Clean it up at end of fall, add hay bales to haul hunters to recover there venison harvest. You have the grass, sell live animal shares with a hunting lease. Coolers get filled after am hunt and b4 pm hunts. Coolers get filled, venison sausage made is a bonus. Same for pork and chicken. Without Ken, find general contractors to barter hunting leases for the mini house cabins and your retirement house. Use it to learn what areas need to be upgraded, repaired, restored and replaced. Do the restoration but have it ready for spring fertilizing. It will never leave the farm and you get a new paint and rust removal system.

Then a hay swather, crimper, sickel bar mowing and a hay rake. Also a round baler with wrapper. But first the sawmill to clear more pasture, make your own building materials. The work has the pastures and wildlife thriving. Add a sweetcorn food plot. Libby would make bank, hunters very happy and hopefully keep pressure off the hidden garden.

The spreader is a good one. I see that it was pulled by horse so you’re going to pull faster than walking speed. You will need to do a wash out keeping it clean so it can dry better between use. Who ever had it before did a great job and they parked it inside because snow will ruin it over winter ❄️

Absolutely you should restore the manure spreader this winter!! Strip it down completely, replace any wood that needs replacing, scrub down and renovate any wood that can be saved. Clean all the metal parts, protect them from rust because this thing will live out in the weather, and grease it up good. Tighten things where you can or should and put her all back together and let her shine!!

@marktupper5789- I agree. The spreader we have works great. Our working farm is a testimony to my father-in-law and his parents. We are 3rd generation. The farm looks like 1940 revisited with a 1940 panel truck in the dairy barn and all the old equipment in use. The New Holland tractor breaks down more! Only challenge is finding parts for some of the haying equipment. ~ Diane

I agree! Restore necessary things like the tires and maybe the rotted wood boards. Do a fine tooth comb on the mechanics and where you need to oil and such. But it’s so cool that it’s original and it’s still working after all of these years.

I have no idea why I got so excited by seeing that manure spreader, but I think you got an awesome deal. I did a little research and it seems you may have saved thousands, and some history in the process. It works great for something older than our parents. Knowing how you take pride in your work, I can imagine this spreader being restored and useful for another 100 years. Great job!

Since you asked... about the manure spreader - I'd want to make sure it works well for what you intend to use it for. It's design is a bit different... and you need to know if it's going to work for you. So I'd use it NOW... and if it serves the purpose, THEN I'd restore it without going crazy with it... you know? You may even be able to improve on the design a bit once you see how it works... as you are ALWAYS improving on stuff there. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Good morning Al, your new spreader should serve you well for years to come. The big chain that rides across the spreader floor that takes the manure to the beaters is called the apron chain. You should be on the lookout for an apron chain tool, some day you will need it. One correction in your lever description, it is the beaters that have only one speed and the apron chain that has multiple settings. That allows you to have a constant drive speed but vary how thick or thin you want to spread the manure. I have a John Deere spreader that needed new tires. I was able to use used semi truck tires. At that time I had the rims sandblasted and I painted them with implement paint. Save your used motor oil and brush it on the inside of the wood each time you use it. Nice purchase, worth rewooding it.

There is no one “right way” to knead dough! If it works, what you did was one of the right ways! The muck spreader looks great; sure, it needs a little TLC, but that’s not hard to provide. Definitely go for a complete restoration over the winter! She deserves it. Keep the wood but clean it up well, sandblast all the ironwork and paint it black.

I remember riding the tractor with my grandpa, pulling a load of "material" into the hay field. It had to be done just before the rains came to clear the air, because the material was "fresh", the winter accumulation from the cow shed. Greasing up the spreader using a hand-operated hydraulic grease gun was memorable. Fond memories from the 1950s in central Mass. Spring time, early spring, just after snow melt, before frost was out of ground

Al...I vote for a complete rebuild this winter! It is obviously well engineered(even if unique in design) and completely photographing the speader prior to start of work will be invaluable to you as you separate the wood from the metal, and the metal from rubber, get metal parts lightly sandblasted, primed and repainted, and cut/order new hard wood for the worn pieces and treat with modern wood protectant for a rebuild that will last your lifetime, imho! Tell Gena that her potato bread rolls looked delish!, please! Glad the piggies are learnin' their limits without too much squealin'! The last critters raised by any farmers in the family, were durocs raised up and sold to Swift Packing when they had an huge old packing plant in South Georgia, To hear piglets squealing is as natural to my ears as birdsong to others! Great video Lumnahs!

@@damogranheart5521 I am north of St. Cloud about 40 miles. We have been cutting the yard about once a week here. Our yard out back is like what you would see in a state park. Lots of trees, some grass, some moss, alot of ground ivy, and about any other wild green that is native to MN. We do have a bit of a lawn in front with real grass.

I vote to that you replace the damaged wood, paint the metal but keep the original lettering, maybe dry the wood sides and spray on some linseed oil.

I think you got a very good deal! 👍🏻 Never underestimate old farm implements. We had a similar(but not the same), at our community barn and yes, it broke sometimes but it was always easy to repair and the Dad's could do it themselves! That is a definite plus!

Re: Spreader- Use as is for now. Fully restore and paint as a winter project. Gina: May I respectfully suggest using Bagel Holder to cut your Hamburger buns. Serious hand injuries can happen cutting the way you did.

Possibly try placing the bun between two plates and cut through using them as a guide for the blade.

Listen, people have to learn, you only cut yourself once doing this. I know someone who does thousands of these per year, never cuts himself cutting in his hand. Also, who can remember their mum cutting herself while cutting a loaf clasped to her bosom ? it's just a matter of knowing when to stop.

Hi Al, no question about it, refurbish/ restore the spreader so it lasts longer. Fully restore it, sand blast or similar, epoxy paint the steel parts, replace old broken and cracked wood, don’t do half a job. I think it will be great to see. I love those old farm gadgets and working out how they function, quite clever. Your first mod for it is to set up a jockey wheel set up.

Would suggest you contact Pete at Just a Few Acres. He restores and uses older tractors and restored a similar manure spreader last year. Their farm near Ithaca New York has about 30 Dexter beef cattle. Highly recommend him as a homesteader farm source of information and guidance on pasture development, beef marketing, farm life skills, etc. He is on KZfaq. I have been following him for about 3 years. I think you have a lot in common with!

Hello 👋 Al, Gina, and Olivia, I personally think you got a great deal on the manure spreader. I would only replace the boards that are damaged and replace the rest as necessary. I love the older manual equipment, it’s so rare to find any of it that isn’t rotted and rusted away. Great find 👍🙌💪🙏🍀✌️🐷🐖🐽

Hey Al and Gina, I love your videos. Having grown up on a small farm as a child I long for and appreciate your lifestyle especially since I live in Los Angeles today. I say your manure spreader requires all of sandblasting, new wood and paint. It'll look brand new and will last for years and you'll have a beautiful classic on your hands! Thanks, Greg
