I've just bought a house in Melbourne Australia with lots of this plant in the backyard. It currently has lots of red berries.

harvest the berries and make jam or syrup, it tasts nice

They are Lovely. Such a sweet perfume, literally humming with Bees & popping with all manner of song birds. Then Loaded with berries adding a bountiful charm to the warm golden leaves in Autumn, & then if we are lucky, sudden dashes of red berry brilliance, dripping in glistening icicles, against the soft whiteness of snowfall. When the birds are done with them there is usually some left over for me to dry & powder. Very Rich in the most digestible vitamin C. & a few dried buds adds just the right zing to a nice cup of tea when you are feeling ever so slightly adventurous.. All around, they are a Win Win for Everyone. Funny story, kind of...we once had chickens, before so many neighbors moved too close..and of course, a chicken coop, which eventually fell into disuse.and these roses..literally grew until they took it over. Completely engulfing it. We did not have to worry about taking it down & what to do with the decaying wood...the roses..ate it.

Just wonderful to read this, you write beautifully and I'm really grateful for you taking the time out to leave such a brilliant message about these oft overlooked roses - it's such a shame in a way that a 100 years or so ago people thought it would be better to hybridise them and "improve" them, I have some "old world" roses in my front garden but I always remember they wouldn't be there if it wasn't for the original dog roses like there are in my back-garden. I have just planted 5 in my back border! we have a beautiful song thrush that comes to the garden from a self made nature reserve in their massive garden and land, she comes in the winter and late summer from what I can see, he song is incredible almost digital sounding. hopefully she will use the Dog Rose.

Thank you -they originate in India and across East Asia I believe and are used in Ayurvedic medicine - apparently they were a favourite of Indian queens :)

For those who can't afford a large shrub in the garden, but want a rose that offers pollen and nectar to insects, these days there are many bee-friendly and/or ground-covering varieties that not only stay short and compact, but also flower profusely and are resistant to common rose diseases such as black spot and powdery mildew (most are suitable for pots). Check out, for example, the rose breeders Tantau or Kordes (e.g. Bees Paradise Rose series or Stadt Rom variety). However, my favourite for insects is a fairly bushy variety (but still less than half the size of the dog rose) named Dawn Crest - while not as resistant as the newer varieties, it has a mass of open flowers with an intense sweet clove scent that are literally a bee paradise.

Hi Joel. I have a 30 metre by 30 metre garden. The perimeter is a Mish mash of old wire fencing. A have seeded the entire perimeter with dog rose. How long before I have a dog proof garden? My pooches love to escape. Thank you. Steve. Bulgaria 😊

I think I've found either a tiny dog rose or field rose growing down the side of my house that I've left to go wild for the past 2 years. I've just repotted it as it was in the way but, I just need to give it a proper location. I've no idea how it got there. Free plants yay.

I don't understand why dog rose bushes aren't actively spread in wilderness. Finding out how much packed with vitamin C and other goodies those red berries are, it just makes dog rose a truly amazing plant.

Couldn't have put it better myself! I think people forget that all our "modern" roses were grown/cultivated from these original beauties, and whilst "improving" them for us we lessened the value for wildlife unfortunately. They’re great self seeders to. When do you cut back early spring? Mine is rocking the fence in high winds as it’s a monster now, but covered in berries.

Hi Tracey :) I would cut back in winter, once all the hips/berries have been enjoyed by the wildlife but still leaving some previous year's growth for habitat, which will of course encourage fresh growth and a profusion of flowers in the Spring.

Interesting video , do you know if Dog rose will take from cuttings , which might be a good way to get plants for garden .

Hi there Raymond - you can indeed taking cuttings :) Rose cuttings should be taken from the current year's growth. You can take flexible, softwood rose cuttings of very new growth in late-spring and summer as these root quickly and easily. If you wanted to buy some more mature specimens we do have them for sale at www.wildyourgarden.com along with a vast array of native wildflowers, shrubs and other plants :) Best wishes - Joel

Could I grow this in a pot? I try to grow as many interesting wildflowers as I can here up in Yorkshire e.g I've got Globeflower doing great in a pot because that is a northern plant. Dog Rose grows commonly found the hedges here so if you could answer my question thanks in advance

Would these grow in tropical areas? We don't really have any fragrant roses here. We some roses in pots at home, don't know the cultivar but the flowers are really tiny.

Hi Joel, I have a big dog rose in my garden, but it is a very old one and it is not bushy. Can I do anything with it to make it bushier so that it provides cover for the birds or should I replace it with a new younger plant?

Hi there :) If you're thinking of potentially replacing it, I would give it one last chance and cut it hard back, almost to the ground. They are pretty resilient and should grow back with lots of vigour and fresh bushy growth. Hope this helps, and saves you some money to buy another plant for the garden ;) Best wishes - Joel

Hi Elliot, it's a fast grower and it will need some support, not sure if it was clear in this video but mine is free standing to an extent, ie not against a wall or trellis etc. If you're in the UK we do sell this rose and other native ones at www.wildyourgarden.com - if you contact me via the site and send a photo of where you want a rose, I can advise on which would be the best for the situation. @@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton I read somewhere that if it is free standing, it can eventually grow around 3 metres tall (don't know about spread). I have one on the way, hopefully it serves the wildlife (and myself of course) well

Hi Joel, great vid. Can I ask the best place to buy a Dog Rose as I never see them in garden centres? Secondly (bit niche this one, apologies in advance), I have an existing mature ornamental rose. Could I graft Rosa Canina onto the root stem?
