Man, I saw this one a hundred years ago and I always wondered why it wasn't more popular (or more reviewed). I thought it was such a great premise. You often get these scenes in monster movies where a dog growls at the monster, and it's just a passing thing, but in this movie that one gimmick is stretched out into the ENTIRE PLOT. And, when you think about it, Thor is the ultimate protagonist. Because there are times in most films like this when you root for the monster, right? But not this time, because you can't possibly want for the dog to die. It's like Joe Bob Briggs said once, "you can't kill a dog." You can't help but love an innocent, loyal puppy, the ultimate underdog (ha). There's no one you want to see succeed more. Not to mention the family dynamic is deceptively clever. The dog, an adopted family member, has to fight someone who's actually related to the people he's trying to protect by blood. It's just a cute, clever little movie.

The dog needs his own series of movies where he fights all types of horror monsters. He already fought a werewolf, so a vampire would be good next movie.

This werewolf design is one of the freakiest designs for a werewolf I've seen. When I first saw it just image on the cover alone sent goosebumps and shivers up my spine.

Imagine a "talking dog" movie with this same premise. A bunch of plucky pups find out that lurking in the woods around their master's home is a big mean werewolf. They have to band together with quirky neighbourhood pooches to find out whose behind the howls in the night.

This actually looks like a good werewolf movie. It's a unique take with the dog being a character, with the standard horror/tragedy of most good Werewolf stories.

"I do like the look of the werewolves in this. These are ones that look more wolf-like, and I always appreciate that more than ones that look like stupid ape-things or something." Thank you so much! A proper werewolf is NOT just a hairy guy with big teeth. You need a lupine head, reverse-jointed legs, and a TAIL. So many things don't bother with the tail, especially. I get that just making a hairy guy is easier and is supposed to be an homage to The Wolfman, but when I'm promised a werewolf, I WANT A WEREWOLF.

Actually chihuahuas were bred to be guard dogs, they would protect cemeteries from looters. This is why they bark at everything; that territoriality hasn't been bred out of them. Not saying that one could take out a werewolf anyway but the little badass could probably take the big fucker's paw off first.

The bipedal wolf look is my favorite werewolf design, also. I know the Lon Chaney Jr look is a classic but it always looked dumb to me. As an aside, I also had a dog named Thor when I was growing up, he was a Chow Chow, though.

It was originally NC-17 so they had to cut down the sex and gore. Scream Factory just put out a Blu-Ray with a bunch of new extra's and both cuts of the film.

Shout! Factory actually recently did a release of this on blu-ray, with a fair amount of special features on it. I think the upgrade would totally be up your alley.

I LOVE this movie! I picked up the Blu-ray from Shout Factory. It had some really nice special features and a version of the movie where they cut down on the CGI transformation which helped with the ending.

It's a shame Micheael Pare hasn't done more he was great in this and Eddie and the Cruisers. He's a good actor and pretty easy on the eyes too. Loved the dog! The dog was my favorite character in this movie!

I actually picked up the book and read it in a single damn. It was damn good. It's basically all from the dog's perspective as he kinda pieces together what's going on. I highly recommend it.

It’s crazy. I remember two scenes from this movie- but nothing of the werewolf. Specifically the tv scene and the ending where he’s killed. It took a hot min but I need to rewatch this flick. It’s been long enough that it’ll be a whole new experience.

As a kid I wanted to be Michael pare...the guy deserve more great movies... great actor. Greatest American hero, streets of fire, Eddie and the cruisers... good stuff.

Actually Michael Pare' has a pretty lengthy career. Most notably he was the star of "The Philedelphia Experiment". He has several movies that he his in that have begun pre-production this year, one that is filming this year and a few that are slated for release next year.

Great review for such an underrated werewolf movie. One thing that doesn't make sense to me is that when Thor first sees Ted he is friendly towards him. Wouldn't he have smelled the wolf scent on Ted to begin with. I understand after Thor so the mangled grisly body parts that Thor would be a bit scared of him then, but then in the next scene in the wilderness Thor is lounging with his family and Ted next to his camper with no problems. All that doesn't make much sense.

A Yorkshire Terrier could take out a werewolf. Our Half-Maltese Half-Yorkie (who passed away last summer) was constantly scaring off things much bigger than her: deer, Canada Geese, a Golden Retriever, a German Shepard and two Dobermans. The weird part was she wasn't even trying to be scary. She was the friendliest dog in the world. It's just deer, geese, the Golden Retriever, The Dobermans and the German Shepard were afraid of her. When never found out why.

I really don't mind two-legged werewolves or more human-like ones to be honest because after they're technically still human most of the time, while the more beast-like werewolf designs are awesome and all I think there's a level of likability to a two-legged one. I do get a Goosebumps vibe from the werewolf morph (reminds me of the Creeps in Calling All Creeps). I'm not picky when it comes to werecreatures really. Typically a full moon occurs specifically every 28 days. Also...yes, yes...another movie where an animal defeats the monster, the other of course is Sleepwalkers.

Holy shoot. This actually looks really good... and it opens a potential whole world of possibilities. Like, imagine a whole subgenre of animals starring as the protagonists in horror movies like this? With some good direction and a well-trained animal, I'd love to see a cat take on a vampire or a dog VS a mummy or something. It would be simultaneously the best and most ridiculous thing in the world if the right team could pull it off.

I saw this when i was 16 and at the time i was watching the howling and American Werewolf in London. Bad Moon was my 3rd favorite Werewolf film . It looked good, the story was decent and you got to see the wolf in full view. Underrated film.

I agree completely that this movie doesn't get the respect it deserves. As you two mentioned the cgi is a little bad but the practical effects are pretty damn good. Besides the whole story tells of the loyalty and love a dog has for it's family.

Well..... in folklore werewolves aren't immortal and you don't need silver to kill them. They can die of anything - drowning, disease, old age, so the uncle isn't wrong about a shotgun blast taking them out - the thing is they come back as vampires when they die. Vampires, in folklore, can be killed by silver.

WAAAYYY late to the party but yea I am the somebody who got the Ahmed Johnson reference.... I am not ashamed. That being said I feel like they missed out on doing something cool.with the wolf with the opening taking place in Nepal. I'm not sure what the wolf situation is in South Asia but they could have had a really unique look with it.

If I had known what the basis of this movie was then I would definitely have watched it. All I knew was it was generic looking werewolf movie and it kept coming in second or third for my viewing choices.

hard to believe this movie is only 79 minutes long compared to Joe's Apartment is the same running time and released in that same year as well Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas which's 76 minutes long! and what's worse, "Bad Moon" grossed only $1 Million at the box office making it a critical and commercial failure!

1.if you have a longer morph then you have the extended cut, basically its that longer change, some longer gore and more nudity in the sex scene. 2. apparently the director really did not like working with mariel hemmingway citing that she was lackluster in her performance, he had to make her redo the climax over and over again intil she was pissed enough at him to get the right emotion and 3. this movie REALLY feels like it should have come out a decade before it did.

I have to object that small dogs beating up monsters make perfect sense because of the old adage: it is not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog! ;) A strangely intelligent German Shepherd, clearly Thor is in actuality the Littlest Hobo saving the day yet again. Note throwing someone out a window is defenestration.

I thought the jump scare at the end was not needed. I spent years trying to get a copy of that book. The few times I found it it was priced waaaay too high by fans and collectors. I tried finding it on Kindle and Kobo, but no luck yet.

when thor is fighting the werwolf i always imagine the audio of john mclane (bruce willis) from die hard fighting karl and talking about how he’s going to cook him and eat him for christmas dinner lol
