December 15, 2022, will be a day I will never forget. I took a nice buck and it was after dark before I got him back to the boat. I was hunting after a major weather front and the river was up. If it could go wrong, it did .Lost gun, deer, cameras, and backpack. But it could have been worst.‪@doityourselfhunter9031‬

One thing I have learned after being in the military for the last 33 years is things are good until they are not... and that usually happens fast and without warning. Your video is testament to that. Your situation could have ended much differently, I am so glad it didn't and hopefully someone can learn from it. There are some great lessons to be learned here. Thanks for posting it, takes a lot of guts and humility to do that.

Thanks for sharing. I grew up hunting in the South Delta and around Vicksburg. I put myself in some dangerous situations in the past but as I’ve aged I try to think about safety first now. This video serves as a reminder to me to think ahead and have a plan that others know about as I hunt alone a lot.

Wow glad you are ok. Jeremy back in the spring I was scouting for turkey about 30 minutes from my house on government property. I had walked approximately 2 miles back on some property that has no ATV trails no foot trails now nothing. After I got about 2 miles back I run into a guy that was also scouting for turkeys which really shocked me. we begin walking togetherAnd after about five minutes I noticed I was sweating profusely I did not feel well. This guy walked back to my truck and get me something to drink and came back when he got back to me he noticed I was not doing well he went and got help I have had two heart attacks back in these woods if I would’ve had to been alone I would’ve never made it out of the woods. The Lord bless me that day there is no doubt in my mind!

I've been hunting and running flooded rivers all my life. It takes just a second for it to go wrong. That water just has so much power. We never ever push off until the motor is running and warm. Always wear PFD. Always wear the kill lanyard. Keep a dry bag with dry towels and spare warm clothes in the event someone falls in but the boat isn't swamped. ALWAYS have your phone on your person, and in a zip lock bag if it isn't a waterproof phone. Headlights: 2 is one, and one is none. I run a 10 inch Rigid LED bar but also keep a handheld in the driver's box in case the main light fails while running. Hunt upstream of the ramp, that way if the motor dies you can drift back to the ramp/truck. Keep a cable come along in the boat. Often times a river may drop badly and the boat may get stuck on a log jam when you try to get back the next day. Place a reflector tack high in a tree where you parked the boat in case its dark when you try to get back.

Glad you came out of that ok. You are a blessed man! Could have been a totally different outcome with just one different detail. I'm almost 72 years old and I hunt alone almost exclusively. Like most of us I am a lot more safety conscious than I was when I was younger. We get smarter with age I guess. I have a standing rule that I will not break. I NEVER leave the ground without being hooked onto a safety line and I ALWAYS tell my wife what stand that I am hunting. I was about 14. talk about scary yet one hell of a learning experience, I have never forgotten. word of advice to all, trust me, size of boat no advantage, quite opposite. larger the boat, more the surface area.

Extra tips Strap your gear down so it stays with the boat and always start your motor and let it warm up before moving. Use a GPS fishfinder and chartplotter, and add a card to show you the river channel and creeks. You can use the tracks on the chart so you know where you have been.

When I was 14, two friends and I swamped the boat in the middle of a bayou, no life jackets, had to swim out, had to break ice to get out. Shotgun almost drowned me. I honestly never even thought of letting it go. Went under about 5ft from the bank, but with the shotgun and shells I went to the bottom and was able to push off. After getting out, one friend was 10 ft out drowning. Waded out to my chin and reached out with that shotgun and pulled him in. He would have drowned. Mile walk back, on the wrong side, luckily the third friend was on the truck side. I almost froze to death. Believe me, I know EXACTLY what you went through and how life and death in a situation like that can turn on the smallest thing. I’m glad you are safe to tell the tale brother.

Great video. I’ve flipped twice. One time in a canoe with a girlfriend when I was young. Came up against a tree like you did (out of my control just like your incident) she spun around and put her weight on the outside and we flipped immediately…lost everything in the canoe. The next time was up in Canada on a remote “fly in” lake with my youngest son…leaned on the rail and flipped me out of the boat just like that. Fortunately the boat didn’t flip and he threw a life jacket to me as the wind was blowing the boat away from me. I had taught him how to start the motor and run the boat the day before…good thing! Im 62 now and know that im am not as sure footed as I used to be ….sad but that’s reality. Love your videos. Lets keep goin as long as we can!

Glad you lived to tell the tale. I got a 14' semi-v hung sideways on a tree once. One of my passengers jumped to the up river side and we took on water quick. He jumped back fortunately. After I got both passengers calmed down we all eased to the bow and the boat turned off the tree. The motor started on the second pull after that scary moment. I guess what I'm saying is never underestimate the power a flooded river. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the insightful life lesson that things can go south real quick and that you need to have a contingency plan for any possible mishap. I am 60 and still climb trees to archery hunt for deer. But, my three boys love waterfowl hunting and I am a nervous wreck when they are out on the river in these freezing temps pursuing ducks and geese. Less margin for error on the water, especially in the winter (in MD). To think about the old climbers we were using 40 years ago with no safety features and no cell phones. Whew! First, glad your ok! Really like your content. I know it took a lot to put this out there. Hard for prideful men to admit things. I'm 63 been hunting and fishing by my self since I was 10. Haven't hunted out of Alabama very much. But have hunted and fished from 150 miles offshore to the mountains of north alabama. And Murphy's law can show up at any time. With all the videos getting people out to hunt, be mobile. This is something that needed to be put out there. Not glad it happened to you. But so thankful to you for putting this out there. I think you have done a great service to the hunting community! God works in mysterious ways! I have shared this with my two grandsons. Because it means so much! Thank you!

Oh man!! So glad that you are okay. These new cell phone apps are awesome for navigating in the woods but a dead battery make them useless. You called that in the scouting video prior to the hunt. If you hadn't been mindful enough to conserve battery by using your compass to navigate then it would have been a terribly long night on that river without help on the way and who knows how the story would have turned. Buddy, Im so glad you had the mind to go and get that life jacket! I wish everyone really understood the dangers and the power of moving water. I went to Co after watching your Wy trip. The dangers for me now is more my age and physical condition. I just turned 50 and my career has turned more into a desk job and im not in the condition I was just a couple of years ago. But man, my heart and gut still thinks im 25 years old. I got up on that mountain the first day and got dehydrated, even with plenty of water. It wouldnt have been a stretch to say I could have gotten in trouble. When I finally got back to my partners, my speech was slurred and i wasnt right in the head. I learned some hard lessons on that trip. I watch all your videos and feel like I know you. Im so glad your safe and appreciate you sharing your adventures.

I am glad you had cell service and are OK. Stuff can be replaced. Thank God for 1st responders! I once had an episode where I was trout fishing the Kickapoo river in the spring in western Wisconsin. The river was high and I thought I was standing in the river only to discover on my next step I was actually standing on the bank. Needless to say I went straight down into the water and my waders were quickly filling with water. I had a friend with me but he was about 100 yards ahead of me and unaware of what happened. By the grace of God I was able to grab a small branch and pull myself out of the water. It took all the strength I had to get out of that river. Whew! I go off grid 4x4 access only to the black river in the San Carlos Indian reservation fishing for small mouth bass a couple times per year. Glad you were not killed. I have a 14.5' Old Towne canoe, and i run some rough sections of river alone fairly often, i was going to share a pic of my setup but comments would not allow it. I built a rack that is strapped with rachet straps to the canoe, it sits on top and hangs off both sides of the canoe. I have velcro straps that very securly hold a pair of coolers, one on each side several inches above the water line with normal loads. I run the canoe backwards so my weight is more in the middle and it balances good, and it does not interfere with paddling. I run class 2 water pretty often and would not be worried about a class 3 with this rig. The coolers keep you from tipping and they act as a pile of extra storage for gear. I would bet with a little figuring you could do that to you boat. Be safe.

That was a real story and a great story . Last year I got turned around in the woods at night that I’ve been in many times before but this one time I just kept getting turned around. I had my GPS phone but I think there was a glitch in it and it wasn’t able to get me out of there, or my mind was so lost that I couldn’t get myself out of there, and about an hour later, I just had to sit myself down and gather my thoughts and come down. I got out a spare GPS unit and fired it up and come myself down and within an hour. I was back at the truck but that one experience made me think different every other time that I go in there, I pay way more attention to landmarks to how long it took me to walk in certain direction I try and gather much more information as I go into a place so that I could get out without having something like that happen again. Again, I’m glad you made it good hunting.

Glad u are OK. Love the videos. I had an incident on a WMA myself when I first started. I did not bring battery pack for my phone. It died on me before I could get out the woods and had to spend the night. I remembered a video I watched when I started hunting about cotton balls soaked in Vaseline. I keep a pill bottle on me now with Vaseline soaked cotton balls and a lighter in a separate pill bottle. I don't use a boat but don't want them to get wet. Started a small fire and had to stay in the woods that night as I did not know the area well and walked 1/2 mile from my truck. Grandfather taught me if u are lost in the woods at night without proper gear do not run or wonder around mindless and just stay at current location and wait until sunrise before u try and retrace your steps. Like u said the woods are another animal at night. Those Cottonballs soaked in Vaseline always light. Glad I had this with me on my only mishap so far

On September 5, 2015 my house was broken into and I was robbed while at work. I had over 20k dollars worth of unisured guns stolen. It was awful. The worst day of my life. Anyway, I remember grandpa telling me, "nobody got hurt." At the time, his reassurance ment little considering what I had just been through. However in hindsight, he was absolutely right. All the other stuff can be replaced. That's perspective. Druggies could have shot me in the middle of the night. That would be even worse. As I've gotten older the ever present presence of God in my life has become even more obvious. Great story thanks for sharing.
