You aren’t joking about gm having weird ground on gm cars. My 97 Buick lesabre died one day as the gauges starting flashing off and on, needles moving, and the relays under the dash clicking at a million miles an hour, super fast clicking. All because of a small hidden ground circuit that took months to trace. But when it got wet it always acted up. My mechanic had to rethink his life after this car lol

Thanks Scotty! My dad always said electricity runs in a circle doesn't matter how many x it twists over or how many times it connects to the next outlet: you will always have to check every connection that it passes through. Doesn't matter WHICH way electrons flow, unless you mix up * and - on one of the wires!. As Scotty AND your brain tells you , when you have a bad ground or a resistance in the wire or a burnt relay, current flow either stops or is insufficient (resistance) to do the job. and if you You got no flow, The car no go. ;-)

I have an 06 Mustang GT that was causing intermittent slip issues in the transmission during the summer of 2017. No codes or no flashing OD and disconnecting the battery would resolve the issue for a while. This summer past my car overheated one day and again no codes and I could not figure it out. The cooling fan worked fine in the driveway but after driving the car the fan would stop working. I replaced the thermostat, the radiator cap, tested the radiator (good) and replaced the fan assembly. Still issues. I checked the BEC (engine fuse box) by removing it and discovered a short in the wiring to the high speed fan relay. It had burned the wiring harness connector and the same connector was tied to fuses controlling the transmission. Replaced the BEC with a salvage one and re-pinned the burnt wiring harness connector using a salvage one and VOILA, cooling issue and transmission issue both solved. Something was not right in that BEC for a while. Even my stereo system sounded louder and clearer afterwards. I had people tell me that I had a head gasket issue (despite no symptoms), a bad PCM, internal transmission damage and it was none of that. It was a simple electrical gremlin that was hard to pinpoint without codes but caused a massive headache with troubleshooting, research and repair!! Electrical issues are the worst. And to think we have planes with all kinds of electronics too, scary!

New Wave Auto Diagnostics nobody could figure it out. I was told it could be the head gasket even though I had no symptoms for that and I was also told it could be the PCM. It had no codes and even when it overheated it is supposed to store a code for that and it did not. Nobody knew what the problem was. I even had a Ford technician look at it with his Ford computer and he could not figure it out. The choices I made were logical ones to try to solve the issue. When 4 different mechanics did not know the problem it was not an obvious fix. I am the original owner of the car and it’s a well maintained car in phenomenal shape. Weird stuff happens with cars sometimes that are not always easy to track down. I have never had a car burn into the engine fuse box and my father in his mid 60s who has had many vehicles said he’s never had such an issue either. I think the short was caused by a daytime running light module that a guy wired into the BEC in 2007. I bought the car in the USA and you have to install daytime running lights when importing to Canada. The guy had it wired into the PCM fuse which is on the same section of the BEC as the cooling fan relays. So I think that setup caused the short. I have since removed the DRL module.

Many years ago when I was working at a 2 way radio shop, we got a police car in for an estimate. The interior had caught fire, and was put out with a chemical fire extinguisher. The police officer that was installing equipment on their cars had used a single screw to ground EVERYTHING! He put it between the seats on the transmission hump. He also didn't cut away any carpet. The car functioned until the first HOT pursuit. With the radios transmitting, the light bar on, the siren wailing away, it gave new meaning to HOT pursuit!

Hi Scotty. I am from the middle east. From Lebanon. I have an old Oldsmobile 88 year 1992. I sure have a major electric failure in it. If i leave battery wired it will drain overnight even when car is off. Now i lose the negative wire when im not using it. But when i turn it on the lights inside the cabine are brighter than the sun! And after few minutes the negative pole of the battery is hot as the sun as well..! I KNOW it wld be easy for u to figure it out. But after 300$ of fail repairs with many electricians i still believe it is an easy fix... just have incompetant ppl who worked on it..! One more thing. Now the car is barely running to 3mph and im sure it is not the transmission... i love this old beast.. my oldsmobile! I also own a Pontiac Bonneville.. but thats another story!

Very good video Back in the 60s l was sent to a local garage, there was a brand new 1 ton commercial van with an electrical fault . On inspecting the electrical fault l soon found out that the body ground had not been fitted . When the vechicle was running without any load on the electrical system the charging rate was correct when side and headlights put on went from 14 volts to Just over 18 volts the more things you put on the higher the charging rate and voltage. I fitted a ground cable between battery neg and ground this cured the problem. The 4TR voltage req was grounded through the body, with body ground missing was causing the req not to work in the system.

One thing to keep in mind is that electrical current flows from NEGATIVE to POSITIVE, not the other way around. That's why when you disconnect your battery to work on an electrical problem, you remove the NEGATIVE terminal...it disconnects the source of the negatively charged electrons that comprise the electrical current.

Wrong. there's no difference at which side the bad connection is. If there's a significant amount of current flowing through a bad connection, it will be heating up, period. Hi Scotty. I have a BMW Z3 3.0 litre. Its had all panels removed and replaced with fibreglass to look like a Maserati from the 60's. So the electrics have been "messed" with. Recently I thought I had a bad battery. I recharged it, did a load test and battery proved to be alright. Sometimes it would drain overnight. Did a "leak to earth test" ..no problem. It went on like this working fine for weeks, then sometimes the battery was completely drained. I stopped at the shops one day and coming back, noticed one of the headlights was on. Ignition was not on or the headlight switch... weird as you say. Intermitant faults are such a pain! I guess I will be checking the earths now !

My 1st car when I was a kid was a 1952 used Pontiac. It had many problems but the one we couldn't fix was: If you let the car sit for a couple of days it would drain the battery. The local garage couldn't find the problem. My dad took it to a electronic specialist some place in NYC. After a week he couldn't find the problem and told my dad to get it out of the shop. I sold the car when I went in the army back in 1961. Yes I'm and old man now. Between that car and a new 1972 Jeepster Commander, I don't know which was worse. I'd say the Jeep.

Great article. Feel better. Dirty grounds also cause worse gas mileage. Alternator tries to fight the higher resistance. Hypermilers go nuts with this but it can help in any car to clean them.

I had a fuel relay fail on a 2006 Nissan Sentra but it only failed when the temperature of interior of the car was really hot so it only was a problem if my car sat out in the direct sun in the middle of summer all day. Dealership mechanics couldn't figure it out. My mechanic at the time figured it out and it's never had another issue. At 206k as of today.

I had an 85 Jaguar XJ6. All sorts of mysterious electronic issues. Problem was that Jaguar was often using body grounds and after 30 years they just didn't conduct well. I ran ground wires to the troubled electronics instead of relying on body grounds and the problems disappeared.

I used to have a '67 Skylark automatic with a floor shift. Someone gave it to me because the shift cable kept jamming then breaking. I finally figured out that somebody had taken off the ground strap from the engine to the body. The car was trying to ground through the shift cable and welding it to the cable housing. When it stuck, you'd try to force it and it would break the cable. Five dollar ground strap and a new cable and I had a beautiful Skylark convertible. Bad grounds can do very strange things.

You can use the soda, but you always have to remember to clean up the area properly after you do it because the other ingredients in the soda can cause other damage that you may not immediately see...... And it wouldn't hurt to also coat the connection with something that will prevent future corrosion on the connection

1:10 any soda will work wonders getting rid of the corrosion around battery terminals (due to the acid in the soda). Pour a little soda on them, scrub them down as Scotty says, and (believe it or not) spray the battery terminals with WD40. I did that 3 weeks ago and not a single spec of green corrosion. Also, stick a penny by each terminal. The copper will attract the corrosion.

2001 Chevy Prism " Toyota Corolla" 150000 mi one day driving I flipped on the turn signal and the engine died...Took it in to a local mechanic he replaced the headlight control module. It ran fine for a couple months and the same thing happened. I replaced the module myself and it still wouldn't run. A friend told me to check all the grounds there are about a million of them I found a burned ground block under the dash. it was the ground for the lights and the ECM.. Repaired it an the car ran for another 50k without any problems..

Relay's are just switches. It allows the system to buffer from high amp items. Controlling them directly will just be a problem. Send a small charge, it switches states, and viola, ac fan kicks in, blinkers blink, windshield wipers wipe. Not so much a safety device, but a extension of the computer.

I’m soooo glad you explained why back up lights stay on after people turn their cars off. I’ve literally seen that thousands of times and wondered “hmm...that’s weird. I wonder my my car’s don’t do that”. Now I’m kinda glad thy don’t lmao. It’s always on newer cars too which is weird to me. I thought it was just like some new things manufacturers were doing

When I clean a ground I put it back together with some kind of sealer over it otherwise the water, etc. that got into it in the first place will only show up again somewhere down the line. A screw that pokes through, body or frame, should be sealed on the other side whenever accessible.

Electrical gremlins is right! I have a Saturn Aura that sometimes doesn't want to start. Cranks but won't start. Then the next day it's fine again. It's not the fuel pump. It's not the crank sensor (both of these have been replaced for NO REASON). It's got to be something weird in the electrical system, but I have no clue what. My mechanic swears he's gone through every connection to look for anything and clean off anything. But still, sometimes it just cranks and doesn't start. I'm afraid I'll never solve the mystery. Gremlins!!

Keep 'em coming, Scotty! I don't wrench on my vehicles like I used to, but it will always be interesting to me. When you mentioned the bad grounds on older GM cars, I was thinking of how bad Chrysler was in the 70s for that. When I was a teenager in the middle eighties, we had both a 78 Ramcharger and a 78 C10 pickup. My dad was a dyed-in-the-wool Chevy man. Guess who got to be the one working on it when something happened? Gotta admit- I still kinda miss those old six-bangers. The Dodge had a 318, and even with that, you could still climb up there and sit in the engine area to work.

Slightly off the subject. Years ago I went through the trouble of replacing an oil pump on F-250 with an I-6. Just as I was finishing up, my dad drove up and ask me what I was doing. He ask if I had checked the sending unit first. It turned out to be a $8 sending unit that took two minutes to replace.
