I thought it couldn't be found anywhere because Harvy Weinstein still owns the rights. It wasn't cancelled or anything. Only the catholic church hated on it, but it is probably one of Kevin smiths most well known movies. I know Kevin Smith has said he wishes he could get the rights back so he could do anniversary additions and other stuff. It is just tangled up in the remains of Weinsteins company

If you want more Kevin Smith then you gotta start at the beginning with his first film "Clerks" But his second film is my favorite "Mallrats" Which stars Jason Lee who played Azrael. Then you get into the Jay and silent bob movies, all of his films are pretty much in the same universe so it's cool to connect the dots with character mentions and cameos.

This movie is so underrated...! And an absolute shame it was ignored/cancelled all that time. I am a theologian and pastor (protestant, but they won't hold it against me ;) ) and first watched it in my first year of theological college. Ever since, I come back to it now and then, because it is so funny but also it has a spiritual dimension to it. Even uplifting. It is about faith vs. belief (dogma, or church lore) and shows that human dogma is fallible, and that faith is not about just believing a set of church rules. God is greater than that. She really is beyond the human capacity to understand rationally, and that's where faith comes in. In my opinion, any christian who finds this movie offensive, doesn't understand the movie or doesn't understand christianity. Would love to see more reactors picking up on this film, thanks for sharing your first time reaction!

i feel ya, but all entertainment takes a pretty satirical lens to institutions like religion and government. They can help inform you of some of their flaws, but they are incomplete views. I love Dogma and Good Omens, but I wouldn't judge the Catholic church by them for instance. A two thousand year old institution responsible for almost every hospital, university built for a thousand years and programs to help the poor, the widows, the orphans, and disenfranchised for countless centuries is owed a bit more of an examination than one graphic novel and a 90 minute comedy. I'm not Catholic, but they seem to have done far more good than harm from what I can tell. But that's not sexy so no one talks about it.

@@rockyseverino9230 Well, they were the ones with the power to do that - and the ear of Kings and Lords who they frequently gave license to go to wars, for. Still, a lot of good was done - in an at times, fairly messy way. And also, the Thirty Years War that depopulated whole swathes of rural Europe, but still, errors can be made. And of course, the Inquisition, came somewhat late in the day (as did the Magdalene Laundries) Still, the Catholic Church has a much more positive relationship with, say, astronomy, now.

The film wasn´t cancelled and the stars, to the best of my knowledge, have no regrets about making the film. Most of them have gone on to work in other Kevin Smith films. I´ve met him a couple of times (reaaaally nice guy), and, as far as I know, the only contentious cast member was Linda Fiorentino, and I believe that was more a personal and work attitude clash rather than anything to do with the movie. I´m agnostic, and was working as a host in a cinema when the film came out. I was terrified about any protests like in the States, as in the UK, where I'm from, they had the great idea to release it the day after Christmas. I had a small run-in with two Jehovah´s Witnesses, but nothing more. I´m agnostic, but, oddly, I actually came out the film more spiritual than when I went in. I think the film is actually strongly religious and pro-God (Smith is a man of faith), but anti-religion. Hence the protests. The film is not on streaming as HW still owns the rights, and, since all of the news about his crimes came out, Smith has refused to take a penny in royalties from the films they made together. He's a decent, decent man.

I've been waiting for this reaction all week. :-) The key to this movie, I think, is that Kevin Smith was raised Catholic, and I believe still considered himself a Catholic when he made the film. It was really a working through of a lot of his ideas and questions about the church, and it's certainly not anti-God. Smith has said he cried when Alanis played him "Still," the song she sings over the credits ("I see you and your selective amnesia, I see you averting your glances, I see you cheering on the war, And I love you still, I love you still"), because it captured something about what he believed.

totally, and there's some "deep cuts" religiously so to speak. The Metatron, the Watchers etc. The actual ritual that is the central conflict of the film. This was not written by an ignorant man. This is way more than surface level stuff. I still bump into the idea that God could be trapped in a human body, but if that didn't happen there wouldn't be a movie, so i just ignore that whenever my logical brain is like, does that make sense? The movie is too fun for that lol

This film was not "canceled". The reason that no streaming services have it has more to do with all of the Harvey Weinstein legal problems than "cancel culture". When the film was made, Kevin Smith was working exclusively through Miramax Pictures, which was owned by Disney. Given the subject of 'Dogma', the Catholic League got involved and protested that a family-friendly company like Disney would release a film like this. However, the founders of Miramax, Harvey & Bob Weinstein believed in the film and in Kevin Smith. It was the Weinsteins who had discovered Smith and his first film 'Clerks' (which features Jay and Silent Bob). So, the Weinsteins bought the film from Miramax and released it through another company called Lionsgate. The Catholic League seeing Disney no longer had an interest, dropped the protests even though the film was still released...and the Weinsteins made a boatload of money. 'Dogma' is actually one of Smith's most financially successful films. Around 2008, Smith made a film that bombed and since Weinstein was an unforgiving sort when it came to box office bombs ('Zack and Miri Make a Porno' or 'Zack And Miri') Weinstein and Smith fell out for about a decade. In 2018, the #MeToo movement started with the bombshell of Harvey Weinstein's sexual predator behavior, and the fallout was felt across the entertainment industry. 'Dogma' was tied up in the holdings of The Weinstein Company, Bob and Harvey's production company. Just one week before the shitstorm happened Harvey called Kevin Smith offering him a chance of a 'Dogma' sequel. This was most likely a way for Weinstein to circle his wagons and see what kind of support he could count on before the story of his vile exploits got out...exploits that now have him in jail. Kevin Smith has distanced himself from the Weinsteins and spoken out against them, especially Harvey for the stuff he did. He even pledged monthly support to Women In Film, an organization that helps women behind the camera get their films made. He loves 'Dogma' as it was a way for him to work out his own sense of faith when he was feeling lost. And the film really is about faith, what we believe and how we believe, and what belief is meant to be.

This movie is part of Kevin Smith's A View Askewniverse which started with Clerks. In a way, you will have a better understanding of this and other Smith movies if you watch them all in chronological order. Jay and Silent Bob are recurring characters, and have their own movies. Some of the original Clerks cast cameo in most of Smith's movies and sometimes play the same characters. Start with Clerks, onto Mallrats, maybe Chasing Amy, Dogma then Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, then Clerks 2 (very different from Clerks), jay and Silent Bob Reboot, which should line you up with the upcoming Clerks 3. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/View_Askewniverse

This movie has never been cancelled. I've seen movies way worse than this. Apparently you can't find it because of something to do with Harvey Weinstein owning the rights. Canceling stuff is a pretty modern thing that has only really been happening for less than a decade. Films used to get banned years ago but it had more to do with extreme violence and or sexual content of an extreme nature. This film never even came close to being banned but it did piss off religious people. Kevin Smith's parents were very religious and I don't think they had a problem with it. You should look up Kevin Smith being interviewed when he was at a protest against the film. The film crew didn't realize who he was and he just goes along with it 🤣🤣

He has one recurring character, Holden McNeil from Chasing Amy, J&SB Strike Back & Reboot. He and Matt Damon reprise their Chuckie Sullivan and Will Hunting roles from Good Will Hunting in J&SB Strike Back, so he plays two characters in that one making up for missing out on Clerks, I guess.

do they actually play those characters in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back? Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that they play themselves on a movie set playing those characters? But yes, Ben has at least two (maybe three if we count mallrats) characters. I don't think the mallrats character he played has ever made a reappearance tho. Probably still trying to lure underage girls into that volkswagen. Which are notoriously uncomfortable from what i understand.

You do realise you stepped into the middle of the whole realm of Jay and Silent Bob.. This has now pretty much compelled you to see CLERKS, MALLRATS, CHASING AMY, JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKES BACK, CLERKS II, JAY AND SILENT BOB REBOOT and upcoming CLERKS III? I can't speak for most of the cast, but Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Kevin Smith have a history of collaboration and friendship. Somewhat later the late, great George Carlin also seemed to become a part of the Jay and Cilent Bob circle, which was probably quite natural. IN the series this film is probably the highest profile dig that the Jay and Silent Bob series have achieved, but they're all great in some way or form. There's a certain something about the logic that they bring to the material they write which is delightfully anarchic, hence the pliability of this towards George Carlin's vociferous truth telling.

Kevin Smith is a very different type of director. He built his own way up by self-financing the ultra low budget CLERKS by maxing out his own credit cards. His films have a very DIY feeling to them. CLERKS 2 is one of my favorite films of all time.
@radwolf76
@radwolf76 2 жыл бұрын
"maxing out his own credit cards." -- To hear Smith tell the story, he also had more credit cards with higher credit limits then by any rights he should have had at the time, considering he was a struggling film student. He'd fill out the credit card application forms and would put down the phone number of the video store he was working at. When the card issuer would call, asking about the application, he'd answer the phone, giving some name other than Kevin, and so when they said they needed to verify the income that had been submitted on the form, he'd tell them "Kevin Smith? Yeah, he owns this video store and a few others. He's absolutely making that much a year in profit, if not more." Of course, even with that, the entire budget for Clerks ended up being less than the budget to make the music video for Soul Asylum's song "Can't Even Tell", which had been on the Clerks soundtrack. The band had Smith recreate one of the memorable scenes from the movie, except in color.

This is an amazing movie, mostly because of how well the performances sell the story. There's very little in the way of special effects, but you buy it all anyway. Take the scene with the Mooby executives for example. No special effects, just dialogue and good writing. And yet what's happening is totally fantastical. Same with when Loki and Bartleby are arguing in the garage. They totally sell the drama. It's like watching a play.

This has to be one of my favorite movies. Honestly, I don't know why it would be "cancelled". Sure, it might not be for everyone but that's what movies are. I don't care for horror movies so I don't go and see them. If you're a highly religious person and you're going to be really sensitive to your religion being poked fun at then maybe DON'T go see this movie. I thought it was hilarious and I hate the fact that you can't see this on any streaming services. Sure, I have it on DVD but I've gotten so used to streaming stuff that putting a DVD in is just too much work. haha I also find it a little bit funny because I know a ton of Catholics and Christians got really upset about the idea of this movie (so many didn't even watch it yet protested it all the same) but me, as a life-long atheist, this movie is probably the closest thing that got me to considering any of it to be true. It was a really entertaining story and I kind of liked the idea of that stuff going on out there. Not the murder and all of that but just the whole backstory and those beings seeming more real. And funny. Obviously didn't do enough because I still don't believe in any of that stuff. If no one has mentioned it yet this movie is actually part of a series of movies. They don't really have all that much to do with each other so it's not like you need to see one to understand the next, but some will take place in a similar area or make slight references to each other. On top of that a lot of them will share actors in different roles and a lot of those roles are filled by the director's (Keven Smith) friends. Ben Affleck he's been friends with since they worked on Mallrats (another movie in this series), he helped him and Matt Damon on Good Will Hunting and was close to him too, his friend and producer Scott played the guy on the bus who got shot, two of his other friends play protesters (as the same characters from Mallrats), one of his friends is the reporter on TV, and Jason Lee he knew since he was in Mallrats. Not to mention he plays Silent Bob and Jay is basically a character based off of his friend Jason... who plays Jay. Honestly, I think you should watch all of his movies. They're not all "cancel-worthy" mockeries of religion. They'd probably get cancelled for something else but Dogma was the main target.

I'm religious and i've always loved this movie. I've always been kind of surprised people were so triggered by this movie at the time. I think it's actually done in good fun, and I don't really see a criticism of the faith itself, only some of the institutions around it. That's not the same thing in my opinion, and institutions should be criticized to keep them from getting bent and rotten. That can happen to anything, including the church.
@MysterClark
@MysterClark 2 жыл бұрын
@@rockyseverino9230 Historically the church held a large amount of power. Power is something that can easily corrupt. So really the church is something that should have REALLY been watched to prevent such a thing but I don't think we did and so things got worse. I understand having something you love and then not being a fan when people make fun of it. I'm a huge Star Wars fan and I used to get a bit "triggered" when people would make fun of it. But over time I learned that people had different points of view and they're really there to just entertain people (who probably already think like them) and so I just ignored it instead. Or actually listened sometimes and considered their critiques. I never DREAMED of protesting or boycotting something because they made fun of my precious Star Wars. (I realize a movie franchise and religion are a bit different but the idea should be the same)

What is really strange is that as much as it pokes fun at Catholicism, it has some pretty positive messages about religion. I love Chris Rocks character sayong something to the effect of it being better to have ideas instead of beliefs, since you can change an idea, learn something new, and evolve. I feel like it pokes fun more at branches of Christianity, and specific kinds of Christians, for straying from the core path of their own religion. How many have twisted the messages of Christ over the centuries. And seeing as this is coming from me (an agnostic) if i can find this uplifting in a spiritual sense then Kevin Smith succeeded......or failed, depending on what he intended. :P

i always liked Dogma, i get it's not for everyone, but hey, it's a comedy. It's supposed to be irreverant since you're a star wars fan you should watch his next movie called Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. It's my favorite Kevin Smith film. Most people would probably say Clerks tho I don't think it's "banned" per se. I think the rights are just murky with Miramax and everything, but it was controversial obviously As for why they accepted these roles I'll tell you the story. Ben Affleck in his first role was in Kevin Smith's second movie, Mallrats. They became very close friends and he's been in several Kevin Smith movies. But Ben and Mat wrote a movie called Good Will Hunting. Ben and Mat both won the oscar that year for best screen play, it essentially made both their careers. Well Kevin Smith being friends with Ben Affleck talked the heads of Miramax into making the film, he's the reason it happened, they took a shot on these two essentially unknowns, and it made a ton of money, it won everyone oscars including Robin Williams with his only Oscar win, and so of course when Kevin asked them to be in his next movie only a year later... would you have said no? Plus everyone loves Kevin. He may not be the greatest film maker of all time, but he's a pretty great guy, and as you can see, he swings for the fences, he tries new things, he isn't making just the next hollywood cookie cutter movie, whatever he does, is going to be interesting, and at that time he was thought to be possibly a big up and comer himself after Clerks and Mallrats, and then Dogma, Chasing Amy, (also staring Ben Affleck, and remember he was in Mallrats, so basically Ben was in Kevin's first three movies, then in the in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, then in Jersey Girl etc. They have a very long history together. In fact the house Kevin has lived in since the late nineties... He bought from Ben! He lives in Ben's old house! Which had a batcave in it....). So I think that explains why at least Ben and Mat were in the movie, and essentially these were exciting people to work with in the late nineties, so you could also get Alan Rickman (you say snape, i say Hans Gruber), Selma Hayak, George Carlin, Chris Rock etc. Anyway, i hope this wasn't too boring to read, and i adored the reaction! (still hoping you do the rest of the Bourne Trilogy!)

The reason why Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are in this movie is that Kevin Smith pretty much started their careers in his second movie "Mallrats" when no one else would really give them a chance. Yes there careers didn't really kick off fully until they wrote and stared in "good Will hunting" but without Kevin they may never have got their foot in the door. Both of them have been a few of Smith's other films as they are still friends ish. The other cast joined really because of them and smith at the time was considered one of the best up and coming writer directors. This is probably my favourite of his.
