DOLEHAM. Lost in the countryside.

Today I visit Doleham for a short video. Part of MY story, this, for we are introduced to the Westcombes, and their roles at the brickworks. There is still a company nearby making Sussex Handmade Bricks, but when I contacted the current owners I was told that when they bought the company there were no records of any history connected with Doleham. Perhaps competition forced closure of the latter. Maybe we shall never know. Moving closer to a series of videos which are about me and my family and the area. I found them hard to film and it will be even harder to edit and include everything. But as they also form part of "places you didn't know you didn't know" it has to be done. Please bear with me.

Thanks Pete. Mine will never be the best of quality, but they genuinely are made from the heart as much as possible, and what I do will never be voluntarily sacrificed on the altar of commercialism for the sake of earning a few bob.

Seems my family on my mothers side had a lot to do with it in times past. But the coal for Brede connection was a surprise to ME.

Thanks Bob. There are several lovely walks around there, including one that, I think, takes you up tothe River Brede and along the levels to Winchelsea. Virtually no parking at Doleham though, as you could see. And check train times carefully.

Excellent vlog. You look very smart in your uniform Bernie. It is sad to think about how the British railway has been rundown over the last 50 years. I was recently on a train going from Brighton to Portsmouth when an elderly lady asked the guard where the toilet was. He said that there aren’t any. She was immensely distressed. Utterly appalling situation, especially considering the roads across East and West Sussex are now chockablock with vehicles and the air many people breath gets even more polluted 🫢🚂🛤️🤒

Thank you so much Mike. There is a little good news for the lady concerned. The 303 units are virtually gone. The 377 types that they replaced are being returned, and, as far as I know, do have at least ONE toilet. Agree with your comments especially with road polution. I try to go by train to Poole now when I go to Jackie's. A long journey on the coastal route but quite pleasant.

I didn't do Winchelsea station in either my earlier videos on Winchelsea, or in the Rivers of Rye series. But it is on my list of places, which never seems to shrink, so hopefully I shall film this year. Three Oaks was filmed last year and the video will be out soon I hope. It's part of my autobiographical videos, so filming was emotional and it's hard trying to work out how to put it altogether. But I'll get there. Good to hear from you.

Probably a good two miles plus. Yes, Geoff and Vicky (not sure they are still together) did the visit for all the stations. Not that easy to find.
