Ive actually had dogs that were afraid of different elements of the fireworks... One dog was afraid of the loud noise so we desensitized him to loud sounds by dropping a food bowl on the floor before filling it. Another dog was afraid of the bright lights flashing so we flickered the lights before handing her a treat. The most difficult thing to desensitize to was the smell of the gunpowder and smoke... My most recent dog is terrified of fire (it's a logical instinct) and keeping in mind that she needs this as a survival skill I had to teach her how to not only stay calm when she smells it, but also to seek me out. So I bought a box of paper poppers and each time I tossed one on the ground she could smell the fresh spark powder and I would call her over to get a treat

I live across small pond where town fireworks are set off (no way to drown out). I have 3 dogs. My smallest from hoarding case very noise sensitive the other 2 unphased. I use thunder shirt, CBD, air conditioner, loud TV and homeo home pet storm stress. Takes edge off but... I can tell you funny story proving thunder shirt helps. I took thunder shirt off after town fireworks were over I put it on coffee table. The neighbor set off fireworks 🙄 and my dog put his paws up on coffee table and nosed the thundershirt and looked at me.. He NEVER puts his paws on coffee table. I put his thundershirt back on & he was much happier. Lesson learned..don't take thundershirt off until neighbors go to bed.

Great video! Using bubble wrap is genius! We do turn up the TV so our two year old Shih Tzu can’t hear fireworks. To help with thunder and lighting we turn up tv and close drapes. We also leave all lights on at night so she can’t see the lighting. Love your videos, keep them coming 😃

Thanks this was a huge help. I’ve been giving cbd treats the last few days. tonight when the town’s fireworks started and I got a concerned look from my doxie - I picked her up and took her to the window and showed her the fireworks that were making the noise. She then went back to the sofa and fell asleep - a big difference from the last 2 years!

Big hello from Portugal! Were in the summer we have so many vilage partys and many fireworks! I have a golden of 3 months and this method with plastic made me pratice in the first day when they Started the fireworks! She dont have a afraid even when they make a big noise … we call “morteiros” … she slip all nigth! And one day i was in the street walking her…the fireworks start and all the dogs were crazy and mine very calm. Thank you so much 🙏

We played "white noise" music on all Google house speakers through the 4th event worked perfectly for our dog. Allowed us to still have conversations and watch our favorite TV shows

I love the bubble packaging technique! So smart. My dogs have always been satisfied once seeing up-close something they don't like at a distance. They're also terrified of fireworks so I have high hopes that this will work for them!

Counter conditioning is a good method. But I haven't the strength to do it being my chihuahua has a stage 5 heart murmur, so I just let him go to the bathroom (where he feels safest/most powerful) and put music on blast. I'll stay with him and bring snacks to make sure he's still comfortable enough to eat.

My dog has ptsd from her previous life. She lived on a reserve and they had shoot outs every other month to get rid of the strays. Upon rescue she had to have bullet shrapnel removed from herself and her puppies. I tried the bubble wrap and she literally peed herself right on the spot. I reassure her that she's ok but nothing helps. Summer months are hell because of the thunder.

I find that the zapping fly killer has helped my dog Bella get over the anxiety of popping notices.. 🐕🤗❤️

Training with counterconditioning is essential for making sounds less scary, and resolving the need for supplements or medication. Research on dogs has recently revealed that CBD is NOT effective on Anxiety. If your dog is very upset by loud noises (such as fireworks), consider consulting with your vet for either over the counter supplements such as Composure (good for low level fear, but you’ll want to make sure it doesn’t conflict with other medications your dog is taking) or if anxiety is high, use of event medications.

I have a chihuahua that gets completely scared of thunder and fireworks, we have the thundershirt and we put tv or music, but my neighbor is always popping, our yards are connected and sounds like it’s right outside, thanks for the tips, I’m going to try the bubble wrap hopefully it works for us too

“Fireworks aren’t just for the 4th of July, but also New Years” Unless you live in the south and they are out for EVERY holiday. Like no joke, Christmas, Halloween, Presidents’ Day. Just fireworks all….the….timeeeee. Thankfully my younger dog doesn’t care but my older girl is so terrified. She’s also afraid of thunder or any loud popping noise. She does pretty good with the CBD but we have her anxiety meds on hand for the big nights like the actual 4th. Sleeping in our bedroom helps too! She’s a lot calmer when she’s got a bed next to my side of the bed. Despite all of our tricks, she still gets decently stressed. She’s pretty miserable this morning, very groggy! But she’s at home and she’s safe so that’s the most important part.

My border collie gets to a 12 at newyears and with a thunderstorm. He completely panics. I always stay with him and I let him crawl up to me. In his case, first he panics and then I can't even get in contact with him. He totally shuts down, so sad to see him panic like that. We always turn on the tv or radio a bit louder then usual and before newyears he gets meds, but at a herbal base. I start with them like 2 weeks before and it helps him enough that I can stay in contact with him. I don't have to think about food or treats. Not even peanutbutter can get his mind of the fireworks.

My sheperd goes off more on the light effects of the fireworks. She barks at the exploding lights and more the crackling sounds. Any tips for that? Of course we do stay inside at the main fireworks time, but some people randomly shoot off their rockets. I'd really like to help her calm down. She's less panicking than rather like mad at the fireworks and barks like she found a stranger in the living room.

Our dog Ginger now 11, has high anxiety to fireworks, thunder and gun shots (there’s a shooting range near our home and neighbors who like to shoot off their guns!). I bought Ginger a Thundershirt years ago and didn’t like it at all. She nearly bit me trying to take it off her. When she grew bigger and was more mature, I bought another Thundershirt. She wasn’t having it. I spent a lot of money on pet CBD oils and treats and never seemed to work on Ginger. Maybe we need to try a brand you recommend. I love the idea of playing music for her. Our dog groomer plays music for her as Ginger gets anxious about baths. Ginger is the only living being that likes me to sing to her (I can’t sing at all!). LOL Often when she hears thunder long before we do, she’s in our guest bathroom where there are no windows and cowards in the shower stall. Besides her crate, the guest bathroom is her safe place.

Unfortunately I live 3 minutes away from the park from where the fireworks are. So not only do we have thousands of people walking past our house, the noise from the fireworks is off the wall. I have to sedate my dogs with medication from my vet

So now my neurotic 8 yr old dog is a little uneasy around bubblewrap. 🤣

Lord help me. I could not watch the whole video because my dog was hysterically barking at the sound. He doesn’t cower like my last dog did from fireworks and thunder. He barks and snarls at the air. He’s totally inconsolable and it makes me anxious too! The only thing that has worked is holding the squirt bottle. I also vacuum with the squirt bottle in one hand because he will attack the vacuum. I do not have to spray him, just have it there and he knows he needs to give up the outward hysterics. I do feel guilty using this technique but it is all I can do to stop him from the disturbing behavior. I will try CBD for a few days and attempt this training. But first, I’ll finish watching the video with headphones on while he’s sleeping safe in his crate. Oh, and he has a thunder shirt - we’ve used it for many years. The ritual of putting it on seems to be calming in itself. It does seem to help with storms, but I’m not sure about the fireworks (nor for the dumpster being emptied ~25 yards from our front door *shudder*).

My girl was never scared of thunder until last night when lightening struck twice outside our house! I even jumped. My 70 pound GSD crawled into my lap! Hope she is not reactive to thunder now. I used to watch Cesar Milan, but I really do not like his love of these pitbullmonsters, those killer eyes, would never trust them, these musclular bodies pure power, uncontrolable and not pretty at all.
