I lived in South Africa and talked to many Boerboel breeders and the general consensus was that that a male should be around 26-27 inches and 140-150 lbs. These super sized dogs are a bad habit Americans tend to start.

I’ve owned 2 Boerboel, both male. Both right about 28 at the withers, and one was 161 lbs the other was 172 lbs. both trained for home protection and personal. Both could run for hours keeping up with my female Shepherd. The smaller one could clear a 5 ft fence pretty easy, Both could jump in and out of the truck no prob importantly they both knew when we needed them to turn it on and off. Great family protection.

They probably look at their dogs at home protection and for home protection you don't need a dog jumping fences. You just want a dog as a deterrent and to attack an intruder with the ability to call off the bite for liability purposes. With that said, I still don't want a 200lb dog. I wouldn't even want a Kangal that big

Although I'm not all that familiar with this breed I agree with Zeke that such a massive dog is limited in its working ability. Plus, greater bulk typically brings more health issues and reduced lifespan. I'd want any dog of mine to have a long, healthy life.

My 12 month old presa canario is about 27" at the withers and weighs in at 135lb. He still has a puppy face and puppy behavior. I don't care what his final weight will be, because he's a great dog and that's all I care about.

I too have owned 2 Boerboels. I'm from North Carolina, now living in South Africa. Here in South Africa we don't overfeed our dogs. 200lbs is to heavy, 170lbs is the most you want them to be. To heavy you're asking for heart, and joint problems.

My bandog is at 120. Unless it’s a 110 degree day he’s going to out stamina me. He’s not a working dog but I do need him to keep up if we go on a hike. Thinking about his long term health I don’t want him bulky. Less weight on his joints, less strain on his heart.

I have a 6-year old male South African Boerboel. Weighs about 165-170 and is at about 27-28 inches in height. That’s a great size for this breed. He is a great protector, loving, highly intelligent and I wouldn’t trade him for the world! I do think 200 lbs is too much weight for a Boerboel. Zeke, you vacillated between a Rottie and the Boerboel. Wish you had chosen the Boerboel so I could have followed your journey. Not a well know breed. Rotties are everywhere. Boerboel is the only breed for me.

For care and maintenance, the ability to pick up a dog is very handy! My elderly English mastiff was almost too much for me to move when her health started failing. People need to plan for what they'll do if their senior dog has mobility issues.

I have a 2 year old male that I maintain between 150-160 and he’s agile as a cat at that weight. It’s very hard to find decoys for him to train with these days

My Boerboel is lean and ripped @ 175 lbs... He eats a raw bone-in diet and I fast him once a week... He's been up to185, but 175 seems to be the best weight for him... 140 would be cruel.

I'm new to the Boerboel community. I watched this same video. I'm super impressed about them and the dogs. With that being said, I did say to myself those dogs are a bit heavy for a working class dogs. I've owned mastiff before, and that weight hurts them in the long term

Weight is also dependent on the height of the dog, however the Boerboel breed standard says the following: Females should weigh between 55kg (120pounds) and 73kg (161pounds). Males should be between 60kg (132pounds) and 79kg (174pounds). This is based on ideal weight at minimum height for both dogs and maximum height of both dogs. In a cm to kg 1:1 -1:1.2 ratio. (1cm = 1.00kg -1cm = 1.2kg) That’s the breed standard as SABBS set it.

The Boerboel is a very muscular and powerful dog breed , obviously a 200 pound dog won’t be as agile as a 160 pound Boerboel. The lighter 160 pound will have greater endurance than the 200 pound Boerboel. As a house pet and guard no burglar will take a chance against a Boerboel though.

For some reason more is more in America. Bigger is definitely not better. I'm curious about their health in regards to longevity etc.

I really liked the comparison to a truck . I will have to use that . My male Rottweiler is 11 months 25.5 inches tall and weighs 87.6 lbs . He will be a homestead and farm dog . Herding,and guarding the farm. Most importantly though as a tracker and home protection dog for the family.

Especially now when entering a worldwide depression we should be getting the dogs down in size trim and producing one's that really perform for their grub or they wont make it through this...

Spot on with the weight criteria. A little more height would also do this breed a favor. I've seen some Boer Boels proportioned quite different from the modern day tanks.

I use to work in a big box retailer, some dude use to bring in his giant African Boerboel, Apollo. That dog was just massive.

If you don’t plan on working a dog what’s the purpose of letting them be so big? My Dogo is currently at 118lbs his max has been 120lbs. He gets plenty of exercise daily and refuse to let him get bigger. If I owned a Boerbel 140lbs would be the max. Endurance and a long healthy life is more important to me.

The Bigger the dog the better when it comes to Guarding Home or farm property because the Bigger the stronger✅A 200 pound Boerboel would deal with a thief better than a smaller one. I don’t know about this myth that Super big dogs can’t guard property!

In their home country, they are mostly used for size, bark and general look. Mostly showdogs, companion dogs and pet protectors within property. All of them are not naturally protected. I spoke with a owner who confronted a thief in his property, and the Boerboel could just bark and remain behind the owner. We must also remember, most breeds have been watered down, due to variegated factors.

For what the dog was originally used for the weight makes perfect sense This dog breed was designed to defend itself against the most dangerous wildlife in South Africa baboons hyenas leopards and lions but rarely as a single dog usually in group of 3 dogs or more it is more of a close quarters guardian and reacts defensively A single dog could defeat a single lion but it would get injured in the process there is a valid reason for its large size

The average are males are150-200. The females go from 120 to 150. My female was 130 and I only feed her raw. She was super Agile. She didn't look it because of her bulkynes but they are almost cat like in their agility. If I was sitting down she would jump over my head from a standing position! Again you have to own one to realize their strength and agility. Do not let their size fool you.

My 60lb Boxer is very agile and smart especially when it comes to protecting our home. If he hears the slightest noise, he's ready. This dog looks scary but doesn't look like it jump. I'm learning more about dogs because of this channel & I'm noticing how some dogs barks are bigger than their bites. The burglar could probably outrun these dogs 😂. My Boxer is lean and fast!! Another note, we took our dog with the same approach as we took our firearms. It's not about having the biggest, but the most efficient as well as concealment. I don't want you knowing I'm carrying, just like I want you to think my dog isn't a threat. We never got his ears clipped because it'll look scary. Instead we focused on a proper diet and training, he looks harmless but don't try him!

These boerboels are a bit short so 200 pounds is a bit too much but there are some tall boerboels that can be 200 pounds but behaves like pitbulls. I currently own one and this dog can run all day with his current weight of 195 pounds. He is very fast and agile. I also own a pedigree high drive male rottweiler but it's clear to me the boerboel has much endurance and strength. The rottweiler edges a little bit in terms of drive to me too.

I don't think there's ANY reason for a dog that big !! Little 30-40lb APBT will drag around a 200lb man like he's not even there lol. Without perfect training and having a big ass dog like that under COMPLETE voice command, you'd never be able to stop a dog like that if A. You're walking and it decides it wants something or B. It gets angry and redirects on you.. I'm just a little dude!!! A dog like that would make me into a snack lol

checked breed standard - they can hit 200 lbs but that is the max possible that's actually listed on sites that don't just say to measure it by proportion and definitely not encouraged to breed over that size. You start getting into the dangerous territory of bigger=better and start to lose the workability, especially if the dogs attempt jumping if doing bite/guard/chase work. Super sizes can strain joints and start to mess with the ability of the bones to be able to keep up with the muscle mass that just keeps growing faster, especially as big dogs tend to struggle with that as pups and it's recommended to keep intense exercise to a minimum and spay/neuter (if not properly & carefully breeding) at later ages to allow the dog to mature and not harm or even break their bones by impacts while they're growing.

I have a pure bred American akita and another that was mixed with collie. Pure bred is 56kg and the mix is 36kg and the mix can run all day but the pure bred just plodds along doing his own thing after like 5 mins lol

I have a boerboel from barbarian. Prices have increased significantly due to the CDC trade with South Africa. She is 12 months old 128lbs. I will say these dogs are bred more so for mass and as home guardians not so much the working functionally correct standard. Ours is strictly a family pet. I don’t ever want her more than 140lbs. It’s sad seeing this breed weighing up to as much as a English mastiff. These dogs are so much more than mass and bulk. I know there is a list of breeders who are working to have the boerboels have a standard with the AKC as of now they are just recognized as a working breed but have the SABBS and NABBA standards. I do love my girl and wouldn’t trade her anything, but I want better for this breed.

Yes boerboels can grow big, in my town there was a boerboel he was the biggest boerboel I have ever seen up till date, his name was major dead now anyways he was big that dog will be up to 200lbs no doubt, but one thing u have to know is there are different types of boerboels the old English mastiff boerboel which is rear to find now, can weigh up to 200lbs, but I don't see any 200lbs dog in this video seem his lying, if you want to do a documentary on 200lbs boerboel I have a friend who owns one in North Carolina, he is massive. Unfortunately it is does matter to a dogs health if they are bulked up like that breeders dogs. A lot of the Mastiff health issues are directly affected by excess weight, specifically their joints and cardiac health.

Americans have a bad habit if breeding oversized dogs. As a South African who's owned Borboels before I can agree that 150 - 170 lbs is a good weight, 200 is too much. The breed standard here requires the dog to have a lean muscular body clearly things are different in the US.

For me personally, I only need my dog to perform high level work if someone shows up uninvited. That being said I'm for a big dog. I have a Cane Corso now but looking for a boerboel next.

People with 200lb dogs enjoy feeding 200lb dogs. They serve no working purpose at that weight. Mf’s just lazy and unintentional about the way in which they spend their time. Dogo Argentinos are a superior mastiff imo pound for pound they’re unmatched. I hate when I see people talking good about their oversized dogos. If you can’t appreciate a dog as they were intended then find a breed that works better for your needs.

Your right these guys are in good shape for a pet but I've seen boarbels in athletic shape and they are impressive huge but athletic , could run all day with stamina but they were conditioned fit not pet weight

I owned a South African Boerble shipped from S.A. My parents live there. Mine reached 180lbs and died in 4 years. He was aloof and too big to do anything. Anything over 15bs is obese. Trust when I say, his dogs DO NOT live long.

I understand that mind over matter is what counts in controling a dog. If you can't physical dominant your dog, then it's too big.
