To play devil's advocate: I'm sure the engineers know that what they created is not a sentient AI capable of dog fighting human pilots. What they were showing off was the results of a reinforcement learning algorithm, and those results are quite impressive. Reinforcement learning is a type of statistical model where the machine tries to maximize it's value from doing specific tasks correctly, in this case the value likely coming from shots on target. The fact that they were able to get this type of model to produce anything that resembles dogfighting, let alone something that "wins" (if you can call it that) is what the achievement really is. So no, it is not AI taking over fighter pilots, but it is a proof of concept that reinforcement learning seems to be a valid way to train a machine how to dogfight, which is pretty interesting.
@isaquesevero4369
@isaquesevero4369 3 жыл бұрын
They use similar stuff in chess as well, like alphazero and Leelachess0, they are a reinforcement learning algorithm that can beat even the most powerful computer engine, Stockfish, against a human is not even a competition, even the Grandmaster can not hope to stand a chance against the later versions of stockfish.

I don’t have DCS and I stumbled on this channel because I’ve watched aircraft videos. I’m very intrigued by your discussion and Ate’s perspective and his depth of knowledge. I’m also intrigued by the value of both of your thinking process to other external factors. Taxpayers, ego, feasibility of technology and expertise. Great discussion. I’m military and I find value in common sense and plain language which is often lacking. Disclaimer. I’m a grunt. I’m a bullet magnet. I know nothing about aviation, nor have I ever played a flight simulator. Not do I understand the thought process and engineering behind aviation. Discussions like this allow the layman a gateway to see things from a fresh perspective and it’s great. Keep it up.

26:19 I like how Até reminds us that it's not actually a game. Anyway if they have auto-dogfight they can also have a auto-eject too. When you engage the auto_dogfight then the pilot assume a position so they are ready for the computer to eject them as soon as the computer is certain enough that a shot will land. And it could also be decided to order the plane to ditch its pilot and allow for any risk taking including using the plane a missile. If an plane is good enough for auto-dogfight it might also be good enough to try to save a plane that would be too damage for the pilot to land it. Winning the godfight might be a strong argument for an AI, sure, but going for mutual destruction and salvaging anything out of a lose is maybe more interesting.

Great stuff GS. These are fascinating videos to watch, especially on a big screen. In the first interview I heard you do with ATE', you were asking him about DCS pilots that think they can do the same thing in a real fighter, and he said it's completely different in real life. It reminded me of when I built my first large scale radio controlled heli. I used a Realflight simulator to learn the basic flight fundamentals. I got good enough on the simulator to put my heli in the air for real, and it was a completely different experience. My heart was pounding out of my chest and my thumbs went dumb worried about crashing.

AWSOME! Coolness meter over the top for the dogfight part, then the interview part is really interesting (lacking superlatives here), very solid content. For my part I want to add that one problem with virtual intelligence is uniformisation. If you find a flaw in IA's way of processing stuff you basically found a flaw in every IA of the same batch/generation. Humans are unoptimised but incredibly polyvalent, relying on them is better imo. You can defeat all IA at once if you found their Achille's heel, but same cannot be expected with humans...

Watching the footage made me think of the common complaints I've heard from real fighter pilots when they play sims. At the top of the list is that the game lacks any kind of 'feel' due to the impossibility of reproducing the effects of G loading, which means the pilot is unable to rely on the muscle memory they've developed over time. The funny part of it all is that an experienced sim player might well have done better with this scenario.

Pretty sure they already have the technology. I was amazed to discover they had means of taking control of aircraft way back in the 60s ! There's also been snippets of new where F16s were being used as wingman/flights around a human aircraft controlled by computer. So what the current state really is, it would be fair to say is in advance of what we know in the public domain.

Thank you for this video discussing some very very important topic. I’d love to hear more about this every year as development progresses. Here is my two cents of opinion. 1) it would be foolish to remove humans from the cockpit. The number one issue in the modern airliner cockpit is related to over dependence on technology and pilots not knowing the basics of how to aviator, navigate, and communist when these systems fail. In my 6000-7000 hours of flight time, 90% of the issues I experienced that required a delay, or a mechanic sign off was software or sensor errors. 2) if an unmanned system is relying on sensors.... that will be the first line of attack by the enemy. 3) data links and satellites are vulnerable. 4) the possibility of espionage, for example the insertion of kill code or code that hands over control of the weapon becomes a possibility. 5) the fighter pilot has always been both an athlete and intellect. This combined with technology will ultimately be the best combination as we move forward. I personally believe systems like the loyal wingman and other supporting unmanned systems will become the norm. The unmanned aircraft and missiles will be the super maneuverable system with the Piloted aircraft being the controller

All that AI taking over from pilots... In the event of an all out war. The first thing that happens is an EM burst that fries electronics, and all those "drones" are useless. You can see this technology that the FAA is in the process of getting approved-- in that in and around busy/major airports, they are going to jam/scramble signals to drone aircraft making them uncontrollable. Automation is great, (when it works) but when you need it the most-- it will fail you.

Getting sensors around the aircraft, probably won't be very far off with the radar and infrared search & track that we already have now. The loyal wingman program sounds kind of like the "Arsenal Plane" plane that's being considered by the DoD. Send in a few stealthy aircraft to spot/track targets and then the missiles are launched from a B-52 that's not in the... wait for it... danger zone! (You'll just have to imagine the Archer voice.)

Sometimes he is making a review of some fights from movies ( in french, idk if he doing it in Ennglish ), and in one of those, he's talking about reducing the heat signature by reducing power to avoid easy Fox2 tracking and better efficiency of flares.

Até's point at 29:30 is not an abstract what-if scenario. If you are curious, look up Stanislav Petrov (1983). Story may have gotten a bit sensacionalized... but probably not to the same degree that the DARPA Dogfight AI competition did.

the simplest example of AI in a mirage 2000 is its fly by wire system; without it the plane can't even take off

The first kill poses a great question - when to eject? Should you wait till the end of the burst? Or just punch out as soon as you can, even if you are ejecting into a burst of rounds hitting the plane? Should you wait, inside the cockpit, where you have something between you and the rounds? Or just punch out as soon as possible?

21:40 What if there ware some fault in the auto-dogfighting system that the enemy could exploit. Then the Pilot passed out and could never rectify it. It seems better the have 1-2 fighters with pilots getting support from some fighter drones as are being developed already. They can be designed to do extreme G maneuvers, take the dogfight for the piloted planes and even block a shot by suiciding if the piloted planes are getting targeted. From my perspective, a high G autopilot for dogfighting could be a thing that took over if the pilot had a blackout or if he decided to bail out of the fight.
