I just had a professional (in business since 1981) install all new door systems in my house. (14 oak 6 panel) They did it exactly like you did, never used 1 single screw in the frames, only pin nails (hinges not included). Doors opened and closed so nice, for about a month. then 95% of my entire house full of doors started dragging, and binding when opening and closing them. Had to have them come back and use screws. Pin nails don't have much of a head.. vibrations from door movement and latching will eventually loosen them.

No qualified carpenter would use “pin” nails to install a jamb carrying oak doors. I’ve installed hundreds if not thousands of pre hung, and custom doors. For lighter interior doors you can absolutely use 15 or 16 gauge nails. Or even 18 gauge. When the jamb is shimmed correctly the weight of the door will not pull it out of plumb because it has no space to move. If they used pin nails then they should be building picture frames not doors frames. I’ve never used a screw In 25 years unless it was for a solid exterior door. Even then, it was one extra long timber screw per hinge set in the centre hole.

As the second jamb (or strike jamb) is installed, its critical to ensure the frame is installed parallel - you want the door to close flush with both sides of the jambs.

do you need a brad nailer or can you use a hammer and nail?

Did you create your own door frame/jam or purchase it? What should one look out for when purchasing one?

Are you able to do all your trim, door and baseboards with a brad nailer? Figuring out what nailers I need since I’m coming to this part soon on my basement.

I did. For sure the trim and base. Usually people recommend a 16 gauge nailer for the door jambs but I just used a few more 18 gauge brads to get the job done lol. Seems to be holding up just fine!

I ordered them through a local building supply store (Wisconsin building supply). yup! they came with the hinge cutouts

When installing the frame & just using the pin nails were the shims are located, what would stop the whole frame from moving. Does it not also need to be screwed into the side walls ?

It wouldn’t hurt to use screws as well but to be honest, these doors/frames haven’t moved at all. They all still function as they did on day one

It’s a multi tool. There are some different heads that you can attach to it to do different things. I have a link for it in the video description. It’s quickly becoming a regular tool in my arsenal!
