I just had my Labrador eat my Thanksgiving ENTIRE Sweet potato pie and I thought enough is enough. I went to the bathroom for a minute maybe a minute and a half and I came out and thought, wow that pie smells delicious and then I thought no way!!! She jumped up on a five foot armoire and grabbed one of the handles from a cooling bag and undid the plastic lid and ate the entire pie and licked the rim!!! Like if I don't leave a trace,maybe she'll forget she brought a pie. Then I went to utube and they said labs have an inherent gene to search for food, im like, there's some form of behavior modification, you just don't know it!!! So this video is a Christmas gift to me and my four animals. God bless you and continue please to share your wisdom. Thank God the universe has not run out of pie yet!!! Happy Holidays. Cheers.

This is such a practical step-by-step episode. My puppy doesn’t countersurf but she does go to the dishwasher so I close it and I do give her pieces of food in the kitchen. That’s all stopping now. Thank you Susan!

Let me preface, I enjoy Susan's podcasts so much that I like to take notes and get the most out of what she has to say. Pardon the length of this comment, but I think this was a great podcast and had some fantastic points. Gems: 3 approaches to dog training: Hope & Ignore, manage (lock dog away or lock food away) and training. Quite a lot of dog challenges occur when there aren't clear boundaries or clear expectations on the part of the dog. We're about to change those expectations when it comes to the kitchen and food. Train the appropriate thing for the dog to do when you go into the kitchen to prepare food: the expectation is that they go to their bed automatically. In order to do this we may need to modify the behaviour chains that have been previously established. Step 1: be present to what's happening - irritation is motivation - the best way to do it is to prevent it from ever happening - don't wait until you have a problem. (My understanding for the steps for rehab - a little modified and organized from how I watched this podcast): #1 Manage the behaviour by not leaving any food on the counter, if your dog puts their paws up on the counter or lifts up to see what's on the counter, you are not going to say anything, just grab by the collar, walk them outside the kitchen to their HZ, not going to give them a cookie when they get there but if they stay there for a minute or two they can earn a reward. #2 Change your behaviour - if you're eating a sandwich you're not going to break off a piece and give it to your dog (This is going to help instil clarity for your expectations.) #3 IYC - play itsyerchoice 5,6,7 times per day then go to #4 teach the HZ - teaching your dog to want to lie in a location outside the kitchen you have deemed reinforcing is called the hot zone. #5 play IYC beside the HZ, you wait until they jump into the HZ and give them cookies there. #6 now IYC is going to happen near the counter - you are going to drop a tidbit of food from the counter, the dog is going to dive for it, you're just going to cover it with your foot. You might keep doing that until they back away, when they back away pick up the cookie go near their HZ play IYC near the HZ until they jump in. *(Important note: if you have more than one dog, do these exercises one dog at a time.) #7 2/3 times per day put your dog on leash and walk through the kitchen (with clean counters) if you see your dog look up to smell your going to pause and wait and when they stop, you're going to praise them. Gradually over a week or two you might start putting good smelly things up there waiting for them to look at them and then when they look away, go straight to HZ and get reinforced there. Thank you so much for this episode, i am going to put this into practice to ensure the sanity of dinnertime for humans as well as canines.

Love your insight & stories. Reminded me of when I was in grade school & we had a dog & a cat. My Mom tried to stop food stealing by putting their pet food in the oven (instead of the closet, the counters, etc). We’d still come home to dog & cat food on the floor. Curious, I stayed behind, waiting & watching. The cat hung on the oven door & went inside - she threw out the dog food first (smart girl), then helped herself to her own food. Our animals are so creative & amazing! Thank you for all you do. I always share your lessons.💕

Thanks, I’ve had dogs all my life . My puppy is the first dog that has counter surfed. It had me scratching my head. I realized that I had never had to teach a dog not to steal things off the counter. Your explanation was perfect and I’m confident I can lick this problem behavior easily. So glad I found you!

So I'm just slightly past the midway point of this poscast; I'm in the kitchen finishing something and of course that's when I have a "but first" moment and go into the other room for maybe all of 30 seconds leaving some doggie treats pushed far back on the counter. I come back to find my 75 lb. pitty on hind legs attempting to grab a mouthful while his 75 lb. pitty girlfriend silently sits watching. He takes one embarrassed look at me and the both of them high tail it into the other room. This was a first for either of them. I laughed to myself and said i need to hurry & finish the video... All I can say is, your podcast couldn't have come at a better time. THANK YOU!!!

My younger Dobe did this one time. My bad, didn't even think about it really. He came inside after eliminating in the am and flew upstairs to the kitchen where he promptly knocked off his bowl of food from the counter. It took me longer to get up the stairs and have to admit I did yell. Never touched him. Said fine, that's where you can eat the rest of your breakfast - off the floor, no dish. Not only did he never do it again, have to brag that a whole bag of treats fell off the fridge while we were out of the house one time years later. The bag was never touched when we got home, the bag was still sitting where it fell. Such a smart boy - what a good decision! Not sure even my picky Dobe would've let that one alone. I know we'd have remnants with my Beagle/JRT mix. The older Dobe might sniff, but I will say, just because you can reach it, doesn't mean it's yours. My chow hound, the Beagle/JRT mix, recently got about 4 pieces of liverwurst off the counter. Again, my bad. Get used to the dog that's normally in the kitchen not doing anything and you forget about the dogs passing through the kitchen to get to the living room. Now, I throw a lick mat in her hot zone while I get the younger Dobe back in the house. Now, the Beagle/JRT mix goes directly to the hot zone from being let back in the house so she can be rewarded for making a better choice. It's awesome! TY Susan Garrett!

My 4-year old mutt is really great at IYC, and following these suggestions I have now taught her to go to her hot zone when I'm fixing food. She's good as gold ... until I leave her home alone! I am single and she's an only dog (only pet in fact). I'm pretty sure she simply gets bored when I leave for any length of time. I can crate her for a short absence but it feels harsh to crate her for hours on end just to keep her out of trouble. The last time I left her alone, I shut her in a good-sized part of the house that does not include the kitchen, and left the door open into the garage so she could let herself out into the yard. She found the backstock of dog food on a shelf in the garage, tore a hole in the bottom of the bag and helped herself. Another time she found the (closed) container of coprophagia 'treats' and ate all that were left (at least I know she won't be eating that poo!). She's been known to get into a bag of plastics recycling and shred it just because one of the bags used to contain food. The question is: how can I train her to stay out of things when I'm not around and she's just bored? I try to manage the environment, but clearly miss things.

We have only been teaching our dogs to be in their “hot zone” while we’re cooking for 3 days and today my pup intentionally went to his hot zone as soon as I opened the fridge! I’m blown away! 🤯

This is such an important video! Since we’ve never had a problem with our rescue dog of three months counter surfing - I had not watched this video until just now as part of HSTD. The critical link of how you use ItsYerChoice to stop the dog from picking up things that might be dropped on the floor or found on the trail is “hidden” in this video starting at around 13:00. Maybe you could point people to this video as part of ItsYerChoice. I had never understood how to transfer the lesson of ItsYerChoice to not eating things he finds on the floor/ground. Thanks for another very important video!

I am taking the Home School the Dog course taught by Susan and even after 1 week I have a much better understanding of how to shape my dogs behavior. My 8.5 lb maltipoo has learned how to jump onto the DR table. After 2 VERY scary trips to the Vet, one on Christmas Eve, and the next yesterday, (I was using the HOPE method and attempting and failing at the The MANAGE METHOD,) I am now using the IYC shaping method. I have confidence in this method after watching and rewatching Susan's class. My pup is still not fully recovered so I will have to wait a day or two before implementing but this is the first method I have found that actually makes real sense. I feel terrible that I let this happen to my pup and will make this my only work for the next 2 weeks, because her life literally depends on it.

I shared this video link with someone in a FB group, who wanted to know how to stop counter surfing, because I’ve been working It’s Yer Choice with my 2 pups for about 2 wks and had some progressive results. Right after sharing your link, I went to feed my 2 pups. I keep both their dog food containers in the laundry room in one of those stackable Vittles Vaults. They each have their own container/food. Before playing It’s Yer Choice, they would follow me into the laundry room and it’d be utter chaos! Trying to spin the vault lid to open it, fill one dog bowl and then the other and juggle their dog bowls to the kitchen with 2 dogs trying to get their nose into the vault, trying to snatch some food from the first filled dish while I’m getting the 2nd one filled…and then BOTH of them jumping up on me on my way to the kitchen. CHAOS ON STEROIDS 😂!!! After teaching them It’s Yer Choice for a couple of weeks, they both had gotten so much better. Well, right after sharing the link with someone, there was a GAME CHANGER! It was like a light went on and they were like “I got this!” They were calm in the laundry room, and most importantly, I was ABLE to set the first FILLED dish at NOSE LEVEL FOR THEM on a table, close up the first vault, spin the 2nd lid to open that one, fill the 2nd dish and spin that lid shut, while they sat waiting for me PATIENTLY. Then we went into the kitchen, where before, I’d have to be a Ninja, trying to keep the dishes from being knocked out of my hands from 2 jumping fur balls. 😂 I told them to sit in the kitchen and OFF THEY WENT! I got there and they were BOTH sitting nicely on the kitchen floor. I laid each of their bowls by their side, and they both waited until I told them to “break” I was seeing all kinds of unicorns in my head! 😂 It’s Yer Choice is an ABSOLUTE GAME CHANGER for me!

I am doing the homeschool the dog program with my 6 month old Heeler/Aussie mix (Female). Background: This is my third behavior/ training program with her…one in person specifically for working dogs and one online. My vet recently started her on medication for hyperactivity and mild aggression ( not at other dogs). She gets daily exercise and training. She was very quickly successful with IYC; however, she has just recently started counter surfing ( because she has discovered that her paws will reach that far) I understand that I should do the collar grab and lead her out of the kitchen but that is not an option right now. I have been working on collar conditioning since I got her ( at two months). She is fine if I’m just petting her, or holding the collar, but the minute I try to lead her she becomes aggressive . (I haven’t given up; we are still working on it). I have tried turning my body against her and calmly claiming my space and she becomes agitated and snaps at me, but she does get down. I do reward her for laying outside the kitchen, either on the floor or on her elevated bed. She is 27 lbs and very strong. Any other suggestions for how I can handle the counter surfing before it goes any further? Thanks, and I am enjoying this program and the responsibility it puts on the dog to make good choices.

My dog taught me about behavior chaining when she learned how to whine from a dog in her agility class. I thought, "This will be a great opportunity to teach her the 'quiet' command!" So I'd wait until she was quiet and I would capture it, "Good quiet!" Well of course she immediately figured out that in order to be quiet, first I have to whine. It took me a week to figure out that I had unintentionally made her "be bad to be good." I stopped rewarding her for quiet, and she immediately stopped the whining behavior... and I learned something new about dog training! 😂

My dog is not a counter surfer, but he does go into the kitchen once we sit down to eat to sniff and lick the floors looking for crumbs. He often has his nose to the ground whether in the home or out on walks looking for things to eat. We’ve been working on IYC and he does well some of the time (especially when he can tell we’re in training mode), but then other times he might just decide to grab something he sees on the ground (this can be right after multiple successful IYC moments with the same temptation on the ground/scenario). It feels like he is choosing to be cooperative sometimes and then other times he just wants what he wants, but I’m know it’s a training issue. Back to the kitchen situation - if I teach him to go to his hot zone during cooking and our dinner time, I suspect that once we are done that he’d just go into the kitchen to look for crumbs once he’s released to move around the house freely so I may just be delaying his behavior. Any advice on how I could improve my training or what I might be doing wrong? I should also add that he has a severe autoimmune disease that requires him to take a lot of medications including prednisone which I know can make dogs want to eat more. But Radar is a good boy most of the time and very trainable, so I do believe we can work through this.

One of my dogs doesn't always surf the counter, but will jump up and take things off the kitchen table like socks I just sorted to put away or my husband's hankies. Sometimes it's towels and then he'll chew them. Ugh! I know we've taught our dogs some bad things after watching this, so have to go back to the drawing board!

I made the mistake of hiding some kibble around the living room on two occasions when my puppy was younger to keel her occupied. Now she patrols the living room constantly still looking for food. Its hard for her to relax and settle unless she is in her crate or in her safe room ( our sunroom) if she is out in the house she is patroling for food or jumping up to look on the counters. 😢

Because I've done IYC for 10 years while doing Puppy Peaks, I, every evening, load all 10 dog dishes with food and it's all left on the counter for first thing in the morning meal. Hmmmm. Now we've gone many years like this and to this day, no one steals from those dishes. Howevah! Enter 4-1/2 year old Golden boy who was born here and 1-1/2 year old new girl Golden, both of whom have played IYC since puppies. Obviously they walk by the counter and sniff to see if anything better than dog food is up there and if there is ... yup! Stolen! Thanks for this advice. Now to work 4 Goldens (3 really as the oldest can't jump up anymore), one at a time and find them Hot Zones. Thanks!

Please help with Outdoor Counter Surfing! Thank you for all these amazing videos you put out for us. I am new to your channel, and trying to find some guidance for our 2 year old English Lab who (surprise!) loves scavenging outside. We have been teaching him "drop it" which he mastered indoors but of course it's not working outside (or rather it makes the walks very annoying). Watching these videos I realized that now we probably have double trouble because of the unintentional reinforcement... So where/how do we start to back track or move forward?

This is so helpful as I'm already seeing this behavior in our new puppy. Question on using hot zone...we are still in the early stages of Home School the Dog and Crate Games so we haven't built in Hot Zone yet. Her crate and Xpen area is right off the kitchen though. Should I use her crate with the door open as her Hot Zone for now? I had previously heard that jumping to Hot Zone before Crate Games is mastered can cause some problems. Thanks!

And my husband likes sugar cubes in his coffee. When I fill the sugar bowl, my 75 lb Lab gets one cube. She’s there, lickity split to get one (only one!). Loves chopping vegetables too. I guess that’s why she’s so unreliable when we aren’t present. She’s 9 so I guess we’ve trained her that way. Haha. There may be hope for the 9 month old 65 lb Lab. My dog licks the dishwasher as I load it. Should I use the collar removal to hot zone at that point? Reward only if she stays on mat?

Don't have counter surfers but will do more IYC with Hot Zone together but Love the Fred and Wilma story and though definite steak and live on potatoes, would have passed on seconds too just because of that 😀 ❤❤❤⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

When the dog is brought to the hot zone, do you then reinforce them with any treats, or just verbal praise?

Hot Zone is a lesson within in our Home School the Dog so we share layers of learning to help the dog - find value, understand to stay on and when they can release, all built in a joyful way and yes, with treats to build value and then we work up to other parts of the lesson where the joy is a big part of the game. Hi Susan, We have a classic counter surfer, a year old (stubborn) smart, sweet Miniature Dachshund. We are working on your advice on how to turn this around. My problem is that the dog, Edward, gets wrestling with the cat, Nigel (who is a big 12 pound "street kid) and when Nigel gets fed up, he simply leaps onto the table to get away from Edward. I know that dogs are like kids, "Nigel gets up on the table, therefore it's ok for me to get up on the table". This is a real problem for us. I have no idea how to stop a cat getting up on the table when he's been doing this most of his life. Is it possible to train Edward to stop doing this, even if Nigel is still doing it? Nigel never steals food, he has no interest in our food. He just sits there, out of reach (temporarily) from Edward. HELP!

Hmmmm, counter surfing is not about food. It was scissors, or a towel or anything he can run off & play with. That is any place around the house not just kitchen counters????

Hi, could the "hot zone" be in the kitchen. We have a combined kitchen/eating area and currently she has a bed, which we call her "place" in the eating area. We've trained her in "go to your place," with varying degrees of success, but generally she'll go to her "place" while I'm cooking and sometimes while we're eating, but it doesn't necessarily last as long as we would like. Since she already has a "place," could we keep that place, or should I move it outside the "kitchen." Backstory: she's a 10 month old Australian Labradoodle who counter and table-surfs (and gets extremely excited and jumps on guests-but that's another issue). For other things, she's well-behaved, but counter-surfing and jumping are the two issues I'm currently focusing on. BTW, I am enrolled in your program.

Susan I'm curious, for dinner time do you toss treats to their hot zones? We're hesitant to even look at our dog during dinner time in case he starts thinking dinner time is treat time and becomes pest... but i would love him to be in his bed while we're at the table

Great information but too much chatter surrounding it. It would be great if you broke your videos int chapters (as other trainers do). That way , I can jump to the pertinent information and find it again as reference. Thank you for your videos.
