Only negative thing about chesapeakes is when they pass on you will be devastated.. These are the most loveable dogs. Lost mine a few weeks ago and can't stop thinking about him.

From infancy onward I grew up with Chessies and they are incredibly smart, affectionate and loyal. I could say so many good things about this breed. They truly give meaning to the phrase "man's best friend".

Keep hearing how this is the best dog. This dog is not for everyone, but for the right owner it is a good dog .

I miss mine. Everybody loved him. I'd walk down the street and kids I didn't even know would call out his name. He was like a local celebrity.

I grew up with a Chesapeake/lab mix, who treated my brothers and I like her pups. So protective, such a motherly dog. She would walk my brother to our neighbors house when he was 2, wait outside until he was done playing, and then walk him back down the street to my house. Such a beautiful fantastic dog. I miss you, Chessie!

If anyone lives in California and wants one, I highly recommend desert winds chessies. Their dogs have great care, great genetics, and are bred to be friendly. They're a great breeder.

I'm on my 3rd Chessie since 1980. A more fiercely loyal, intelligent animal, you will never find. I thought I was a natural dog trainer (until I got my Bull Terrier) because the Chessies work so hard at understanding and executing what their masters want. They make great house dogs as long as you work them in some way. That said, a Chessie could pine away if separated from his/her people; this dog is your dog for life. I'll never not have one.

I have a chessepeak mixed with a silver lab. Luckily he has the lab temperament and being mixed with the 2 greatest retreavers of all time that's all he loves for. Awesome dog!

i have a chessie and they are actually really great dogs. they are very loyal to there owners. the only problem with them, yes, is there aggression but they can be tamed down quite a bit and can be considered almost as calm as a lab

My family has had 2 Chessies. They are the best hunting dogs out there. If you want to keep them from smelling, you either have to bathe them every 2 weeks with strong shampoo or if they go to swim every 3 days, they are fine. Jake and Rio (our dogs) are amazing hunters, very soft mouths, quick on land and water, amazing nose. Both were sent away for 3 months for hunting training and worked amazing. They are very obedient and very loving. Rio is very protective of me

My dad once had one. Whenever he would take the dog to the lake, the dog would jump in after whoever/whatever was in the water, and "rescue" them/it.

My brother's Chessie learned to splash while swimming.... It's hilarious though. He's nearly upright in the water while splashing with his front paws.

The Chesapeake are amazing dogs with a quirky lovable personality. They are easily trainable if you are consistent and patient and use positive reinforcement (petting and tell them how good they are) If you get frustrated and try to force them to do something and the dog hasn't figured it out they can become stubborn and dig in their heels so to speak due to the fact that they are highly intelligent. Simple things of saying a command like "sit" once and if the dog doesn't do it you don't say it again over and over you make them do it and say it once then reward. This simple thing establishes that dominance with the dog also and with positive reinforcement builds that bond and it will become second nature for your dog. Chesapeake's are strong willed independent dogs but if you assert your place in the pecking order they are the greatest lovable, loyal, protective, hard working dogs out there. I think it is also important to socialize the dogs and introduce them to many situations when they are young which helps them with their temperament. I would never have a different dog then my Chesapeakes!

I'm going to the next retriever dog show in my area so I'll get to experience the fur then, but I figure those dogs will be pretty meticulously groomed so I really appreciate your input!

They are an independent-thinking breed, as the video suggest, making them very hard to train. It takes a lot of training and, more importantly, patience, to make them do what you want them to do. They are generally a one-person dog.

I have a dog that is 1/4 chocolate lab. 1/2 Australian Kelpie, 1/8 English Mastiff, 1/8 Shar Pei. After he takes a swim he is completely dry within 5 minutes.

@SaraD2557 Thank you Sara. We are thinking of getting a female Chessie (spayed) when our male Kuvasz pup (neutered) gets older and settles down a bit. We will only be engaging her in water-based retrieving activities and in hiking trips, no hunting.

I love this breed :) First dog I ever had (wouldn't recommend them as a first-time dog to get though, my family wasn't dog-savvy and just kinda brought a puppy home one day). Eventually my family revolved around these dogs and we even bred some of them.

Extremely loyal dogs with a lot of character! Although they don't have the calmest temperament, it's so easy to fall lin love with them. If you pay attention to the video, the video quality shouldn't be a big deal.

My Chesapeake Bay Retriever came from Pond Hollow Kennels. She has a loving personality, is a wonderful family member, hunts waterfowl, is chocolate brown, loves ocean waves and is a very happy dog. But, she sheds like crazy, almost killed our neighbor's cat, suffers from hip dysplasia, barks constantly and has relentless energy. She has intense focus, high energy, is a strong dog, is on a daily joint supplement, and a powerful chest.

Stone broke kennels in Montana has an amazing hunting line of springers and Chessies, both rio and jake are from the breeder Tim. Amazing blood line through those dogs. Would not want another hunting dog or friend in the world.

Chessies are very intelligent animals. Mine had me trained to give him biscuits on demand. He treed a bear once. Very protective of his littermates (my human children) Wouldn't own any other dog.

Weekly brushing?!?! Hahahaha yeah right!!!! My room mate has a dead grass chessie and I’m brushing him 2 times a day. He’s got a good diet, gets fed twice a day his morning feed he gets an egg in his food and the night feeding he gets fish oil in his food, he is an awesome dog, he never quits playing fetch, loves to hunt loves the kids, and is even pretty good with my cat. He’s a good 90 lbs and lots of power. I my self thought about getting a chessie but after watching this extremely staticky video I’m too much of a push over for a chessie.

I have a mated pair, Randy and Sabrina. Very sweet with the family and with kids but they don't​ like strangers at all.

I use to have a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. His name was Chester. Until he had cancer and died in 2006. And i still miss him. well at least he bite any more people riding bikes. At least he is in doggy heaven now. :(

A chessie was my first dog, he was a great dog. But he got sick, at about 4 years of age, and I was away at the time too. So he just left the house and died elsewhere, when my dad found him there was vomit and poop everywhere from where he died. Too be honest I was devastated, when I found out, and couldn't be bothered with any other dog my parents got me. I miss him dearly.

Wrong. They "Jump" into water, not "Dive". They don't like to go underwater. Black Lab's can dive, but Chessie's won't. They can swim all day long, tho! My dog, Smokey, is the best dog I ever had, or ever will! He is very aggressive toward other male dogs, and that can be a problem. He also doesn't tolerate kids well. He does loves my kids. Very protective of his peeps. Hate coyotes with a passion! Ignores ducks. Multiple stick retriever. Incredible jumper. Super strong. For sure the Alpha Dog!

summary: aggressive bread that is mean to most strangers. mostly a working dog or in a rural setting on large property. don't buy this dog. get a lab which is 10x better for nearly everyone.

Horrible video quality. Probably recorded with an on screen recorder app, like Screencast, from another site. Anywho, my family had a male pure bred Chessy. Aside from swimming, oily smelly fur, and the health issues, he was totally atypical for his breed. He was 40% smaller than the average for a male, scared of everything (especially gunfire and fireworks), loved strangers and other dogs (our house was robbed and he apparently begged for treats the whole time), and was dumber than a hamer bag
