to do the things that happyhoundsdogtraining teaches in her videos. Don't give up!

So excited to try this out! Just acquired a 1 yr old suspected black mouth cur. He is absolutely beautiful and has learned so much in just a few short weeks but the only time he loses focus is when there is another dog or a person who has pet him and he wants to follow.

So glad you liked it! To answer your question: a huge part of training success is managing the distance from other dogs & your dogs threshold (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fZeFiduDrqixdac.html) so that moments like that are rare and things are structured so training remains fairly "easy". However, there's times that won't be possible. If you can practice this "recall" game frequently (initially in a dog free area, then practice it somewhere there are dogs as a distraction) it'll massively help! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e5eSjJiLyrvciIU.html

Thank you so So much, My 5 yr old AssistanceDog (official ServiceDog term here in the Netherlands) has always had natural neutrality towards other dogs, so I never had to really work on it from scratch, only reinforce it. We sadly had a tense day where we had a scare with a loose and loudly barking dog in the dark, and it has lead to her developing major reactivity towards any dog from big distances until she can sniff them up-close. Absolutely not ideal for a SD ofc... I think this is exactly what my trainer tried to explain to me but couldn't show me how to (we graduated 2 yrs ago so we don't really have training w our trainer anymore unless there's issues, and she's highly pregnant now so our contact moments, if there were even any, have been online). I am going to try this out!

This is an awesome video! I had a question about whether to use it for fear based reactivity? Would you change the method of walking towards a dog? Like doing a wide U around the dog instead of head on? Let me know if this doesn’t make sense 😂

Your question makes sense! With fear based reactivity I still *eventually* use this method (because my goal always is to be able to have normal walks if possible) BUT a big reminder: this isn’t day one of reactivity training. When I first starting working with Millie she needed almost 2 blocks of space from a dog! With a really fearful dog I’d start more like I did with Bosa (the puppy) and stand in a field far away from other dogs, then eventually progress to safely passing right by dogs 😊

I plan on trying this with my dog. Many of training attempts didn't work out because she would either ignore the food while outside, or be way too interested in trying to get the treats I'm carrying and wouldn't act normally. These days when I try to train indoors she constantly offers sit and won't think of doing anything else, and she gives up quickly and goes back to her bed.

It's not something I personally use much at all, but I know some trainers love it! I think a lot of it depends on the dog & client you're working with, and also the availability of space & scenarios you can see up depending on your area.

My new challenge /goal is to get Bella to ignore all animals when we’re not intentionally going to play with a dog friend (example: while I’m driving, and she’s focused on every dog she sees). How do I get her to leave it (stop staring)? Staring is still below her threshold. Do you have a training program for getting to the point where the dog never hits threshold for silly reasons, like opening the garage door?

That's a great challenge! 👏 For her staring... you can use the steps in this video (mark & reward for watching but not reacting/pursuing) which should draw her gaze back to you easily if she's under threshold. With rehearsal she should start disengaging without any cueing. Another great option is progressive "leave it" training. This video explains how I teach that cue when a dog is interested in prey like rabbits, etc, but it also works if your dog is watching other dogs (Video linked here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d510bNd2mZbcn3k.html). I don't have any specific advice for guaranteeing a dog never hits threshold since every dog and what affects them is so different. My suggestion would be to try to analyze WHY something seems to bother Bella.... for example, is the garage door bothersome because of the noise? Once you know that, you can work on conditioning for the specific concern your dog has. I do ask for a sit before I open the door to the car, but she’s already clawed it by then. Car rides equal the potential to see things and go places. She loves that. Thank you for the links.

I've been practicing this with my dog since he was a pup but sadly we've had some struggles. He doesn't bark or lunge but he will stare at other dogs until they're out of his view. While he's staring, he won't listen to my "look at me" cue. The only thing I've found that will break his staring is tossing a treat on the ground, but then he goes back to staring and won't give me any eye contact. If the dog gets close enough, he will drop to the ground. I try to treat him though because I love that he doesn't react, but he'll just never give me eye contact. Also when he stares, he tends to make other dogs react!

How old is your dog now? If it's been a long term struggle I'd question whether he's actually overthreshold (watch this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fZeFiduDrqixdac.html) and needs more distance from dogs for successful sessions. I equate different dogs reactions when over threshold to how people react on a rollercoaster when overwhelmed: some scream (reactivity) and some freeze. As the video mentions you want to be getting voluntarily (un-cued) disengagement before getting closer and closer to other dogs. If that's never happening, your dog is very likely already too close. And it makes sense that it's causing the other dogs to react! A hard stare is actually quite high up on the ladder of aggression and the other dogs could be taking it as a threat.

Depending on their temperament, they're either telling you they're uncomfortably close to the trigger OR they're way too overexcited. Either way, I'd take it as a sign they need extra distance for successful training. You can use a technique like this to get that distance in the moment: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oa52hdCS0dqumpc.html

First of all he doesn't eat snacks at all or just out of the house? If it's just outside and he does take treats inside start the recall training at home. This happened with my dog because first of all she's a pretty anxious dog and secondly outside is pretty stimulating so creating the positive association to recall inside first helped a lot 😂 And what kind of breed is he and if mixed which breed do you think is more predominant? Cause some dogs are more independent than others like huskies

But how do I did that when my dog doesn’t like treat, doesn’t like toys and doesn’t care about pets outside our home? He’s a 3yo Eurasier btw (primitive breed, very independent). I understand the whole concept of threshold but it’s just hard to do it when he’s distracted/overstimulated by everything (animals, sounds, smells, etc) outside. He doesn’t really have any interest for humans tho. He walks very well on the leash inside, recall is great in our home but when we’re outside it’s another story. We’ve improved a lot, my dog used to pull like a madman and have 0 recall, now he pulls less (although it depends on the day) and he has a great recall when there’s no distractions around but he’ll totally LOCK on cats or dogs outside. He’s not even agressive or reactive, but he can sit or lie down and stare at the dog until it’s out of view without moving at all and even calling him and all doesn’t work.

It's fantastic (and recommended) that you started his training indoors since that helps build a base of skills without distraction! You mentioned understanding threshold, but I'm curious if you've watched my video on it? I'll link it here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fZeFiduDrqixdac.html. I ask because it still very much sounds like your dog is overthreshold as soon as he's outside, which won't make for effective training. I compare dogs "displays" of over threshold to humans on a rollercoaster: some scream and make a huge fuss, others pancake and go still and quiet... but both can be equally overstimulated. If a dog loses food motivation, doesn't respond to a loaded marker word, or is showing fixation behaviours that can't be verbally changed there's a good chance they're over threshold even if they're not having loud reactions. In general it's all about finding ways to bridge that difficulty gap (between indoors and your current walks). Yes, I had watched the over threshold video with the spider example 😅 Another factor that is important in my opinion is the fact that my dog is a family dog, walked by several people, the problem is that no matter how many times we agreed to do the same thing, we don’t and all of our different mistakes make us go back instead of forward. It’s very tiring because I’ve done nearly everything on my side to improve (along with human mistakes) and yet my family doesn’t follow 🥲 I’ll watch the other videos, thank you.

I am only an amateur dog training enthusiast, but I think maybe a dog like that needs more exercise? When I work with working breed dogs, they are a lot easier to work with if they are regularly tired out. Running, hiking, etc.

I really like the idea of this, but where I live, even though there’s a state-wide leash law, there are several dogs that are untrained and off leash. When my dog was a puppy, she was attacked by an off-leash dog while we were walking on leash. In that situation, I let go of her leash and she ran off while I held that dog down and yelled for help. Since then, she has developed a severe reactivity to other dogs. Just in the last 4 months, we have been charged at by 3 off-leash dogs while walking in our neighborhood. The first two were only trying to play and luckily my other dog, a ridgeback, was able to prevent the off-leash dog from getting to my other dog. She reacts very strongly and doesn’t wait for the other dog to make the first move, while my ridgeback does. My ridgeback body-blocks while my other dog, a collie, will act like she wants to kill that dog. It’s really difficult for us to work through this because every time we start to make progress, another off-leash dog comes at us. This recent one was last week, and that dog got around my husband and started fighting both my ridgeback and my collie. Both my husband and I got dragged on the ground because I was trying to hold our dogs back so he could grab the off-leash dog, my collie actually ran away for a second to the end of the leash but that dog caught up to her. Overall it was very traumatizing, and unfortunately our neighbor’s 5/6 year old son came out to try to grab his dog in the middle of it all and ran back to his mom when she finally came outside to say that my dogs bit him. So she called animal control on us and because there was a child involved, my collie now has a strike against her and is in a quarantine period. I just don’t know how to get past this with her because every time we take 2 steps forward and 5 steps back. 😓

My dog also got attacked by a dog when she was a puppy and it traumatized her so now whenever she sees dogs she’s super reactive. I had to avoid parks with lots of dogs and immediately head the other direction whenever I saw any other dogs around the vicinity but of ofc this doesn’t help in desensitizing the reactivity. While my dog still hates all other dogs she can finally walk past other dogs on the same side of the sidewalk now. Which for me is still a win. What I did was break her concentration every time she started to zone in on other dogs, it’s important to break the dogs focus before they reach their threshold. High rewards or toys was not enough to break my dogs focus so I used ultrasonic sound. Once my dog looked away I’d immediately treat her. After every time before I use the sound I use a word as a marker, after a while you will no longer need the sound and you can just say the marker word, once they’re really good you will no longer need to use the marker word either.

What a terrible situation!!! I'm so sorry to hear that. It's tricky because you can do so much work to desensitize your own dogs, but if they keep getting attacked by off leash ones then it's going to be hard to make progress. Teaching an emergency U-turn (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gZqfgsankr6xoIE.html) can help because without adding leash tension you can quickly turn and avoid situations that you see coming. Do you carry any sort of deterrent (spray or noise) to use on the other dogs if they're aggressive and approaching? That might help too! ♥

That can happen if you’re not careful for sure. Every dog will tolerate different amounts. I try to bring pure meat treats most of the time (and often real meat such as a small amount of ground beef for a really high value reward as seen a couple times in this video). I also recommend on cutting back on meals during intense training to prevent overall over feeding!

Honestly it’s SO common because people want to make sure their puppies are well socialized, but it can then backfire and lead to expectations of meeting all dogs.

For me the problem isn't that my dog is excited, he's afraid and he goes into attack mode. Our dog trainer actually taught us to do it the same exact way you do it but it only worked minimally. My dog got bitten a few years ago by another dog randomly (it came off leash running towards us and bit him in the face) and since then he can't tolerate other dogs at all. We now want to go to a special dog trainer who has a lot of experience with dogs like mine.

There's a study I read about medication for assisting with behavior modification. Maybe try finding a veterinary behaviorist to assist you as well

Try distance building, start far doing the same method here and get closer until you can. It is not a quick fix. Sounds like your dog is reactive I worked on this with with aggressive dog and it works but patience and time is required. Hope this helps.

If your dog isn't food motivated, this will be difficult for you. You'll need to find something, anything, to get your dog to focus on you. Trial and error may take more time than you planned. I personally use tongue clicks because I don't like talking loud in public. Other people usually don't react to clicks as compared to spoken words, so that's one less distraction for my dogs.

All dogs are food motivated since it a survival instinct. You just gotta plan their meal around training; this might mean training is the only time they get to eat.
