Scotty, I would have to beg to differ when it comes to 'Beauty Covers'. Most manufactures design their 'Beauty Covers' to keep moisture/water off of the electrical components that are underneath them. Case in point, the Dodge Hemi. When I get a customer coming in for a 'runs rough' complaint with the dreaded MDS codes and misfires, the 'Beauty Cover' is missing. With further diagnosis, the MDS Solenoids and other components are corroded with water damage. But, I will agree, that the Toyota / Lexus vehicles really don't have this issue unless you're pron to dropping your 10mm socket down in the valley.

@wellnesspathforme6236

My son has a 94 Celica with a standard transmission. It has about 340,000 miles on it. It was leaking oil like beast when he got it, but it stopped when I replaced the baked on PCV valve and the distributor with one from the junk, errrr, repurposing yard. It doesn't leak oil anymore. However, it still has a cm of caked on burnt oil on the bottom of it. He should really get out and clean it up. It also had a bad time rattling at start up and eventually would die when the gas pedal was released while the engine was cold. This made stop signs **super fun**. The coolant temperature connector on the wire side had given out. There are about three or four connectors right around that area, and I replace them all. The old ones were easy to remove with some high leverage cutters that easily cracked off pieces of the old connectors (just be careful not to cut the wires). Also make sure you remember the orientation of the wires into the connector -- it makes the process more efficient. This is great preventative maintenance even if everything is working fine. 300,000 plus miles is an awful lot of heat to endure for a plastic connector.

Scotty told like a true professional! When I was in the Navy I was in the service side at Pep and I hated when people would UPCHARGE because of commission! I sold more because I would educate the customer and let them decide and determine if a suggestion was a priority! I would also include the dealers number incase they needed a second opinion and usually the rapport I would build would sell itself because I would NOT screw the customer!

Quick tip from a 20-year powersports technician that worked on ATVs and SxSs: leave off the drain plug on the differential when you first pump in the new oil. Since a lot of the drain plugs are on the side and not on the bottom of the cases, a lot of old oil can remain in there. So, you use the new oil to displace the old oil. When the oil comes out clean, then pop the drain plug back on and finish filling the case.

Love all the great info you give Scotty. You're spot on with he differential fluid change. On my wife's previous car, an '07 Land Rover LR3, at 80k, I asked the dealer how much to change the fluid on the two diffs and transfer case. They quoted me $850+tax (!!!!). My normal mechanic quoted me $185+tax but suggested I try do it myself (since he knew I did the basic maintenance myself). I used Royal Purple Full Synthetic gear oil of the correct spec and change all three fluids in about an hour. Total cost: About $55 in fluids. And it was so simple. Unbelievable.

Yeah, the back three plugs are a PITA. Was hoping to see his approach on changing those out, but he skipped right passed it - dang. But, he's correct in that Lexus dealer will charge an insane amount to change out the plugs. The good thing is that it's only needed to be done every 100k miles or so.

I just gotta get in on this one. So you jack the car up and go through the bottom side to get the other 3 plugs? I’ve had to do that on an old Fiero. If you have the right tools and go the right way, the job gets to be much easier and faster.

Tire rotation depends on where you live. Up in the mountains with lots of curves and steep grades tire rotation is a must. Every time I get a rotation it's like I just got new tires and the handling is markedly improved.

3:14 best to find the torque spec and tighten down with a torque wrench as over tightening the plug can cause stress on it and possibly a failure down the road
@forester057
@forester057 3 жыл бұрын
Much worse if you don’t tighten it enough and it blows the plug out with the threads. Big money. I’ve done it both ways and seems to be about the same result except if I’d stopped when the torques wrench said it wouldn’t be seated and might’ve blown out. Get it seated and then use the torque wrench is my advice.

Love watching Scotty's videos, always learn a great deal, this particular one caught my attention immediately - I own 2011 Lexus RX 350 (bought used for $12.5k in 2019, first owner in Houston, was $48k new, all bells and whistles) influenced by Scotty's advice about Toyota, runs great, at 110k miles changed ATF, coolant, brake fluid, engine air filter and ...spark plugs..let me tell you, Scotty made it look like its not a big deal, but took me few hours, the 3 in the front are a peace of cake, the 3 in the back not so much - even after removing plastic pieces, windshield wiper and metal plate running across engine bay (following the manual)- still its a nightmare to reach those 3 plugs, got to use a special spark plug tool with a swivel its so cramped in there and can't see what you are doing, but that's the only thing I hate about V6 in RX350 - has 128k miles now and runs great, my best car purchase.

I did the same thing, bought a 2010 RX350 @ Wilde of Sarasota in 2020 with 114,000 miles and paid $12500, it's fully loaded, one owner,never left Florida. I found a good shop that only works on Toyota and Lexus, had all these things done, then 1 yr later got new tires. looks new, ❤ my Lexus. Scotty is why I bought this vehicle ....he's great.

I always enjoy watching his videos, but when he was demonstrating how to replace the spark plugs, he was only doing the front bank. Then he said "and do the other side". Problem is that servicing the rear plugs is not so simple. On cars with transverse engines, getting to the rear plugs often requires removing a lot of items and can take hours.

There is a TPS reset button under the dash above the accelerator pedal that you can press for 3 seconds on a 2010. Changing the 3 plugs and coils on the rear of that v-6 is nothing like the 3 front ones and can involve either removing the intake or wipers and shroud above the fire wall.

It's imperative to rotate your tires! You want to rotate your tires every 5k to 6k miles so that they wear evenly. If they wear evenly, you can purchase 4 new tires to replace them. Most cars with AWD require you to have the same wear on all four tires so that the AWD system works flawlessly. In addition, tire warranties require you to rotate tires!
@realjohnnewburg
@realjohnnewburg 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. I put a lot of miles in my car, and I still rotate my tires every 5k miles. The shop may be wondering why I go too frequently, but at the end of the day, I'm maximizing the life of the tires, especially when I have FWD and it's heavier in the front than the rear, resulting in more stress in the front tires.

@dudeonbike800
@dudeonbike800 3 жыл бұрын
@@floater81floats37 you're the one wasting perfectly good tires. Everyone who knows cars recommends rotation, etc. But if you want to prematurely replace tires, fine. Or you may just be lucky to be driving a very light car that maintains good alignment on good roads The rest of us driving in the real world have to rotate, balance and alignment every 5k. Following your advice would lead to uneven wear, cupping and potential tire failure in addition to added cost. Pay for lifetime rotation, balancing and alignment ONCE and it isn't a "waste of money."
@floater81floats37
@floater81floats37 3 жыл бұрын
@@dudeonbike800 well as you may have guessed, I am pretty cheap. I do all the work on my cars. So if my tires were getting wrecked I would absolutely rotate them, but they arent so I dont. I have an f150 a toyota solara and a vw golf. If you keep your vehicle in good condition, which I do. Than rotating tires is un nescessary. Im not trolling, this is my experience.
@Assasain31
@Assasain31 3 жыл бұрын
@@floater81floats37 Tire condition varies between the driver , road condition, suspension/steering component, and vehicle's alignment. I have personally seen many vehicles with uneven tire wear and cupping on the outer edge of the tire due to the lack of rotation. You don't have to rotate your tires, but you're definitely going to have a shorter lifespan with them as oppose to Joe who always rotates every other oil change.
