There is one thing that you can do easily to help overcome any dog training challenge you might have. That one thing is something I’ve been talking about and doing for 30 years. It’s record keeping! Keeping a journal for your dog is not as hard as you might think, and it will fast track your success.
00:20 Overcome dog training challenges.
01:49 Record keep your dog training for faster results.
02:18 What gets measured gets managed.
02:34 How I overcame my puppy’s resource guarding.
02:54 Beware labels defining your dog.
04:58 Jean Donaldson advice, “Is the dog upset?”
05:43 Address the dog’s emotional state first.
06:32 Triggers: Counterconditioning and Desensitization
07:36 Eliminate rehearsals of unwanted behavior.
09:24 You can’t dog train emotions.
10:42 What to track in your dog training journal.
12:57 Evaluate and notice patterns around dog’s behavior.
13:22 Celebrate the big and little victories.
14:21 Is the dog’s behavior emotional?
15:04 Creating harmony in a multi-dog household.
15:42 When to see a veterinary behaviorist.
16:34 Dogs have limited ways of communicating with us.
16:54 When to get a reinforcement-based dog trainer evaluation.
In the episode you'll hear:
• What labels can do to our dogs.
• How I journaled This!’s resource guarding and why it helped fast track success.
• What to keep track of when you are record keeping.
• Why to ask the question Jean Donaldson recommends: Is your dog upset?
• When to focus on your dog’s emotional state.
• What will create a ticking time bomb for your dog and how to avoid it.
• About counter conditioning to help your dog.
• The importance of eliminating rehearsals of behavior you want to change.
• Why dog training alone is not always the answer.
• About fear responses in dogs.
• Why to include what your dog does well in your journaling.
• What I learned about This! by record keeping and why she now has a middle of the day nap.
• About the way record keeping showed me what happens at the top of the stairs.
• How knowing patterns will help resolve your dog’s challenges.
• The importance of celebrating progress.
• Why to differentiate between dog training and emotional states.
• When to get an evaluation from a reinforcement based dog trainer.

This was such and reassuring episode. When my Border Collie Juno was around 7 months old she started recourse guarding me, food, toys, locations.... It was really upsetting and I felt very judged especially by people in my own home. Even I was silently labelling her. I wish I had record kept when the problem first started. I did a lot in reading up and 'Dogs That', were instrumental in my approach to resolving it. The muzzle grabbing and aggression was mostly directed at our very gentle and oh so lovely senior and now 15 year old Border collie, Molly. Juno just seem to have it in for her and I'll never know whether Molly was antagonising her all be it unintentionally. That seemed unlikely but the stress was there for all. I stopped bringing shopping in the front door, bag contents were an issue, She was not allowed on the sofas as Molly always slept on the floor. Being careful with the dogs as we return home from a journey. With all four of our dogs I did lots of very controlled hand feeding, usually to the cue of 'Molly's here's! 😂 There were a few setbacks but over a period of months it appeared to be working and the occurances were less. If only I'd kept records. I might have reached where we are today so much more quickly. It was really difficult to keep all the aggression scenarios in my head. Juno is 2 years 5 months now and has come a long way. I am still cautious though as I feel that once the behaviour had been practiced it may always sit with her. Thank you Susan for more pearls of wisdom.

Oh Susan. All the necessary steps you recommend are all the things I truly hate to do! Record keeping is probably my worst trait at work and the resistance I'm feeling to doing that task for this foster dog that I NEVER wanted, is beyond measure! If this record keeping truly is required for me to overcome the behavioral biting and aggression with this dog, I think he's going to go to a shelter first. I just don't have the will to do it. If I struggle to do record keeping when I'm paid and required to do so, I know I'm just not going to do that to train this foster dog. :(

I love your podcast and am amazed everyday about how much more I dont know. Like the proverb (or was it Aristotle), "the more you learn, the more you realize what have to learn". You inspire me to keep trying with all my rescue dogs. I am curious if you can do a focused podcast on demand barking or demand behaviors in general and ways to eliminate rehearsal without using alot of timeouts.

I'd loooove you to talk about how to progress with the relaxed hotzone! i mean, we are having some problems on how to teach our dogs to realx when they are in the hotzone. They have amazing hotzone but they are always in a "working state of mind", they dont realxa. How can you progress it to "be relaxe, so I can cut your nails, or massage your body..". I'd love to hear more about it

Thanks to the team’s advice, I am now working with an animal vet behaviourist for my chihuahua’s anxiety issues. It has definitely been a learning experience! I am part of a rescue group and I got a message from one of the organizers asking if I had a muzzle. Apparently in one of the newer foster homes they had some vocalizing from the new foster dog. They hadn't yet put the family dog in the same room with the Foster dog but were concerned about what they were hearing. They sent me a video and it was obvious that the dog had some Siberian vocalizing going on and it just wanted to play. Happy ending 😄

I LOVE your podcasts!!! I watch them on KZfaq and learn so much with each one. I have a wonderful, 4 month old Australian Shepherd pup. He is SO smart and has learned so much good and fun stuff (besides doing well with sit, stay, down, place, wait, letting me brush his teeth, fool with his paws and ears, etc, he loves getting on the skateboard, he rings wind chimes on cue, and he reliably rings a doggie doorbell when he needs to go out to potty). My interest in a podcast topic: the challenge of his innate herding behavior. Our pup will have episodes where he suddenly gets aroused (not every time but it’s not uncommon: during outside walks - at his age, we do 15-20 minutes twice a day-on our property; and in the house, when my husband walks through the room or sometimes when I’m taking him out to potty. It occurs off or on leash). He’s not aggressive. He’ll hit our legs with his nose, or may nip, or when real excited will grab our clothes (pants or shirt). Sometimes his behavior just shows it’s time for a nap, but other times he just does it. If I have a stuffed toy in my hand, I give it to him to grab before he has a chance to herd. He also plays with moving toys (eg “Giggle ball”) that he can use for a herding outlet. I understand that he is teething, which aggravates his inclination to grab stuff. I would like some pointers on how to guide him so that his behavior is more appropriate for living with people. When we go to visit our grandchildren (ages 4 and 6) this summer, I don’t want to worry about his grabbing their clothes or little legs. And I would also like to preserve our legs and clothes.

This couldn't come at a better time. We are working on counter conditioning and desensitization kibble resource guarding. Just kibble, occasionally an object she fixes on, but primarily kibble. Since October, our now 9 month old puppy rushes and barks at us (has snapped) if we move/shift around her when her food is out. A switch just flips in her brain. When she finishes eating, her mood is completely normal. I have read Jean's book and we are consulting a trainer and working through it, but it can be discouraging and scary. Thanks for the record keeping- I have been keeping records of incidents- but good to recognize and remember to celebrate good choices too.

This was another great podcast by the one and only Susan Garrett. I just celebrated my first month with my new pup. She’s now 7 months old today and I am working on her stays and recalls. She is deaf and that’s a topic I am hoping to see you cover . Until that time, I’ll be catching you on the topics you’ve got planned . I have a multi dog house and there is a 14 yr old BC who has been showing signs of being unhappy or stressed when the two youngest dogs are playing. He gets really upset that they are ruining his sleep or whatever. I’m not a dog so I can’t really know, but I’m good at guessing. I know it may seem odd to feed that dog when he shows any behaviour that are emotionally charged but it’s starting to settle him down. I have not been journaling these episodes but I am doing it first thing tomorrow. Thanks for a great podcast.

What worked for my Sheltie was calling him over and cheerfully telling him what a good boy he was for saving us all from some terrible monster outside and handing him high value treats. He finally relaxed when he realized that I appreciated him for telling us that a "wolf was near the sheep!" If you have to, gate the other dogs away from you, so there are no resource guarding issues while you're training this.

Please talk about barking in your live. I have a pug that is reactively barking ALOT. Her triggers are noises outside, dogs, and knocking on the door. She does seem to be in a fearful, anxious state. When there is a noise or dog barking and she does NOT bark I have been giving her high value treats. When she barks I have been ignoring it.
