This movie, Devdas, is actually a novel. It depicts the life of Devdas (the main character), a man who falls in love with Parvati, his childhood friend (Aishwarya Rai's character), and is rejected, and finds comfort in alcohol and a courtesan (Madhuri Dixit's character). The novel is basically a statement on how damaging society's judgements can be on an individual. In this scene, the now aristocrat Parvati (Aishwayra Rai) invited the courtesan/prostitute (Madhuri Dixit) to her house on a religious holiday. And they danced. That man was coming down to make a scene about "how dare you invite a whore to your house on a holy day" cause he had a chip on his shoulder. Little does he know that the courtesan will publicly shame him in a few minutes for visiting brothels himself. The story is a very painful but endearing one, which teaches about how damaging judgement, small-mindedness, and conservatisim can be to a society and an individual. The moral is to let others love who they love.

So, the background story to this song is what makes it even better. Aishwarya (the taller one of the 2 actresses) is the childhood sweetheart of Shahrukh Khan, but gets married to someone else. Madhuri is a councubine, who falls madly in love with Shahrukh. Aishwarya is at 1st upset & goes to meet Madhuri, to ask her to stop seeing him. But upon realising Madhuri's true love & devotion for Shahrukh, Aishwarya approves of her. The dancing is part of a festival, & the two celebrating the love of their lives.

That 'sketchy' man in there (Milind Gunaji) is going to cause great trouble to the thinner girl of the two dancers- 'Paro' played by Aishwarya Rai - who is actually the younger landlady in this huge mansion, and is dancing against the societal norm on the occasion of Durga Pooja (an important religious festival in Bengal) with the other girl- 'Chandramukhi', a concubine, played by Madhuri Dikshit ( a Hindi film star actress and exquisite dancer in multiple styles). 'Devdas' is a complex story from 1914 eponymous novel (the tragic protagonist played by Shah Rukh Khan in this film), and has been adapted in no less than half a dozen movies. This song situtaion does not appear in the novel, but has been creatively used by the director Sanjay Leela Bhansali to achieve an intense (melo-)dramatic pre-climax.
